*
yes. just go to admin page => file sharing =>Win/Mac OS=> Enable CIFS Recycle Bin

Enable CIFS Recycle Bin

Checking this option will enable "Recycle Bin" of CIFS, resulting in moving the deleted files into the CIFS Recycle Bin when users delete files in the shared folders via the CIFS protocol. When users delete files in a shared folder, a folder called "#recycle" will be created automatically under the root directory of the shared folder.

Thx ! I will definately go around your shop soon :]

Waiting for paycheck ^-^;
Ps: By any chance does your shop also sell hard drives ? I am looking for the new Seagate 2 tb drive, or the Western Digital 2 tb drive. Cause if i get the 2 bay drive, i will need to cram in 2 x 2tb drives to backup my 5 x 1tb raid5 setup which has a 20% storage penalty.
Your recommendation is a good one, thanks for the advise. I also just found out the difference from the QNAP forum.

Added on July 6, 2009, 6:11 pmHi, i want to ask, why is the 4bay NAS as expensive as the 5bay ?
TS-439 Pro, 4 bays 1ntel 1.6GHz,1GB DDRII @ RM 3,399.00

TS-509 Pro Turbo NAS @ RM 3,999.00
*
basically, TS-439PRO using Intel Atom processor 1.6Ghz vs TS509PRO using Intel celeron 1.6Ghz.

2) TS439PRO have 2 eSATA port vs TS509PRO only have 1 eSATA port ( this is useful when u transfer > 100GB data in/out )

yes, it should come with 1CD, if you don,t find in the box, please collect it from our showroom or download from http://www.synology.com/support/download.p...ng=enu&m=DS109j

basically, u just need:

1) Synology Assistant (Windows) or Synology Assistant (Mac) or Synology Assistant (Linux) => To setup Disk Station

2) Download Redirector (Windows) or Download Redirector (Mac) => To manage download tasks from user clients

3) Data Replicator 3 => To back up PC files to Disk Station

please remember to download the latest DSM2.2 which have more feature and function... + this is FREE.

for now, they had add in the rapidshare (premiere account only), for megaupload, we had ask them to add in, it may take time..

wait for reply from synology.. to make them do it faster, may we advice you to post it at

Hi, i checked with the Synology web site and notice that there was no DS209J but instead DS210J. Is both the product similar? If not can you let me know the difference. Does the 2.5inch bracket included or sold separately?

DS210j is faster /better performance than DS209j

the 2.5" bracket is sold separately @ RM 45 per bracket.

*
yes , you are right. DS209j will be replace by DS210j.

DS209j still have limited stock ...

DS210j is selling now RM 999.00 ,

DS210j vs DS209j
800Mhz vs 266Mhz
128MB vs 64MB

our internal usage NAS had been replace from DS209j to DS210j, so far we are very happy with the performace for this model as we mainly use for backup and keep all our driver.

we take about less than 20 min to finish the migration from DS209j to DS210j.

1) backup system configuration setting
2) move the 2 HDD (we use 2 x 1TB HDD,RAID-1) from DS209j to DS210j ( we need to make sure don't miss out the HDD position, if not the data will be gone)
3) power up the DS210j and install the DS210j firmware,
4) after finish the firmware installation, it will reboot.
5) log in to the admin page and change some info like: admin password, IP address, DDNS, SMTP,port (if any)
6) all the other user ID,password, access right ,folder , data still remain the same

I think this had been help us to save our time ( not need to transfer data from DS209j to DS210j ~ 800GB data... which may take 8~12 hours)

BTW, we had setup 2 NAS for your to test:

1) DS209+II : http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ( user: admin, pass :admin)
2) DS210j : http://midis.serveftp.net:5003 ( this is for our internal usage, sorry cannot access, but just to show u can remote access multiple NAS in single internet IP)

Synology nas support Apple time machine, just go to admin page ->file sharing =>WIn/Mac OS => Apple Talk => to select a particular folder.

(help menu in this section =synology Time machine)

Time Machine

To backup data from Time Machine to Disk Station, select a shared folder from the drop-down menu.

Note: Shared folders that are being used for other services will not be available for Time Machine.

BTW, synology nas support MAC , win and Linux as well

If u Want to Share with others ,let said 15 person, than u can use Ds110j or Ds 210j with up to 2 x 2TB HDD ( 1.5TB have better price / GB)

Thanks for the feedback.

Any idea interms of the speed when transfering files wirelessly. Time capsule vs NAS (Synology / QNAP).

Can i use a 1-bay for back up & storage for both PC & Mac?
*
basically, wireless N will be a good idea. but g also can. Wireless N will have higher speed than G. the faster speed the lesser time u need for this funcion.

1 bay for backup and storage for both PC & MAC.... no problem as long as you must have enough storage space for your PC and MAC.

PC: u can use the synology DATA replicator 3 or if you are using windows 7 than u also can use it's build in backup software.

Hi, bro,

DS109j had been replace by DS110j ( better CPU: 800Mhz, better RAM : 128MB), price still same :RM 599.00

it support Up to 30 Websites

. With the built-in support of PHP and MySQL, users can develop a dynamic database-driven website by themselves, or install a variety of open-sourced programs on their Synology Disk Station.

