5 reasons why it is not worth it to purchase the iPhone 3G.

2 Megapixel camera: Even a common phone has 3 to 5 megapixel camera.

Hidden cost: Paying additional to Maxis for nothing

No physical keyboard built-in

No stereo Bluetooth, still no MMS, still no video recording

Lack of 7.2Mbps download support

Windows Mobile sucks big time. I've used it , HTC Touch or whatever. It hasn't impressed me. I am still waitng for Palm TouchFlo , now that may impress me. Honestly, I am not going to get another WM Device as it sucks big time. I am using one and it may be the last WM device that I am going to ever own !

Its back to PalmOS for me or Apple

I prefer to have the power of *nix in my pocket

As for the price , I think its better to get an unlocked model from the sellers here

Look at the price of their 6 months contract thingy. You're actually paying the same price as someone who is selling here. Maxis isn't subsiding , pretty much you're paying for the phone alone and maxis gets an additional RM 100. Either way , they make money - you lose

spend the amount of money dictacted by maxis ? no. not worth it. cheaper to buy outside black market somewhere. that one i agree with you 101% to go buy elsewhere unlocked and just go with it. While I have had no problems whatsoever with my black-market-edition 2g since launch until now, i've had friends with horror stories to tell about theirs tongue.gif

is it worth it to blow your savings on such a phone?

well you're right in the sense - if you're just using phone to call/sms.. and that's it, any phone will do really. as long as it don't die on you hehe.

if you're like the type that likes to get connected..? this phone is just amazing. web browsing is the best deal ever. reading rss feeds with newsgator. facebook app is a must for any addicts. games? tons and plenty to keep you amused.. tap tap is really DAMN good and it's free! taking pictures and uploading to your blog? easy as pie.  IMing with beejive/palringo and what have you, incredible. Email support? best i've ever seen in any phone yet. the things it takes you to do these things.. to get it done, it amazing, it's fast. it's just like those devices back in the days of Palm 3 and Palm V.. click and it happens. It's not like WM .. click and you see the 4-colour-wheel-o-wait... oh wait i need to close more apps in the task manager.

So yeah.. it really does depend on what you do with your phone.

(but then again with previous generations of phone, doing these things is a PITA... seriously. with this phone it's a joy!)

This is why I still love PalmOS. Apple carries on that legacy. It just works. With Windows Mobile you can just forget it , trust me. Its nothing fancy. All it does it crashes every now and then. As for the web browser, you don't even have a decent web browser for it - Mobile Internet Explorer just sucks and there aren't any good ones

Oh not to mention iPhone runs on *nix , there is always something fresh that people can port from the *nix world to the iPhone world. These are the advantages. If you're just going to call and SMS , I would say a Nokia 3310 is sufficient enough. I carry my bulky HTC P3600 and my iPod Touch. I prefer to use the iPod touch to surf the internet and to chat rather then using my P3600 - even smsing with it is pretty hard !

Huh , you mean that the iPhone 3G is imported from Singapore by Maxis and its not official as per from Apple ?

I don't think its possible. I don't think so apple would allow it. If its possible , then Celcom would have brought it first then (because of their close relationship with vodaphone)

So my question is

Is Maxis getting the sets directly from Apple USA or are they importing "unsold" stocks from Singtel ?

Are they using this as a test platform to determine how much they can make money and to show apple that "ey look you can make some bucks from malaysians"

Maxis will go all out to promote iPhone and try to get people to buy the iPhone. People do get carried away with iPhone and such. Oh yeah , plus I've pre-registered , lets just wait and see

If Maxis is selling unsold stocks from Singapore , then I would personally e-mail to Apple to clarify about this. I wonder if Maxis is that desperate to get it.

Nevertheless lets wait for this 20th to know

that will be good and pls share the information with us too. smile.gif

Sure

I'll ask my contacts in Maxis anyway. I doubt they tell me much , for instance they didn't even bother to tell me about the launch earlier.

As somebody earlier said , we just need to find the part number to determine from where its the iPhone. Suppose if its from Malaysia itself , it would have its own part number

How hard is it for you to search below. Even a Google search yields you such result(s)

Oh where was I , back to your question

YES , it does support other carriers . The phone itself is unlocked , it can take SIM card from any other provider. But it makes no sense , unless you opt for 6 months package and then cancel the service. But then you'll be paying a lot for the iPhone *unless you dont mind paying the premium*

my area here dont have Maxis 3G, will the iphone work if i change and use it using my Celcom 3G simcard?
*
I don't know which part of the word "Its not locked" that you don't understand !

The phone itself is unlocked , meaning that it takes any SIM Card. If you use a Celcom sim card it would work as well. You are not locked down to Maxis !

so do celcom have the iphone setting ? i cant find any iphone setting for digi instead  icon_question.gif

Not sure how the setting parts. I have not explored iPhone fully. I am moving from iPod Touch. There are few things that I still don't understand (despite being a MacOS X user and a Linux user)

For instance , it still shows numbers instead of the person who is calling , etc (but there is a fix).

As for Maxis , it fetches the settings automagically from iTunes (it downloaded the new carrier settings tongue.gif)

check this when you receive your iphone:-

- can you forward emails/sms ?
- can you receive MMS ?
*
What has that got to do with the question that the thread starter asked ?

I got it from Maxis@KLCC (HQ)

izit a PROBLEM,if i activated the phone my self?

Give me some comment plz thx thumbup.gif
*
No

Its very simple to activate

Put in your Sim Card and connect the Phone and it will activate it. Usually Maxis would do it for you but its up to you if you want to DIY. I did it myself , plug in the sim card , wait , then connect to iTunes. Just answer a few questions , create an iTunes account or just use one !

Voila its activated

We're talking a product from Apple here. They just made it to work automagically , plug , play , go through the guided mission steps and that's about it

i think that is really expensive for the plan..but as i know many ppl buy singtel iphone..but can use 3G in malaysia??thx
*
I honestly think its worth it. iPhone is more of an Internet device rather then a mobile phone. Data package from Maxis (500MB is a lot for checking e-amils , watching couple of youtube movies and such). Oh yeah singtel sets would work fine here anyway

Why would anyone want to sign up for th iValue plan if he/she does not want the iPhone? It is the iPhone which is the attraction.

It would be wishful thinking but if Maxis sells the iPhones without the iV plans, it would be a dream.
*
They do , its that 6 months thingy. I am not sure if thats the contract period or not or if you're allowed to say good-bye

If you think iValue plans are worth it , get the phone directly from Maxis. Oh yeah I've called up Maxis , iValue plans are strictly for Maxis iPhone. Even if you have bought a Singtel set and you would like to register for their iValue plans its a no

any difference if i buy maxis set or singtel set?
pls advise
whats the diff. between these sets and unlocked set?

i think maxis and singtel set can update the latest firmware at applewebsite but unlocked set cant..true?
*
Correct

Maxis set - You get their overpriced plan (but the data thingy is pretty good) , and you get 1 to 1 exchange for your phone

Singtel sets - Cumbersome as in you have to find the seller , exchange - wait for him to go to Singapore . Exchange and then come back !

Overall , think bout it Maxis iPhone set would be worth the $$$
