Between pharmacy and other science based courses like biotech r biochem, which do employers prefer to dabble in research works?

cos from what i know, pharm has more diversed and flexible jobs than a biochem degree holders, pharm can either go to reseach or be a pharmacist selling and dispensing medicines and drugs.but not the vice versa.

Is it true?

Pls,biochem has more flexible job fields or pharmacy??

May you list out the differences of student who take a master in pharmacology over those who are taking bachelor of pharmacy?

from what i know, those who take a speacialisation like master of pharmacology can only manufacture and investigate drugs to the body systems but pharmacist can go into either the former or the latter which is dispensing medicines ,am i right about that?

currently , i am taking biochemistry degree, and that is a pharmacology specialisation for master, and i am really wondering about the only available option of a pharmacology student, what else can they do besides embark in research areas?

I am not sure if anyone or i have asked this question before, but sorry if i repeat the redundant questions here.

What are the requirements of sciences graduetes to continue their master in pharmacy? which institution offer this master PHARM? I am not really fond of involving myself onto research and would be glad to find a way out to continue to pharmacy which can allow me to have a more rewarding career and to have plenty of interactions with patients as well.=)

hi I don't have te definitive answer for this.. But as far as I know, no IPTS in Malaysia offers a master in pharm. Don't know about IPTAs though.

You could try asking monash though. I see postgraduate students doing research in our labs but I don't know what their qualifications are or what they will matriulate with. (Or just give me a week to check out the postgraduate courses here.. I see the prospectuses lying around)

However, I do know that Uni of Sydney and a few others in Australia (UQ maybe) offer 1.5-year master courses in pharmacy with a few specific speialisations you may want to look into(some non research related). I think it's best you email these universities personally and ask them about their requirements.. smile.gif

Links to these universities are up on the 1st post. Just navigate yourself until you get to the postgraduate section. smile.gif

Sick of researching works could land me other tasks is a better option to me.i see pharmacy as a career which could land me a platform for patient interactions and for that i love health sciences more than doing research based works .

hi all, i am more interested to know if there is any alternative way for one to become a pharmacist without taking any BPharm degree.

And always bear in mind that not everyone can get pharmacy in IPTA, it really depends on your luck, even though u have a 4.00 CGPA in hand, u won't necessary stand a higher chance in securing so. thus in this case, could those who fail to secure their luck to get pharm may have any other alternatives ways like exp of getting life sciences degree 1st and then perhaps proceed with Mpharm? hmm...

hope sb would really clear my doubts.=)

pharmacy actually more on theory & lots of memorising..unlike medicine..where practical is also very important...

*
Not only for theory part, indeed u learn more about pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics etc, practical parts are as much vital as the theory parts too.

if pharm is more onto theory parts, i am thinking of a chemist too can be pharmacist. blush.gif

why not? u looking down on chemist? both play totally different roles..chemist are the one producing the drugs that pharmacist discovered/invented/whatever term..
no chemist+chemical enginerr to produce the drugs.... pharmacist also tak payah cari makan...

everybody is inter-related in the health care industry...everybody plays a vital part...

but i do agree pharmacist has a lot of practical too..my mistake here...
*
i am not saying that i am lookin down on whichever profession, and yes i do agree every professions no matter it is chemist, biochemist, biotechnologist, pharmacist, lab technologist, they are always play a pivotal role in colloborating with each other to make the health science fields booming.

From the bold statement there, what u mean here should be inclined towards this perception: a pharmacist have lots of or wider prospects than a chemist since a pharmacist can do what a chemist do, am i right?

I believe most of the healthcare workers do need to undergo a full medical check up before they undergo their housemanships, right? So,I am just wondering if anyone who has red green colour blindness can be a pharmacist?

well, there are generally 3 routes if you work in a pharmaceutical company.

1 is the research line. research new drugs. improve drugs. monitor drug production if they own a factory.

2 is become sales man lo. sell the products of the company to the general public.

3 is you can climb the corporate ladder. be the director or something. etc. its best if you got MBA. or you can become consultant for the company.

generally, the pay will be higher than the hospital settings but the stress levels increase too.
*
Well, any recommended good pharmacetical companies in malaysia? Gonna have my intern there.=)
Another question: how is the prospects of a pharmacist compared to a biochemist if both of them work in a pharaceutical companies?

In order to do Pharmacy degree in the USA, you will first need a general degree.
*
And yes, you need to possess at least a RELATED degree in life sciences like biochemistry or biomedicines etc in order for you to eligible for their BPharm.
One thing which i am not really sure, does the BPharm in US takes 4 years as well?
just to be frank, i never heard of any overseas foreigners studying pharmacy or medicines at US university, unless you are the PR there.they generally don't accept foreign students i guess, correct me if i am wrong.

I got a question here to ask:

do you guys as a pharmacy need to know the technique of chromatography like ion exchange, HPLC and GC etc? to me, a pharmacist not only need to know the drugs names, but also have to get used to the practical skills on how to deal with various biomolecules right?

Well, biomolecule here referring to carbs, protein, lipids , DNA/RNA related stuffs.

an MPharm/BPharm is usually 4 years in length and can be done straight after pre-u in places like the UK,Aussie and Malaysia
A PharmD in the US like their MD is a postgraduate entry degree it is also usually 4 years in length. Which means those who wants to enrol need to first spend 2-4 years earning themselves an associate or Bachelor Degree in stuff like the sciences, mathematics etc. before they can qualify themselves in Pharmacy school.
*
It is just like the requirement to enter medical school. you need to complete and hold a degree in any basics sciences eg, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicines etc in order to qualified yourself to enter the school of Pharmacy or medicines.