If you are an experienced PHP programmer, you can develop interactive programs on Web Station, such as shopping site, blog, or bulletin board or download from : Synology Third-party applications are selected and tested by Synology to help Synology users install a variety of applications on their Disk Station

Up to 30 Websites

With Virtual Host, you can now host multiple websites on a single Synology Disk Station. After enabling the Web Station, you can host up to 30 websites on Web
Station.

TS459PRO is usingIntel® Atom D510 1.66GHz Dual-Core processor and 1GB DDRII RAM, vs 239PRO II using Intel® Atom D410 1.66GHz Single-Core processor and 1GB DDRII RAM,

so there is have difference in term of speed.

BTW, may I know what is your actual usage?

aiseh...meant to type 259 Pro vs 239 Pro... i know the proc different...just asking if you have any real life exp on these two...

actually, as i've mentioned, i wanna upgrade to dual bay...mmm 4-bay not sure lah...but mostly due to the storage needs for my collection...last time when i bought my qnap, only download the SD movie and now mostly in HD1080 and bdrip...even the anime is now in HD format, so the need for bigger storage arises. and then i also have the acryan POHD...playing the HD from my qnap...current setup is ok othen than the storage...but i'm also going to start with multiple HD streaming from my media player, notebooks and my desktop...so, wanna make sure my nas is up to the challenge...
so, again...any promo for any of the two?

Hi denhock,

*
every year synology will release new model. like this year 2010, they had release :

DS1010+ ( replace DS509+)
DS710+ ( new model and better than DS209+II)
DS410 ( replace DS409)

so, if you see DSx10 mean this model is year 2010 product.

next model which will be coming soon estimate by may or June this year:

DS410+ (replace DS409+ )
DS210+ (replace DS209+II)
DS110+ ( replace DS109+)
RS810+ ( replace RS409+)

anyway, for existing Synology NAS user, you can download the latest firmware DSM 2.3 and enjoy new feature ...all is FREE.... ( they will release min 2 major firmware upgrade per year)... which will max up our $$$

yes. new model base on Atom D510 processor like:

TS259PRO
TS459PRO
TS659PRO
TS859PRO
TS-459U-RP/ TS-459U-SP

user posted image

and this year they will (if follow the time table), TS12xx ( for 12 bays) and TS16xx ( for 16 bays) which can have up to 16 x 2TB ( about 30TB in single NAS)...

basically, QANP will release new model from time to time ( like NB) when they have new CPU model release by the CPU vendor ( like intel)

Looking for a NAS but i'm not very sure of the difference between models

Could u explain the difference between
DS410j @ RM 1,599.00 ,RAID 0,1,5,6 (4 x 2TB)
DS410 @ RM 1,999.00 , 1.06GHz w # Floating Point,,64bit@DDR533 ,Memory: 512MB
DS410+ (TBA?)

DS410+ (TBA?)
*
basically the difference is the CPU and RAM

DS410j is using 800mhz, Memory Bus: 16bit@DDR800 and Memory: 128MB

DS410 is using freescale 1.06GHz with Floating Point, Memory Bus: 64bit@DDR533 and Memory: 512MB

DS410+ is using Intel Dual-core 1.67Ghz,with Floating Point, Memory Bus: 64bit@DDR800 and Memory: 1GB

in simple:
DS410+ is faster > DS410 faster > DS410j

and DS410+ and DS410 can link with DS510 to have total up to 9 x 2TB HDD , while DS410j max is 4 x 2TB HDD

user support: DS410+ is 2048 vs DS410 is 2048 vs DS410j is 1024
concurrent connections: DS410+ is 512, DS410 is 256 and DS410j is 128

so, for home use :DS410j will do ( or less than 25 person)
for small office use: DS410 is ok ( or for 25 to 50 person)
for DS410+ can support more than 100 person or for those need high speed like doing drawing/design/photo and others.

Synology can store any digital file. refer to your Q : ISO file, I assume this is video file than sharing of this file : let more than 1 unit media player to pay the same file, it support.

DS210j with 2TB , please check your PM.

4 dept with 5 computer each, this mean u have about 20 user/PC

in Synology, you can :

A) create group like account , sales or others
B) set the access right for each folder

u can try this linkdemo site 1 , user: admin, pass: admin or demo site 2 , user: admin, pass: admin

when user put a file which contain virus, that particular file will still contain virus but will not affect / kill others file like what happen in windows system. ( u still need to install antivirus in your PC)

if all your user just doing MS word / documents than you can get:

1) DS210j (RM 999, without HDD) ( budget model ,suitable for less than 25 users), support up to 2 x 2TB HDD
or
2) DS410j (RM 1699, without HDD) (budget model) support up to 4 x 2TB HDD

if your team using CAD/design firm than you should consider:
1) DS710+ ( high performance , RM 2099 ) support up to 2 x 2TB HDD
or
2) DS410 ( RM 1,999.00) , support up to 4 x 2TB

Recently got the DS110j. Attached to Linksys WRT54G. When in network, stored music works well with iTunes (PC/Mac), Xbox360 and Iphone via DS Audio.

