If you are running Flash Apps, Games or Heavy programs, the Alu macbook hits 80c, its normal. I have a MBA and Macbook Alu 2.4 at home, all are experiencing heat issues. Laptop cooler doesn't help much. since the entire alu body acts as an heatsink, best used under Air Conditioned environment, it will help abit.

And yes, the top left part can be used to warm up my coffee.

If you really think removing battery is good when connecting AC power, then why did Apple engineers spend so much time scratching their head on designing the new 17inch MBP non-removable battery?

So when your battery is spoiled, or you want to upgrade the ram, u have to pay service charge at apple service centres after warranty expires? apple spare/upgrade parts are kinda overpriced. that's the only reason i can think of. Sorry.

the terminalogy to fit in a bigger battery by removing the latches isn't that hard to figure out when apple first launched the PowerBook 17".
