Apple to Allow Background Tasks on iPhone? QUOTE With the release of iPhone Firmware 2.2.1, many were left wondering what had become of the Push notification system that Apple had announced at the Worldwide Developer's Conference back in June.
While Apple had originally set a September 2008 deadline for the service, Apple removed the feature from beta versions in August and has made no other mention of the service. Steve Jobs is reported to have told one customer that the feature was "running a bit late" and that they wanted to get it 100% right the first time.
Apple does not currently allow 3rd party iPhone applications to run as background processes. Instead, apps must shut down completely after use. Push notifications was Apple's solution to allow applications to receive notices while they are not the active application. Certain services, such as Instant Messaging, would benefit greatly from this feature.
By now, it's clear that something is holding up the Push notification service. While we aren't sure what the specific issues are, we've heard that as an alternative Apple is considering allowing apps to run as user selectable background processes. If so, this feature would likely come in the rumored iPhone 3.0 software update but would be limited to only one or two processes on current hardware. The next generation iPhone, however, would likely see less restricted background process support due to its improved hardware.

QUOTE(gocitygo @ Feb 4 2009, 05:17 PM) Sifu-sekalian, I'm using iPhone 2G with FW2.2. Sometimes I noticed the icons wiggling/shaking after a short touch on the icon (less than 1 sec). Quite annoying that have to press the Home button to cancel it. This problem happened intermittently. Anyone having this problem and got any idea how to resolve it? Thanks. bro..the icons wiggle coz maybe u accidentally touch it for more than 2 sec... apple gave u da option 2 move da icons around... if u dun like it happening, dun touch 1 app for more than 2 sec Added on February 4, 2009, 5:36 pmiRumor: Next iPhone scheduled for June release QUOTE Business 24-7 has dropped a hint that Apple may be preparing to unveil their next-gen iPhone to the public in June. In addition to the news, they have also mentioned the iPhone will become available in the United Arab Emirates in February, on the 15th. The website stated "the next version of the device, which is due out in June, will be launched in the UAE at the same time."
This news is not unexpected; both versions of Apple's iPhone have been launched around June and July, and with the growing popularity of the App Store it is expected that Apple needs to upgrade the iPhone's hardware.
There are rumors that the next iPhone will go multi-core and allow video conferencing, but aside from that, nothing is known.
As for the UAE, the only chance that region of the world has had to get an iPhone is via paying a 20% premium. Now that they are officially scheduled, it should show a rise in popularity, and Mark Davis (Programme Director for iPhone at etisalat) stated "On an average a phone is replaced here every nine months, therefore there is tremendous potential for the iPhone. The iPhone will pick up aggressively in this part of the world." This post has been edited by harmeet15: Feb 4 2009, 05:36 PM

Microsoft, Symbian and Others Announce 'App Stores' QUOTE Fortune notes a string of announcements coming out of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where it seems mobile app stores are on everyone's mind. DeWitt summarizes the headlines and notes that "now everyone has an App Store":
- Nokia's Ovi Store. An online app and media portal that comes "pre-integrated" on Nokia's (NOK) new N97 (right), but will be available for download on a slew of existing Nokia phones come May. (link) - Windows Marketplace. Along with a new version of Windows Mobile, Microsoft (MSFT) announced Monday that it will open a new Windows Marketplace offering - you guessed it - 20,000 apps, some of which actually run on mobile devices. - App Store for Symbian. PocketGear, which had previously built its own Palm App Store and an App Store for Windows Mobile, unveiled an App Store for Symbian, the operating system that runs Nokia's smartphones. How it will compete with the Ovi Store remains to be seen. - Android Market. Google (GOOG) opened an application marketplace for the Android platform last October, but so far it has only accepted free apps. Look for an announcement from Google this week about how that's going to change. - BlackBerry Applications Center. Research in Motion (RIMM) invited developers to submit programs to its forthcoming Applications Center in October. We may be hearing more this week about when that will open for business. - Palm Software Store. This one went live in December with 2,000 apps and 1,000 free games available for download to both Palm (PALM) OS devices and Windows Mobile. All of these companies are, of course, trying to emulate some of the breakaway success of the iTunes App Store, which now houses over 20,000 apps and over 500 million downloads.
now every1 wants to follow apple....

Apple potentially holding a hardware event on March 24....... QUOTE Rumors are circulating that Apple will be hosting a hardware-based press event on March the 24th, to update some of its current product lines. These whispers come from World of Apple, who reported multiple sources "close to Apple" who informed them of the event.
This is good news for Apple fans, as MacWorld 2009 left enthusiasts with a sour taste in their mouths, due to a poor list of announcements. Many other devices were expected, like a long overdue Mac mini refresh, as well as new iMacs and an updated Mac Pro. As you may be thinking, all these devices will most likely be announced at the upcoming rumored event.
Other websites are also expecting an event on that date, and even hoped for a preview of Apple's upcoming operating system, Snow Leopard.
QUOTE The big story circulating around the internet this weekend was the possibility of a March 24th Apple Media event. The date was based on a couple of anonymous reports from World of Apple and My Apple Guide. While the date seems plausible, neither site has any particular track record for accurately predicting Apple's future plans.
Still, it adds to the growing number of hints and suggestions that new product releases are imminent. In contrast, however, Japanese site Kodawarisan pinpoints March 3rd (this Tuesday) as the release date for the new iMac.
While it's hard to place much credibility in one report over the other, Apple is long overdue in refreshing a number of their products, including the iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro. It is feasible that Apple could partially stagger these product releases over the next few weeks.
Of the releases, the iMac and Mac mini are expected to be smaller bumps that may not warrant a full media event. The Mac Pro, however, is expected to incorporate a major architectual jump with the adoption of Intel's Nehalem processors. Intel is also conveniently launching Mac Pro suitable Nehalem processors at the end of March. And in a final piece of related news, the latest Mac OS X 10.5.7 developer seeds has been revealed to already "fully" support the Nehalem processors.