My current problem is Download Station. Enabled eMule. Copied e2dk link. But somehow doesn't start download. Status remain 'Waiting'. Counter checked by running eMule on PC and works fine downloading the same file.

Anyone got any idea?

When power up, the blue lights keeps blinking for awhile..probably rebooting. Unfortunately now i can't connect to the NAS neither via Synology Assistant nor web. What should i do?

without the UPS is a very big issue if the electricity supply is not stable in you area,

normally, synology nas will take longer time than usual to boot up from power failure as it need to check the system/firmware and your HDD.

please wait for another 10 mins , if still cannot boot up, than you can remove the internal HDD and boot up the NAS without HDD. If you can find the NAS this mean NAS is ok (normally NAS don't have problem if power failure).

than u can try to put in back the HDD and try again, if still cannot, this mean your HDD having problem.

if you need to get the data from this original HDD, please PM me, we will teach you how.

this will depends on which function / technology ur prefer?

both brand have their own advantage ...

for for the past 4 years, synology had release new firmware ( min 2 times - march and Sept every year) and in fact, today they still release new firmware for year 2007 product like DS207 ( DSx07 series). this mean this will be more value for your $$$.

both Synology and QNAP support SMS system but you need to use like clickatell (http://www.clickatell.com/ ) [ the first and still the largest Online SMS Gateway
covering 819 networks in 221 countries and territories] or others like below image:

please wait for another 10 mins , if still cannot boot up, than you can remove the internal HDD and boot up the NAS without HDD. If you can find the NAS this mean NAS is ok (normally NAS don't have problem if power failure).

than u can try to put in back the HDD and try again, if still cannot, this mean your HDD having problem.

if you need to get the data from this original HDD, please PM me, we will teach you how.

Removed the HDD. Managed to detect the NAS via Synology Assistant. Status 'System is not installed' . Should i install before placing the HDD in?

Hmm... its seems like this is quite a major setback for using NAS. Power trip & failure is common in our country. This may not be the best solution if we need to go through this process again & again every time the incident happen (without using UPS).

Bro hope you can help me decide ..
Synology ds210j or qnap ts210 ?

does the 128 and 256 ram make any big diffrence ?

i mainly wana use them for downloading preferb if able to download
from http servers ( non premium ) eg rapidshare, hotfile Megaupload etc.
and use a media server.

secondly just wana know as do both of them support something like
buffalo and seagate's web server. for easy access over the internet,
as i'm now having a dynamic IP it will keep changing, so i think it will
be easier to access it.
or mayb syno or qnap has a even better solution ?

thanks = )

this is good practices to have UPS or have 2 bays NAS..... (sound like last time everybody using PC without UPS)

synology UPS function support can prevent data from being loss when an unexpected power failure occurs.

Power Recovery

The power recovery function allows the system to boot up automatically after power has been restored, if the system shut down abnormally due to a power failure.

this mean with this APC UPS, it will auto power off when an unexpected power failure occurs and it will also boot up automatically after power has been restored.

Synology BT support rapidshare as well as megaupload.

synology & QNAP provide better web access than brand u mention above.
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Post...3&qpid=33006735

u can use DDNS ( to use with your dynamic IP) and using the synology file station 3 or QNAP web file manager to access your file over internet.

if you have enable the "User Home" (synology only) than user can create a personal home folder for each user, except for guest. All users can access their own home folder via CIFS, AFP, FTP, or File Station.

To enable personal website

The personal website function is a convenient way to allow local users to create their own personal website. Each user will have a unique website address "server-IP/~username" or "server-name/~username", for example:

1. 192.168.1.1/~johnlee
2. SynologyNAS/~johnlee

if you want to try the online web experience:

for synology
site A:: http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,use...password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,use...password: admin

site B: http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user n...password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user n...password: admin

for qnap
site A:: http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,use...password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,use...password: admin

site B: http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user n...password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user n...password: admin

both using streamyx 1MB package.

u should try the Synology file station 3:
user posted image

Synology File Station 3 is a simple web-based file management interface for users to locally and remotely access and manage files. Requiring only a web browser, you can access data anywhere with no extra installation needed.

File Station 3 can operate under a different network port to prevent users from accessing the management interface for security concerns. For extended security, in addition to HTTP, HTTPS is supported for secure access. It is also customizable to match corporate or organizational requirements.

File Station 3 has an intuitive user interface to minimize the learning curve for all levels of users. The AJAX technology used on File Station 3 allows for more sophisticated features such as drag-and-drop and right-click action. You can directly copy, move, compress, delete or rename files and directories stored in the shared folders of the Synology DiskStation. Moving files among different shared folders with File Station 3 is particularly efficient, as it does not require data to be routed through your desktop.

enjoy.....

(imaging you drag a folder ( let said 20GB - a folder size) from folder A to folder B, if you use samba ( in PC or MAC: open folder A and folder B) it may take more than hours (base on 10/100 line) , but if you are using File station 3, it take less than 5 mins.

