Athlon X2 250 to ship over 3GHz

AMD plans three Regor based dual-cores that will feature 2MB total cache and come in AM3. These CPUs should replace Kuma based 65nm part and they will finally get AMD dual-core K10.5 CPUs over 3GHz.

Since Intel already has a 3.33GHz dual-core, AMD has to come close to this frequency, but AMD keeps saying that they compete against Intel dual-cores with three-cores. At this time, we don’t really know the frequency of this CPU, but over 3GHz sounds like a positive step forward.

The CPU will have a 65W TDP, while the Kuma 65nm dual-core that sells as Athlon X2 7750 and 7550 has a massive 95W TDP.




AMD demos six-core Istanbuls

Great Turkish Bombard takes aim at server market

Inqster Charlie D. took a sneak peek at AMD's new six-core behemoth, codenamed Istanbul.

The chipmaker showed off three platforms based on Istanbul six-cores. Two of them featured four sockets, for a total of 24 cores, while the last one featured "just" two sockets and 12 cores. The demos were used to show off different features of the new server parts, but no prices, clocks or availability dates were disclosed.

One of the tests on a four socket test bed was a simple show of force and a core count. The two socket system was used to demonstrate Istanbul's virtualisation prowess, while the last four socket system was used in an interoperability demo. This feature is interesting, as upgrading from Shanghai to Istanbul seems to be a breeze.

Phenom II X4 955' sample surfaces, is overclocked to 4GHz

The Phenom II X4 955 exists, and it's a pretty nice overclocker. At least, that's the impression you might get after reading a thread at the XtremeSystems Forums, in which a member has posted CPU-Z screenshots of the unannounced AMD processor running overclocked in the Windows 7 beta.

As you might remember, we last wrote about this purported Phenom II X4 955 two weeks ago. Back then, word was that the 3.2GHz quad-core CPU would hit stores in April, and that it would be a Socket AM3 part with a 125W thermal envelope and support for DDR3-1333 memory. That chip was also said to be a replacement for a 3.1GHz Phenom II X4 950, which AMD supposedly canceled because of better-than-expected yields.

Dumo from the XtremeSystems Forums shows the 955 engineering sample running at the stock 3.2GHz speed with a 1.25V voltage setting. At 1.45V with air cooling, the poster claims he was able to hit a cool 4GHz by pushing the HyperTransport speed from 200 to 250MHz—and he even has a screenshot to prove it. That screenshot shows Dumo also overclocked his memory to 1666MHz, which netted over 11GB/s of read bandwidth according to a Lavalys Everest benchmark.
