excellent post ian oh, totally forgot about the human aspect, the owners. that idea should be executed by the leaders of the Sarawak association, in other words make owners have access to legal advice.

(and here i was babbling about international conventions of conservation & cruelty against animals)

A bit into politics ! It is time that all Sarawakians voters, especially Batang Ai voters and swiftlets farmers, show the state government your dissatisfaction through your votes in the coming elections !

I was reading the press report by The China Press on Saturday. It was about a dialogue btw Ronnie Liu rep State Government, other govt depts and Selangor Birdnest Merchants Association held in Sabak Bernam.
YB Ronnie brought up 2 worrying points, i.e (1) Relocation of all BHs within town areas or commercial areas within 3 years period, (2) No coffee shops or restaurants can be operated on ground floor if upstairs is BH.
I don't have to discuss on point (1) again, but point (2). Is YB Ronnie under the impression that our swiftlets are like grass swifts which build nests on lima kaki ceilings. Aren't sparrows, crows and pigeons more health hazardous to public? Do they have to be relocated or killed also ?

I have come across a kind of 'food source generator' which in principle throws food into the air inside BH for swiftlets to catch and eat, thereby saving the trouble to go out to hunt for food. Do you think this is a good idea ?

Too bad I don't have a picture. Anyway, i will try my best to describe it in simple way.
The food is in protein-based tiny tablets form (similarly in size to koi fish food ). Hundreds are released on a timer to the air by air pump and collected back via a big funnel below for those not consumed by birds back to the main food box. The principle is just like the water circulation process in fountain.
With this machine, birds don't have to go out anymore to source for food. The ecology is being changed! Is it OK? I can appreciate the pros, but I don't know the cons.

While everyone is hotly debating the 1GP or 1Malaysia, I took the opportunity to visit Sabah to see if there is an opportunity for swiftlet farming. I have also attended a swiftlet farming seminar with a guest speaker from Jabatan Haiwan of Sabah.

Apparently, swiftlet farming in Sabah is not as popular as West Malaysia and Sarawak yet, they are at the infancy stage. However, Sabah has a rich source of natural food for swiftlets and it is just neighbouring to Sarawak and Kalimantan which are swiftlets havens, thus I can see the opportunity there.

When come to the 1GP issue, the speaker from Jab Haiwan mentioned that there could be an approved 1GP but its implementation would still be subjected to the respective local authority (PBT). I was not quite sure what he meant by that. He further informed that the export fee for Sabah is the lowest as they are only charging RM5 per consignment basis while West Malaysia and Sarawak are charging per kg basis.

A friend of mine, a well known LYN member, also took me to visit a few BHs either completed, under construction or proposed. One interesting development proposal from him is that he is proposing to sell a 'lifestyle' concept in a beautiful area. He will be selling an acre land with a standalone BH plus planting with about 400 seedlings of agarwood at about RM580k. 3 years later, the mature trees would be sold back to him at RM500 per tree. I will leave it to the member to interpret the financial return. He had also used his bards call test kit to call the swiftlets. We could see at least 20 swiftlets flying above in less than 5 minutes at around noon time. One may say 20 birds is nothing as compared to the number in other states, but one has to know the no. of BHs in other states and the competition also.

Above are my observation to share with fellow members. Your comments are welcomed.