Yes that is very true. But in contrast, if we purchase a smaller PC like 'shuttle' as a server, back up storage or media centre, i think it will work the same minus the inconvenience during power failure. Of course for non-IT person like me, there would be more settings which i'll need to do to the PC compare to the integrated softwares provided by Synology. And i guess another plus point is synology uses less power consumption compare to a shuttle pc.

Yes. I agree, like DS110j , Power Consumption: 19W(Access); 9W(HDD Hibernation), this mean your electricity bill will less than RM50 per year for this NAS running 24 hours x 365 days .

and this is linux os.... so u don't worry about your system file will kill by virus which is happen in Win os.

just bought a ds410j with 4 x 1TB HDD (useable space 2.7Tb after SHR / standard vol with DSM2.3) for home use on 1giga network and using cat5e for connection.

Horror! It took 2days 10hrs to back up 1.22Tb data from my pc. Den, is this normal? my average write speed is 7Kb/s. Can you recommend ways to get a faster speed? Thanks.

it should about to get up to 28MBs/s

it you need to backup your data , we will suggest you to use DATA Replicator 3 ( come in the CD or u can download from synology.com) , it will faster than what u have now,

or
you can use File station 3 ( u need to enable it at admin page -> file sharing - File station 3) , than u can just drag and drop the file from your PC to NAS ( this speed will also faster than you open 2 folder and drag at drop in your windows explorer)

another one you can try is set the jumbo frame in => admin page => system => network => Jumbo Frame: max MTU is 9000 vs normal MTU is 1500

BTW, may I know
1) which gigabit switch u use , model ?
2) how do u connect ?

u also can use the DS assistant to monitor how is the CPU, RAM, Disk, Network usage..

few thing need to be check:

in Download station -> setting
1) enable the BitTorrent protocol encryption:
2) Enable DHT network ( set this ports at your router)
3) BitTorrent Port Range (set this port at your router)

thanks denhock for the gift...kinda myster though.
anyway, just have a go with one of my movie collection - bluray iso about 23Gb (dun ask about the source tongue.gif )...to my surprise, my ACRyan PoHD cannot play this movie smoothly. thinking maybe the iso-thingy. so, ran it on my pc (spec as per siggy)...ran the m2ts file and same result...lagging and stuttering. never had this kind of problem with my QNAP TS-109 - last time played Matrix 37Gb smoothly on my pc and PoHD - kinda weird since this DS410 has twice the cpu speed and 4x the ram. does RAID5 really have that kind of performance penalty? or is there something wrong that i've done. now, really feel i should take the 259Pro instead but it's dual-bay doh.gif
any tips greatly appreciated.
extra info: LAN is on 100Mbps - no problem previously with my TS109; both PC and PoHD on wired LAN.

few things you can try:

1) use Fixed IP for your DS410
2) admin page => storage =>HDD Management =>Enable write cache
3) admin page => File Sharing => Win/Mac OS=> Windows File Service =>Enable Windows file = >Optimize CIFS database operations
4) admin page => Application => Media Server =>Enable DLNA/UPnP media server

if still cannot, than you can try to use NFS instead of SAMBA
5) admin page => File sharing =>NFS Service =>Enable NFS

in your ACRyan POHD should have one section for your to set the SAMBA/NFS/NORMAL

the DS410 have about 110MBs/sec windows download rate, which is not problem to transfer your movie.

BTW, you can use the online Resource Monitor to monitor your network flow, CPU usage , RAM usage, than we can estimate which sector cause this issue.

Added on June 27, 2010, 6:59 pmSynology® Tops 16 of 18 Performance Benchmarks on Tom's Hardware Intel® NAS Benchmark

Taipei, Taiwan—June 15, 2010— Synology® was acknowledged by the influential IT site news and reviews site Tom's Hardware, by winning 16 of their 18 Intel® NAS benchmark tests for Intel-based NAS devices. Known for high-performance, feature-rich network attached storage devices, Synology has set the performance bar for SMB and home NAS utilizing the Intel Atom™ Processor D510 and D410.

"Synology has always made DiskStations to be top performers, both in speed and capability, and the Tom's Hardware tests are a testament to that," said Doug Self, Product Marketing Manager at Synology. "Deep integration between our hardware and DiskStation Manager 2.3 allows Synology DiskStations to produce ideal results for both SMBs and the most demanding home users."

Synology DiskStations DS710+, DS1010+, and upcoming rackmount models boast the high-performing Intel Atom Processor D410 or D510; this coupled with Synology's industry-leading DiskStation Manager 2.3 operating system produces reliably fast speeds. This performance is crucial for DiskStations, which offer a multitude of features, and often run several file sharing, backup, streaming, and other tasks simultaneously.

Unlike other outdated performance testing, the Intel NAS Performance Toolkit used to benchmark at Tom's Hardware includes tests like HD video playback and recording, content creation, backup/restore tests in addition to standard copy tests. This helps the Intel NAS Performance Toolkit accurately measure the true speeds of a NAS device over many common tasks the user is most likely to perform.

