according to the hacker...
the 1.5TB, 1TB , 750 GB and 500GB HDD are using the same platter ...the baracuda 7200.11 is the same family...

It is the firmware that locked the capacity...

thus by unlocking the firmware write to the hdd can enable to flash to bigger capacity hdd...

I trust him that is why I flash my firmware..

I did it once and it works..

ooo wow! so we could get free storage? But did you actually tried to store 700gb of information and tested every bit of it? Cause it may just say 700gb but then overwrites the earlier info.

Yup...I done fill it to the max with contents...The max size is around 69X GB..

I have done the diagnostic test too to make sure it is ok...Look at picture..

I rather have more capacity rather than having a bigger 32MB Cache ....8MB cache is enough for me...coz I use the HDD to keep movies & Mp3 mostly..

The ST3500320AS, SD1A does'nt look so good... Look at the yellow dots...a few far out of focus(I circle them in red 2nd picture ok)...this is the root cause of the HDD being lock mechanism....I don't have faith that a firmware update to SD1A will keep the HDD alive as claim by Seagate...

QUOTE(kepco @ Feb 15 2009, 01:10 AM)
if Seagate lock HDD plater capacity through firmware, than it is not a cost effective way to do business:

for 500GB HDD, the most cost effective way is using two 250GB platters (as of time of writing, HDD platter main-stream technology is 500GB per platter, which is put in WD 2TB or Seagate 1.5TB HDD).

I do a quick check for Seagate 500GB drive, at least two web site indicate 500GB is a 2 platter drive, which is using 250GB platter where 750GB HDD is a 4 platter drive:
http://www.pclaptop-review.com/2006/11/16/...d-drive-review/
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-i...a-hdd,2688.html

so, to get 500GB HDD increase to 750GB, it mean seagate is installing at least 3 platter into suppose 2 platter drive, then use firm ware to show as 500GB capacity.

isn't this is a funny way to do business, Seagate just need to announce to the world that they are able to sell 750GB HDD at WD/Hitachi/Samsung 500GB HDD price and beat them to death in term of sale?

There is at least RM127 different between Seagate 750GB and 500GB selling price if I based on PC Depot price list:
http://www.pcdepot.com.my/pricelist.aspx

why seagate have to hide their more superior technology or manufacturing capability compared to competitors?

I duno why...U need to ask Seagate...

I guess is bcoz of platter technology ...Look at attachment k...

What u are reading there is older Seagate family baracuda 7200.10..which max at 750GB

The one I am talking now is baracuda 7200.11 family which max capacity at 1.5TB,

I open a thread here looking for the specific firmware ..not looking for comments...You can keep the comments to yourself....What are you trying to prove here??? tongue.gif

I have done the firmware flash and successfully increase one hdd the capacity to 750GB...

since the firmware no longer works, thus I need to get the specific one..

Thx

the system I use to do the flashing firmware already formated and I very quick install back the OS using ghost master HDD..

The HDD ..as soon as it firmware flash update successful I do a zero fill up and formated to NTFS...

THen I copy/ fill contents to the 750gb HDD ...to the max...around 69X GB...

I am looking for the firmware here...Not looking for crack or hack...Thus can post here...HEhehee

Then I move that HDD to my main rig...Working fine..
