well ur only partially right there....defenders should also be able to read the game very well....ie hyypia...so that they can set up a good offside strategy and also to initiate / assist in the attacking effort....well alot of ppl thought offside is just by chance but its not...its pure ingenuity of the back 4 to anticipate the pass and to make that 1 step up....nowadays even by just dropping a shoulder forward a fraction of a second prior to a killer thru ball would already made the targetted striker offside...that is how precise the games are nowadays...

well if u've watched enough football and u would know how big an influence he is in our midfield...he's our big cover, the 1st rock that attackers have to beat before reaching our defenders....and he would be the one staying back when we take corners....so that the big centre backs can go up to head the ball....like a keystone for an arch....without it everything just falls apart..