Localized in 12 languages, Tomshardware.com is one of the most popular global computer technology websites, providing readers with unbiased reviews, news and information. Since 1996, Tom's Hardware has helped to simplify the purchasing process for its readers by providing high-quality content they can trust.

if u refer to Intel Processor Core 2 Duo processor, than the only model is QNAP TS809PRO using Intel Processor Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz, but this model is 8 bays.

4 bays , now most performance series using intel Atom DC like

QNAP TS-459 Pro Turbo NAS @ RM 3,250.00
-Intel® Atom™ Dual-core Processor
-1GB DDRII RAM

or
synology DS411+ @ RM 2,499.00
# CPU Frequency: 1.67GHz, Dual Core
# Floating Point
# Memory Bus: 64bit@DDR800
# Memory: 1GB

1) u can use eSATA casing to installed your 1TB HDD and connect to eSATA port at the Synology DS410, the speed is about 3G/s (max)
2) like no.1, you can use USB casing , speed will be 480Mb/s ( ~ 60MB/s )
3) using samba.ftp to transfer.

we try before, using NAS to NAS with gigabit LAN, ~100GB to 140GB in 1 hour.

Hi,

I'm new to this NAS but I want to set up a simple NAS at home.

Currently thinking of getting either Synology DS110j or QNAP TS-110(A bit expensive than Synology). What is your opinion Synology or QNAP?

I have tested your demo website yesterday and very impressive; the Synology DSM 2.3 very interesting and full of features. Do you have a QNAP system setup for testing as well? Me, currently very hard to choose from qither Synology(probably go for this as it is cheaper) or QNAP.

One more question, I have bought one Fuji Xerox WorkCentre 3119 multi function laser printer and wish to use the NAS build in print server to host this printer. Do you guys testing before the NAS build in print server can work with this model of laser printer?

Thanks.

u can test the QNAP NAS here:

QNAP demo site: user ID: admin, pass: admin

BTW, Synology will release DSM 3.0 - beta by this month and official release by Sept 2010.

about your printer, we didn't test this model before, I had check the list from qnap and synology, both also didn't test this model.

u may need to test but as what we know if it work than u may only can use the printer function, others function like scan will not be able to use.

for a simple NAS at home, both DS110j as well as TS110 will be able to do the job for you.

Hi,

I have tested QNAP(today) and Synology(yesterday); I like Synology and will go for Synology. Thanks for setting up the QNAP NAS for testing.

What is the price different between DS110j(800Mhz CPU) and DS110+ (1.2Ghz CPU)? How do I place my order if I have decided my choice?
Btw, any promotion for DS110j and DS110+?

Thanks.

yes, RM 999.00

back to back order

please take note that:

Synology VS60 provides a power-saving and easy-to-use solution for monitoring up to 6 IP cameras managed with the Synology Disk Station.

this mean u must have min 1 unit Synology NAS first before you can use this VS60 to monitor your IPCAM.

Bought the DS410j. Setup is quick and easy. I wasn't impressed with the built-in BT client (the main reason I bought this), so I've installed Transmission + Transmission-remote. Now running like a dream thumbup.gif

Hopefully they released the final build of DSM 3.0 soon.

if you need internet access back to your synology NAS, u still need the DDNS as well as the port forwarding.

which Unifi package u get? one of the package come with fixed IP ( this mean u don't need the DDNS service)

if your DIR615 cannot be use as router or don't have this function, than u may need to use back your old router to do the port forwarding jobs.

hi denhock.. im running a SME.. do you think synology NAS can be a solution for me to act as a file server? a real server cost so much with all the nonsense licensing, count by users. it is too expansive for a small company like me

i just need a place to keep files and let ppl access over the net work

yes. it more than just a file server.

for SME, normally we will suggest you to take :

+ series like

1) DS210+
2) DS710+
3) DS411+
4) DS1010+

which is all more than 100MB/s speed

hey just a question

if i get a 4 bay NAS can i create mix volume eg like 100GB mirror volume while the rest is RAID5 volume ?

lets say i put in 4 x 1TB disk.. i have 4TB raw... i cut out a 100GB mirror so that leaves me with 3.8TB and if i raid 5 that i'll loose 1/3 parity for redundancy which is 1.26TB, so i'm left with 2.54TB volume ?

sorry, in QNAP or Synology, you only can select which HDD and what type of RAID u like to create.

for exp:

4 x1TB HDD, you can create:

1) RAID-5 with 4 x 1TB , u get volume size ~3TB
or
2) 2 x RAID-1 with 4 x 1TB, u can get 2 volume each with 1TB volume size.

if you take the HDD and install into PC, you will SAW 3 partition : System /swap / data.

unless u have special reason to do the multi RAID, if not, normally we will suggest to have the max space as well as protection : RAID-5 ( this will allow one HDD to dead but you NAS still working and your DATA still be there)

I'm thinking of buying 1 Network Storage for my accounts department to host my accounting database which has less than 10 users but considering future expansion, which 1 do you recommend?

