QUOTE Broadband gets new competitor in Sabah mart Kota Kinabalu: The people here and in nearby Penampang now have an alternative to high-speed wireless broadband connection, with the introduction of the REDtone Broadband. REDtone Broadband services are particularly targeted at the corporate sector, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small office/home office (SoHos) and include REDtone WiMAX which was launched here last August by REDtone International Berhad. REDtone has the 2.3GHz spectrum licence from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to offer WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) service in Sabah and Sarawak. Its Group Chief Executive, Zainal Amanshah, told a media briefing, Thursday, that the company is leveraging on its strength in wireless connectivity to roll out the REDtone Broadband in East Malaysia using a myriad of technologies. "We have different technologies from WiMAX to fibre, ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line), satellite and 3G to make data connectivity happen anywhere. We don't depend on any one particular technology to achieve this. "Instead, if we believe that we can do a good job using a combination of various technologies, we will do so. And in instances where one technology works best, we will deploy that technology. At the end of the day, what's important is to ensure that customers enjoy wireless connection at the speed they require and with better consistency." Zainal pointed out that companies are always seeking out alternatives as they look for better speed, more reliable system performance, fast deployment and greater savings, especially during these challenging times when companies want to be more productive and efficient but spend less to achieve those objectives. "Take for instance our REDtone WiMAX where customers can expect to pay up to 40 per cent less compared to traditional leased lines," he said. The five REDtone WiMAX packages that are designed to meet customers' different needs are Basi, BizLite 1Mb, BizLite 2Mb, BizPro 1Mb and BizPro 2Mb. Except for the Basic package which comes bundled with one VoIP line, the rest have two VoIP lines each. Currently the coverage areas of REDtone WiMAX include the entire city central area, the Open University, Penampang New Township, Lintas Plaza and Lintas Square, Plaza Grand Millennium, Likas Square, Iramanis and Kolombong Industrial areas, among others. Zainal said REDtone is currently also studying the possibility of expanding its services to the other major districts in the State. It has set aside RM20million for the expansion and hoped to get the full cooperation of the State Government in making this a reality. He said they plan to increase their base stations to 10, from presently four that is at Pos Malaysia, Radiant Court, Bukit Tiga and Donggongon, in the next six months. He said among their commitments is to provide 25 per cent coverage in Sabah as required by the Government, to enable more people in Sabah to benefit from the WiMAX services through smart partnerships with local partners and the State Government. On other developments, REDtone hopes to participate in the Universal Service Provision (USP) projects for the rural areas in Sabah as part of the effort to provide an opportunity to rural folk to enjoy Internet services. MCMC had identified some areas to set up a Community Broadband Centre (CBC) which is a project funded the government in Sabah and Sarawak. But REDtone's idea is to have a self-sustaining CBC where it can operate by its own without continuously depending on the government. The Government provides the initial funding for the CBC to start and then it can be operational on a self-sustaining basis, through the involvement of the community members. REDtone is involved in USP projects in four districts - Perak Tengah, Pasir Mas, Pasir Putih and Setui, besides in the Kepala Batas Community which provides wireless Internet access via 20 hotspots to the community in Kepala Batas in Seberang Prai as well as the SchoolNet which provides wireless Internet access to a total of 750 schools in all states in the peninsula, expect Perlis. REDtone International Berhad is a Malaysian company which was incorporated in 2002. Founding company REDtone Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (previously known as VMS Technology Sdn Bhd) was first established in February 1996. SOURCE |
