MARADONA MAKES MASCH CLAIM

Diego Maradona today labelled Javier Mascherano the most important player in Argentina.
The football icon installed our number 20 as skipper after taking over as national coach last year - and previously described him as a 'monster' of a player.

And this morning it became clear that Maradona's admiration has not waned as he revealed Mascherano was the first name on his teamsheet ahead of superstars like Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

He told Argentine TV: "I am awake at 4am designing a team. The selection? It's Javier Mascherano and 10 more."
   
   

Liverpool to sign £24m midfielder?

Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

The midfielder joined Spanish champions Real Madrid in 2007 from Dutch club Ajax for £23million however, he is now being linked with a move to Merseyside.

Sneijder impressed in his first season with the club however, he has failed to mirror the performances this term.

Italian giants Juventus are also set to launch a bid for the 24-year old. They believe Sneijder is the perfect replacement for soon-to-be-retiring Pavel Nedved.

Although Benitez is keen on the Dutchman, he may struggle to persuade the Anfield board to stump up the £24million valuation.

Reds midfielder keen on Madrid switch

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is not ruling out a move to Atletico Madrid in the future.

The 21-year old is currently happy at the club but may consider a switch to Altetico one day.

Lucas said: “I have come close to joining Atletico before and I do not discard the possibility of playing for the Rojiblancos.

“But for now, I am happy at Liverpool.”