I'm looking for 2 bays. I don't know which is more user friendly, the Synology or Qnap? Synology seems alot cheaper though. considering following units:

DS210+ @ RM 1,599 ( 1.06GHz,Floating Point, 64bit@DDR533,Memory: 512M)
DS710+ @ RM 1,999.00 - Atom D410 , 1GB RAM ( can exp to 7 bays with DX5)

TS-210 @ RM 999.00 Marvell 6281 800MHz CPU , 256MB RAM
TS-259PRO+ @ RM 2,399.00, Intel® Atom 1.8GHz Dual-Core processor and 1GB DDRII RAM

if budget ok, than take DS710+ / TS-259PRO+

but for future expansion, DS710+ will able to link with DX510 which can support up to 5 x 2TB HDD. and TS-250PRO+ also can joint with another TS-259PRO+ with the iSCSI function.

yes you can.

but if you use 1 HDD 500 GB and 2nd HDD is 2TB, if you are use RAID-1 setup than the total space will be only 500GB with DATA protection

unless you use BASIS, you will see volume 1 ~2TB and Volume 2 ~ 500GB ( this setup is without DATA protection)

hi,
Im looking for a NAS for home use. mainly for backup and streaming mkv via media player. Im also interested in streaming mp3 via my android phone.

1) is a 2-bay NAS sufficient for me? what is the advantage of having a 4-bay?

2) i have limited budget. so either Synology DS211j or QNAP TS-210. Im planning to get 2 X 2TB samsung F4. Is samsung F4 compatible with both models? coz I read somewhere that i need to update the harddisk firmware first. or i shall choose WD green instead?

3) i dont know much about networking stuff, is it difficult to set up a NAS that meets my requirement?

thanks in advance!

budget series:
1) Synology DS410j @ RM 1350 with 1 x 2TB HDD ( offer)
2) Synology DS411j @ RM 1350 ( without HDD)
3) Synology DS410 @ RM 1999 ( without HDD)
4) Synology DS411+ @ RM 2499 ( without HDD)

5) QNAP TS410 @ RM 1,450.00 ( without HDD)
6) QNAP TS459PRO+ @ RM 3199 (without HDD)

all model above can support RAID-5, if you installed 4 x 2TB than u can get ~6TB usable storage. this is with data protection.

Thanks for reply,
But what is the difference with so much model?

For me is home use, for storage and data protection is priority.

I saw some article said RAID 10 is better than RAID 5, can you explain some...

Added on January 14, 2011, 11:00 amI plan to get 4 bays for 4x2TB SATA to be Home use Storage,
1) able to backup all the data, but is that Raid is safe? Raid 10 or Raid 5?
2) able connect to >5 users, 4 notebooks, 1PCs and Media Player for LCD.

Will plan to upgrade existing PC for downloading --> store in NAS --> Notebook users / Network Media Player --> LCD
* Better Speed of transferring and reading.

3) able to safe shut down automatic when power low in UPS.
4) better protection on virus and disk tools to maintain disk.
5) able to connect from oversea to get a file.
6) Ready for further Extension.

Plan to using Windows 7 for new PC and a notebook using windows xp.

Respond:
RAID-5 ( min need 3 disk ) Striping of data with distributed parity , total space ~number of drives - 1, 3 x 2TB will get ~ 4TB space
RAID-10 ( min need 4 disk ) Strip of mirrors , total space ~number of drives / 2, 4 x 2TB will get ~4TB space

for home use, you can select
1) Synology DS410j @ RM 1350 with 1 x 2TB HDD ( offer)
or
2) Synology DS411j @ RM 1350 ( without HDD)

the main difference is speed and the total number of user can support.

DS411+ is fastest
DS410 is 2nd fast
DS411j is litter bit faster than DS410j
DS410j is the slower ( about 30MB/s with Gigabit LAN)

with DSM 3.1, it allow multiple volumes

# Storage Manager

* New and improved Storage Manager offers the flexibility of creating multiple volumes or on single RAID, which can be a pooled space of one or multiple hard drives. Storage Manager allows you to manage your storage in a more flexible and efficient way across all available hard drives.
* Create and expand the volume size at your wish as your application needs change without disruption.

u need to know how to install the open VPN first, we will not provide any support on this, you can get the support from QNAP or synology ( but as this is 3rd party program, they will also not provide 100% support on this case)

so please make sure u know what u want to do first

yes, still have, but only remain open box unit.

for this model, they don;t support to RAID migration. u need to format the first HDD. better u install 2 HDD.

or alternative u can consider to get Synology DS210j @ RM 699 ( 5 months warranty) which support RAID migration.

hi there,

I'm very interested in setting up a NAS network in my home. I only have wireless G at the moment but I do not watch HD movies, will it be a problem?

Interested in the DS110J, but i have a few questions...

1) does the price include a HDD?

2) is the interface exactly the same as the one I tried on your Synology demo site?

3) i tried your demo site on my Mac, and then on my iPad. It seems to me that if I adjust the windows too big, it will be too big on my iPad but if I made it smaller, it works just fine. Is this a UI problem or it's just the way the UI remembers the size of windows once you log on?

Thanks so much bro. Hope to hear from u soon smile.gif

A)Wirelss G is ok.

B) all price quoted is without HDD.

C) YES.

D) so far we still not yet try on ipad.

