hi,
Im looking for a NAS for home use. mainly for backup and streaming mkv via media player. Im also interested in streaming mp3 via my android phone.

1) is a 2-bay NAS sufficient for me? what is the advantage of having a 4-bay?

2) i have limited budget. so either Synology DS211j or QNAP TS-210. Im planning to get 2 X 2TB samsung F4. Is samsung F4 compatible with both models? coz I read somewhere that i need to update the harddisk firmware first. or i shall choose WD green instead?

3) i dont know much about networking stuff, is it difficult to set up a NAS that meets my requirement?

thanks in advance!

budget series:
1) Synology DS410j @ RM 1350 with 1 x 2TB HDD ( offer)
2) Synology DS411j @ RM 1350 ( without HDD)
3) Synology DS410 @ RM 1999 ( without HDD)
4) Synology DS411+ @ RM 2499 ( without HDD)

5) QNAP TS410 @ RM 1,450.00 ( without HDD)
6) QNAP TS459PRO+ @ RM 3199 (without HDD)

all model above can support RAID-5, if you installed 4 x 2TB than u can get ~6TB usable storage. this is with data protection.

Thanks for reply,
But what is the difference with so much model?

For me is home use, for storage and data protection is priority.

I saw some article said RAID 10 is better than RAID 5, can you explain some...

Added on January 14, 2011, 11:00 amI plan to get 4 bays for 4x2TB SATA to be Home use Storage,
1) able to backup all the data, but is that Raid is safe? Raid 10 or Raid 5?
2) able connect to >5 users, 4 notebooks, 1PCs and Media Player for LCD.

Will plan to upgrade existing PC for downloading --> store in NAS --> Notebook users / Network Media Player --> LCD
* Better Speed of transferring and reading.

3) able to safe shut down automatic when power low in UPS.
4) better protection on virus and disk tools to maintain disk.
5) able to connect from oversea to get a file.
6) Ready for further Extension.

Plan to using Windows 7 for new PC and a notebook using windows xp.

Respond:
RAID-5 ( min need 3 disk ) Striping of data with distributed parity , total space ~number of drives - 1, 3 x 2TB will get ~ 4TB space
RAID-10 ( min need 4 disk ) Strip of mirrors , total space ~number of drives / 2, 4 x 2TB will get ~4TB space

for home use, you can select
1) Synology DS410j @ RM 1350 with 1 x 2TB HDD ( offer)
or
2) Synology DS411j @ RM 1350 ( without HDD)

the main difference is speed and the total number of user can support.

DS411+ is fastest
DS410 is 2nd fast
DS411j is litter bit faster than DS410j
DS410j is the slower ( about 30MB/s with Gigabit LAN)

yes. think this is just another PC/NB, if you need to access through wireless than you need to connect to your AP,

I though that you refuse to answer my question... blush.gif

Yesterday I just heard from my friend in Melaka said... QNAP will be better.

I'm from Melaka, but hardly find those NAS info over here.

That's why I wish to understand more from here, and make 1 trip to low yat for 4 bays NAS,
1 unit UPS and 4x2TB SATA.

better can use Credit Card and 0% installment and without any charges...

yes. but if you only have 2 bays than normally you will use RAID-1 for data protection.

with DSM 3.1, it allow multiple volumes

# Storage Manager

* New and improved Storage Manager offers the flexibility of creating multiple volumes or on single RAID, which can be a pooled space of one or multiple hard drives. Storage Manager allows you to manage your storage in a more flexible and efficient way across all available hard drives.
* Create and expand the volume size at your wish as your application needs change without disruption.
