i will definitely snap!
yeah, far but neighbour wanna go so i tumpang hehehe

i am looking for trail map as this would be my first time up
or maybe a very detailed description would be good

IINM, the logging trail itself is 4km without shade.
please expect to climb on a bare rock using only rope. this is the most challenging part. never let go of the rope...

some write up and photo can be found in the klhiking meetup group.

good luck!

Fellow sifus, need your opinion on this.

Is it advisable to climb with all the haze happening at the moment?

Looks interesting.
Though, I am a complete newbie in hiking.
Do you think it's advisable for fresh bloods to join this event? Last thing I want is to drag the group down (and get blacklisted for any other events.. haha)
*
hi. it's not recommended for a newbie to join this hike, else you won't be enjoying. there is no nice view at the peak. better is to do datuk prior to this.

let me explain a little about the terrain. from starting point to gunung gap peak, you have to go through steep and slippery bamboo trail. i think this is the tough part with fallen bamboo leaves and not much tree for you to hold to. same tough effort required while coming down coz it's too slippery. it's better to have a hiking pole with you. from gap to ulu semangkok, the trail is nice with ups and downs. and lastly you have to cross the gap from gap to ulu semangkok.

hiking is a journey itself. you can progress slowly, don't have to rush. the mountain is always there.

+1 on the description of the trail but -1 on the view.

The bamboo session slippery session only happened for the first 10 minutes of the hike. Another 10 still passing through the bamboo before the trail is wide and clear and assume another 25 to reach GAP. You can also add on that there is a fork junction when exiting the bamboo trail and take note not to exit that fork which is located on your left smile.gif.

Did you try camp at Ulu Semangkuk peak to see the view? I guess most did daypack because there is no water source here. Little to know that the trail beyong the Ulu Semangkuk peak (head straight) will eventually lead you to smaller peaks.

Even if day pack, you should still see the hotels located in Fraser's Hill from the peak's entrance - right turn where left being the peak which is mark with a beirut.
*
can't recall that. i guess i didn't explore the right turn from peak entrance. i'm not that hardcore yet to camp there. lol. only can remember descending bamboo trail that part was very suffering. haha...

Share with me your itinerary route. Which is your first entry point? Sembalun or Senaru?

How many days of hike? Will you spend the second night near the lake or crater?

After hike got proceed to the waterfall?

Lots of question you can asked me about mountains especially those I had been before biggrin.gif

From there I could advice you what you need to do.

Regardless which route you used - the final to climb to the summit - JUST BE PREPARE! It will be one of your toughest hike I ensure you.
*
3 Days. Day 1 starting from sembalun, camp by sembalun crater. Day 2 summit hike. lake. camp by senaru crater. Day 3 descend to senaru village.
so is this the easier option?

you memang pro. any other nice mountain you would recommend?

Hi bro, thanks for sharing. May I know if the gloves managed to keep your hand warm during your climb to the summit?

How is the weather? I have recently bought a base layer (top n bottom), and I have a normal jacket with hoodie. I'm not sure if the I have sufficient protection from the cold weather during the climb to the summit.

Appreciate if anyone can provide input on what equips I can get to have sufficient thermal protection. Thanks!
*
my personal experience. i wore a pair of long john, dri-fit tee, fleece jacket and windbreaker/raincoat. total 4 layers. that's enough to keep me warm. however, i was slow hiker i did not have to endure the cold wind to wait for sunrise at the peak. hence, this is subjective tongue.gif for glove, it's better to get the waterproof kind if you think you couldn't endure the cold because the rope is going to be wet.

headlight - just borrow from friend if you are not regular hiker coz u'll use for one time only. energizer headlight cost around RM 40. pls prepare spare battery.

gel/bar - have your breakfast before the summit climb. you can pop in dried fruits like raisin for quick energy refuel. reward yourself with a snicker bar after reaching the peak. during my climb, i brought muesli bar but it was too hard for my teeth to bite. lol. bring isotonic drinks like 100+ and water.

enjoy your climb!

Wow! Thanks a lot for the guideĀ  thumbup.gif Just a little more.. (girls have a lot to askĀ  sweat.gif ) Jackets must be waterproof? wouldn't it be redundant with the raincoat? And is hiking shoes necessary or sport shoes also can? I have one pair of adidas kampung but the rubber back side of the shoes cut my heels the last time i went to Broga so I wont b wearing them..
*
mind to let us know what jacket you have? just wear another layer of windbreaker should be enough. if it rains, wear your poncho. pls prepare a backup for poncho.

sport shoes is definitely a no. u can wear it for the trail to laban rata but not your summit hike. even kampung adidas is better than sport shoes due to the rocky surface. when it goes to hiking, safety first. better to get a proper hiking shoes. outdoor adventure shop in the gardens has sales quite frequently. maybe you can take a look there. if u buy a new shoes, season it in your training a few times before going for actual hike.

any pro knows whether trail running shoes work for the terrain also? could it be cheaper?

A good waterproof jacket (if you use the word jacket usually it's mean for colder climates) with fleece layered..
usually it's more convenient to buy soft shell jacket, I am not aware of Malaysia pricing but in UK it would cost around 80~150 pounds.. it's not durable but it's light

goretex is just one of the very famous fabric that is water proof but breathable(debatable).. Other thing to take note is
1) do you need hood
2) ease of wearing (some with and without zip, both with pro and cons)
3) fitting
4) durability
5) waterproof properties will fade over time
6) how small it folds up into
7) Price $$
8) Brand you support
*
does soft shell jacket have the water resistant and wind breaker feature?

i've always wondered, those 1k above jackets compared to the few hundred ringgit ones, what is the pros & cons that results in such a dramatic price difference? Say compare those by outdoor companies to the ones by Timberland which are much cheaper.
I'll be heading to New Zealand in a few months and I still haven't got a windbreaker yet.
*
mind to tell in which month you are going and which trek you're going to hike?

if you stop by christchurch, there's a Kathmandu outlet shop there. the goods might have minor defect but selling at much cheaper price. i think it's more cheaper to get your gear there than in msia winter wear shop.

@aidono, you are very right. Trekking from Senaru would be a better choice and I believe the view of Mt Rinjani and crater lake is better.

We summit from Sembalun campsite and the guide informed us we must return by 9am else we would have problem reaching the Senaru crater rim campsite. The route to Senaru is tougher than summit trail. Is that true? Gradient steeper? More loose sand?

The visibility was low and due to time constraint, I decided not to continue. Around 1 hr / 300m below the peak. We then went to the hot spring for lunch and back. damn tired. Btw, it's a g good experience.