E) from time to time, synology will release new firmware. so if there is an upgrade on iOS version than synology will follow.

the download speed form internet than the speed will be base on your internet speed as well as the remote site upload speed.

if you refer to local LAN streaming speed , than there is no problem.

but if you like to streaming video over internet from your house than we will suggest you to use the photo station to play as it had been improved for this usage.

just get my synology 110j , but the bt download speed is very slow , max only around 4or 5 kbps , and mostly stuck at 1kbps or 2kbps ... for the same bt download at my computer can go for 20++kbps

i try to setup like what you post at page 5 be4
"in Download station -> setting
1) enable the BitTorrent protocol encryption:
2) Enable DHT network ( set this ports at your router)
3) BitTorrent Port Range (set this port at your router)
"

enable the BitTorrent protocol encryption , done

Enable DHT network , the port is 6879 , so i set on the router 'Single Port Forwarding '--->'External Port' & 'Internal Port' set to 6879 , 'Protocol' choose UDP ... so done

BitTorrent Port Range ,set from router -->'Port Range Forwarding' -->Start at 6781 , end at 6790 (same with what nas set) -->'Protocol' choose both (UDP and TCP) , done

but ... nothing =.=''

Hello denhock,

I need some advise from you for selecting a NAS.

Currently I have Seagate Ext. 2gb and PC in NTFS format.

I need to NAS can be easy setup and less maintain in future (due to not so much knowledge for maintain it...), and can fulfill below:

a) 4 bays 2GB HDDs
b) Recover Solution (Maximum Storage)
c) 24 Hours Operation
d) Manage communicate with UPS for auto shut down when power down
e) Mainly for Entertainment Files Storage (learn to BT also...)

Current in mind have Synology & Qnap,

1) Can recommend which model are better and suitable to me?
2) Is that any promotion currently?
3) I wish to get it maybe next month or aug.
4) And wish to use Amex to buy it. (Which shop can accept Amex?)

Additional Question: is that CFI external case suitable to me? what is the difference?

Thanks for assist...

hi bro,

1) we accept Amex
2) both Synology and QNAP can support APC back ups like CS-650VA ( price should be ~RM 3xx)
3) CFI external case is for you to have external casing which can install up to 4 or 5 HDD and use the build-in hardware RAID to build the volume. u will see single volume like 6TB or 8TB

Synology: * without HDD
DS411j @ RM 1350.00
DS410 @ RM 1999.00 (pls use this if you have more HD/ Blue-ray movie like 20GB to 60GB movie file)

QNAP : without HDD
TS-412 @ RM 1599.00
TS-419P+ @ RM 2099.00

btw may I know b) Recover Solution (Maximum Storage) ... stand for?

Thanks for reply.

Good to hear that your side accept Amex now. Due to last time your staff said only accept Visa/Master.

b) Recover Solution (Maximum Storage) ... stand for?
Mean: if I put in 4pcs of 2GB HDD, total have 8GB capacity. As I know if using RAID 5 will need 1pc of HDD, then total capacity left 6GB. right?
So, I want to ask which recover solution can be suggest by you for maximum my available storage.

Base on your opinion, which NAS is more suitable for me?

RAID-5 with 4 x 2tb, u get ~6tb useable space. normally we will use RAID-5 as to protect your data. if u just want to hv max space, than use RAID-0 ( 8tb usable space but no data protection. alternative is use single disk , this mean u will see 4 volume.

suggested 4 model will good for u.

pls remember u need to pay for the transport + 10% tax ( all license product will have to pay tax)

so u need to pay US$200 + US50 + 10% ~ RM 852.00 ( base on 3.1 rate)

DUHHHH... I mean the listed price is base on retail SUGGESTED price by Synology.
1 cam license USD60
4 cam license pack USD200

Off course you will bring in by official channel using much cheaper price and sell around USD200. Just like your 1 cam RM199 is almost equal to USD60
rclxub.gif

don't argue la, it's common sense that 4 cam Pack will be cheaper than single pack.
You don't have the stock, just admit.

2. Connection (CFI B4043JD4 to Media player) will be via Cat 6 LAN cable. Upstairs & downstairs.
3. Use this as storage
4. Prefer to have 4 X 2TB HD. Max capacity

Hi Denhock

Thanks for lots of good info on Synology products here.

I have a DS209j and ran into a problem when trying to install Squeezebox server for my Squeezebox touch. Apparently DSM2.3 is required and 209j does not support that. Hence I need to upgrade to a new NAS with min 256 RAM. Which Synology product (new release) do you recommend (1-2 bays), and can you assist with migration from my old NAS in your shop? And can you give a price indication for a couple of options? I use it mostly for photos and music, might do some movies in the future.

Thanks in advance!

CFI external case with hardware RAID controller

1) 4 bays: RM 599
2) 5 bays: RM 699

can this external case work with DS210j?

how it looks like?

I'm thinking whether to buy another new 4 bay NAS or external case with 4 bay RAID

Hey guys,

I have questions in regards to Virtualization Support in Synology NAS, perhaps the seller or any experienced chap can assist me.
I'm planning to buy Synology 713+ or DS412.

