Strictly FYI Fellow Sabahans (RE: the usage of the term: PILAK)
DISCLAIMER: THE INFORMATION BELOW IS SOLELY FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES.
A few years ago (2004?), a friend told me an interesting story that took place in the GSC cinema in KK. The movie that was showing was LOTR part 2 or 3 I can't really remember.
Anyway, you'll know the one because at the end of the movie there's a shot of green alpine-type mountain, blue sky and of course an eagle soaring. Anyway, my friend was sitting in the upper gallery (deluxe) and when the scene unravelled, loud voices could be heard from the downstairs gallery exclaiming in highly pronounced accent: "Wui na! Winston!" proceeded then by loud laughter and the usual howling, whistling and what have you.
Apparently, the scene from the movie was so similar to a cigarette advertisement on TV.
Well, my friend's friend got annoyed and yelled at the group below: "OI KUMPIT! DIAM!"
Well you can imagine how the group reacted after being dealt a crushing blow to their self-esteem. Verbal threats and gestures more for show than anything. In short, very infantile behaviour.
The reader may be wondering "kumpit? what's KUMPIT?"
Fellow Sabahans, allow me the pleasure of introducing to you (those who don't already know) the term which has now begun to fast replace the well known term "pilak" -- KUMPIT.
A little short background info. Among the illegal non-resident suluks, the term "pilak" is a monetary unit like "ringgit" or "kupang". In other words, their currency unit. So, "sang pilak" would mean "1 pilak".
The tagging of the term "pilak" as a label to refer to the people group in question may have arisen from the familiar sight of bus conductors' peculiar method of folding the RM notes lengthways and wedged in-between fingers whilst swinging and shouting from the bus entrance: "AAH...MARI MARI TUARAN TEBOBON MENGGATAL INANAM LIKAS! AAH BANYAK KOSONG BANYAK KOSONG!" KK-ites know this scene too well.
It appears that over the years, those in question have not taken kindly to the label "pilak" and since it's not exactly a good idea to get on the "bad" side of the people being referred to (ever heard of "dendam sampai tujuh keturunan"?) as they are a most vengeful, violent and aggressive sort.
So, why the term "kumpit"? If any of you have ever visited the Sabah State Museum and looked at the area displaying the traditional homes, you will notice that there is an exhibit labelled "PERAHU KUMPIT". The "perahu kumpit" is in all forms and functions exactly the same as the sampans used by the pilaks to enter Sabah waters illegally.
So there you have it. KUMPIT is now the current term being used widely among the youth (mainly KDM community) here in Sabah. The term has gained currencey due to: (1) the sound of the word (notice that the words "pilak" and "kumpit" produce a very hard plosive sound), (2) the term alludes to place of origin (came in illegally on sampans), and (3) the pilaks are still relatively unaware that this new term exists.
As language is dynamic, even this new label has already evolved. You may notice that in most cases, "kumpit" is used. However, there are others who prefer to say "kumplit" (kum-plit). This may be because it gives the word an onomatopoeic quality.
Thanks for your time, do pass on.