Right now, i'm using windows 7 laptop with Vmware installed in it, and i'm storing the images or vmware files in External HDD,
ok now i'm trying to improve and trying to make use the Virtualization offered by Synology for using vmware.

So if i use Synology NAS, i can install VMware application directly into Synology NAS? I dont need to use Vmware in my PC anymore??
Is this what they are saying it's supports Virtualization??

Or it's only for storage purpose for the images where i loaded in vmware which uses synology device as it's own HDD?? Example: I loaded MS 2012 SVR in vmware, the 2012 SVR HDD resides in Synology NAS??

I'm really confused with the use of Virtualization and hopefully i'm not confusing you all.  rolleyes.gif
*
No, you can't install the VMware app directly into syology NAS.

you can storing your image at Synology NAS.

Hi,

Any of the Synology can act as a Media Player to play downloaded files on LED TV via HDMI cables?
If yes, do the software supports XBMC as well?

Or do I need to buy a separate media player?

Thanks...

Better Price, Better Performance
ASUSTOR's ADM operating system combined with an Intel processor allows the 2 series to raise read and write performance to the max.

The 2 series also provides a total of 4 USB ports (2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0) allowing you to simultaneously connect up to 4 external USB hard drives to expand your storage capacity.

Furthermore, AS-2TE series comes equipped with an HDMI port and audio jack allowing your NAS to transform into a multimedia player!

cool.. Until now I've only knew about Synology..

For the 2 Bay, I can't go for redundancy unless I do RAID 1 which wasted 1xHDD...
Hmm.. guess I've to do without redundancy...

btw, what's the differences between the 202TE and the 302T. Website states 302T can playback media on LED TV as well but didn't state what player its installed.

Thanks.

2 bays , you can put 2 x 4TB HDD to have 2 difference volume , this mean u total will have 8TB usable storage space.

or you can put one HDD first and later add the 2nd HDD when your first HDD is full.

like you can use Seagate NAS HDD 4TB @ RM 699.00 ( 3 years limited warranty)

for 202TE and 302TE, the main difference is

CPU:
AS-302T use Atom 1.6GHz
vs
AS-202TE use ATom 1.2Ghz

both using XBMC, others spec is the same.

only the AS-6xx series use BOXEE player

IF you also use HDMI , IPCAM than AS-202TE will be good for you.

if u buy a network media player ( this may cost you RM 2xx), IPCAM license - save RM 600 for 3 ipcam license [ if you use Synology/QNAP NAS], so after less this RM2xx and RM600, this mean this NAS only cost you RM 3xx

I would like to seek some advise on choosing whether synology DS214Play or Asustor 202TE. I am currently using ACRyan Mini as media player. I am looking into having a NAS to store my movies as well as a media player directly hooked onto my LEDTV to replace my ACRyan. What would you recommend among the two?
Thanks.

Denhock,

I would like to get a 4 Drive Bay NAS for my company.

Which product would be more suitable for my use (purely for backup/recovery with only admin access of single user).

Daily, I have about 40gb of data to be back-up. I have to keep about 6 years of documents.

Which mean, I would need to hot-swap the HDD each time they are full.

So I would need the one that is as close as friendly possible to normal windows usage (i.e Plug in - Viewable in Windows Explorer - Copy backup daily until HDD full - Plug out - Change new HDD)

I would appreciate it if you can list down as many products as possible so I can do a better research on them.

Thank you!

So I would need the one that is as close as friendly possible to normal windows usage (i.e Plug in - Viewable in Windows Explorer - Copy backup daily until HDD full - Plug out - Change new HDD)

I would appreciate it if you can list down as many products as possible so I can do a better research on them.

Thank you!
*
Bro, due to NAS firmware ( or OS in this case), they didn;t support plug in/out HDD like usually use device like external docking station.

you can use : one NAS + external HDD or external docking station + HDD ( you can use format like : NTFS/FAT/EXT3/4)

suggestion:

Asustor AS-204T @ RM 1,599.00 ( atom DC 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, hot swap)
Synology DS413 @ RM 1,999.00 ( marvel 1.33GHz DC, 1GB RAM, hot swap)

Hi Guys, not sure if this is the right place to ask this:

I can't decide on which one to choose between:

ASUSTOR AS-302T VS Synology DS713+

Can any expert recommend which is better?

Based on my research, Asustor comes with an HDMI port and act as media player too. I guess synology do not have this.

BTW, my usage is for Stream Media (Media Player), scsi and for VMware use. And also to download torrent using this NAS.

The good point i notice among them in regards to media streaming is..synology uses network to stream whereas..asus uses hdmi directly to stream media..which is cutting the work load..
*
both can do the jobs for you. but if you use VMware and need 2 LAN prot than only DS713+ will do.

basically DS713+ should compare with AS-602T ( ATom 2.13GHz, 1GB RAM -can upg to 3GB RAM with kingston ram, 2 gigabit LAN,

Hi Denhock,

Bought the Asustor AS-204TE from you today.
A question - how do I create sub-folder in the NAS?
I can't find an option to create sub-folders within a folder. Hence, I need to dump all the files into a single folders or create many folders.

Update: Ignore the above, I've just found the option.
