Hi, I've scoured the forum but I can't seem to find anything that answers my questions.

My iPhone 3G was bought from America. After initial failures in unlocking it on my own, I took it to a computer store where they did it for me. All was well. I used a Maxis 3G post-paid sim card and I could download Apple Store apps, etc.

Unfortunately, I stupidly (accidentally) updated 2.2 firmware to 2.2.1. My sim card could no longer be identified. Desperate, I activated my phone with a prepaid AT&T sim card I had on me. The latest back up on my iTunes for my phone has the American number registered, along with all the files on my iPhone.

I downloaded Quickpwn 2.2.5 because it's said that it can unlock this new firmware. Everything went smoothly, but like when I first got my phone, I can't make or receive calls (immediate failure) and I would like to do it on my own if possible (since I'm tight on cash right now).

Question 1: How can I enable calls on my iPhone?

Question 2: Can I restore my latest back up after fixing this issue, or will I have to input everything from scratch?

Added on February 5, 2009, 6:22 pmOh, just to add, I can surf the internet and access every other part of my iPhone. The dialer doesn't freeze up on me or anything; I just have No Service and cannot make calls at all.

btw, do u know the difference between unlock n jailbreak?


Unlock/Activate = a method to make the iphone working with any carrier other than AT&T.
Jailbreak = forcing the Iphone to accept installing 3rd party application (through Cydia @ Installer)

For Iphone 3G, the only way to unlock it is through 3rd party application called yellowsn0w that can be downloaded through Cydia after u jailbreak it using PwnageTool (Mac) or QuickPwn (PC).

Unfortunately for ur case, u said u have updated the firmware to 2.2.1. Thats means u cannot longer activate ur iphone with other telco than AT&T bcoz it is locked to AT&T. This yellowsn0w im talking about only support up to 2.2 firmware. So, what u can do right now is pray for the Dev-Team (team that develop this yellowsn0w thing,mostly musclenerd) come up with new version of yellowsn0w that support 2.2.1 firmware. Thing is, every time I searched online for help on unlocking my iPhone, I was constantly redirected to pages teaching me how to use Pwnage Tool or Quickpwn (which is now also available for Mac). To be frank, I didn't know much (if anything) about yellowsn0w. But if the issue is basically the firmware version, I can just downgrade to 2.2 and it should be fine, right?

just a correction, there is also Quickpwn for mac

u did mention that ur i3g were origin from US. then i assume this is not unlocked unit right?
even u downgrade to 2.2 it still wont solve the problem. u have to jailbreak & install the app named "yellowsn0w" from Cydia.

Actually you're in deep s**t. When you upgrade the phone to 2.2.1, the baseband already change. Yellowsn0w only work with 2.2 baseband (02.28.00). You can check the baseband in Settings --> General --> About --> Modem Firmware. If it state 02.30.03 then yellowSnow won't work.

If you want to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1, the correct way was using Pwnagetool and create a custom IPSW (firmware file). In Pwnagetool, there's an option to disable baseband update, means you can upgrade the phone firmware to 2.2.1 but keeping the 2.2 baseband.

Once you have updated your firmware to 2.2.1, your baseband is at 02.30.03. Unfortunately you own a 3G Lock iPhone. You will not be able to unlock it until there's a solution from DevTeam. Enjoy you iPod Touch.

And I forgot one thing, downgrading the firmware from 2.2.1 to 2.2 WILL NOT downgrade the baseband. It's a one way street as in baseband version can only go up and not down. I'm afraid you're stuck with an iPod Touch for the moment.

in an unrelated note, this update has always been fondly as known as the the yellowsn0w "killer", in order to hinder dev team's progress.

im sorry for u my fwen..got unlucky this time...im afraid wat u can do right now is pray for updated yellowsn0w that can be used with 2.2.1 firmware..

There is possibly a way to downgrade to 2.2 from 2.2.1 with the baseband downgraded too.

Many of them got stuck on how to restore the phone in recovery mode. The video will demo & explain how to do it. You have to follow the sequence in the video strictly.

The other way is to get the Gervey SIM unlock card for firmware 2.2. It has been proven to work.

Not true. Many of the guys have actually got the baseband downgraded to 2.28 from 2.3.03.

Stop giving false info/hope to the TS.

I've read the link that you gave over and over again and not a single line said you can downgrade the baseband back to 02.28.00. All they were discussing was downgrading the FIRMWARE and not the BASEBAND. Get the fact straight first before giving hope to people. If it was possible, won't the dev team already given the solution to it?

FIRMWARE and BASEBAND are different. From my understanding, most of them in that site want to JAILBREAK their phone and not to UNLOCK. Thats why they want to downgrade the firmware from 2.2.1 to 2.2 since dev team has not release Pwnagetool or Quickpwn for 2.2.1 at that time.


The bolded sentence shows the reader downgrade the firmware to jailbreak it and not to unlock it. I assume most of them are using AT&T hence there no need for an unlock, they were just concerned about jailbreaking. But our TS is trying to UNLOCK his phone which is not possible with 2.2.1 baseband (02.30.03) at this moment.

The whole article talk about baseband downgrade. Notice that all the guys who did that mentioned iPhone 3G 2.2.1 firmware. This is why the article specifically mentioned that they have managed to downgrade the baseband from 2.3.03 to 2.28.
It is not false hope when many of them have done it.

Notice the word 3G in the article that was first downgrade & jailbreak. ezio-xb initially has a non-working iPhone 3G when he mistakenly upgrade to firmware 2.2.1. The dead iPhonei s now working for him.

illjuan3@yahoo.com... posted a youtube video of the exact sequence of doing the restore & users skp, dm0ney, effwg etc... and many of the posting in the same page showed that they have manged to downgrade & un lock the iPhone 3G.
Even in the posting for te video in Youtube at least 1 of the recent posting thank the person for the intructions to solve the 2.2.1 downgrade probl

SO THIS IS NOT FALSE HOPE. AT LEAST THEY TRIED AND GET IT WORKING.
Just to let you know - I have unlocked, jailbreak and customized 5 iPhone 3G and 8 iPhone 2G over the last 4 months for friends & relatives for free. I am also a registered Apple iPhone Applications developer on iPhone applications as a part-time basis and also work on cracking some of the paid applications on Cydia & Applestore for my own personal use.

Wow..5 3G iPhones and 8 2G iPhones consider alot?? Darn... you're no where near compare to Hanxz mate. Please keep your pride to yourself. Btw, if you post any crack apps or links, i will personally report you to the mods. Just a humble reminder.

Anyway, since you consider yourself a great master in iPhone, please help hanae0711 to downgrade. He may not be ready for such attempt and since you're good at it, lend him a hand.

I think you or those people in the article should join the Dev team since the dev team themselves can't downgrade the baseband (or so they said).

Clearly you don't understand the situation. TS want to unlock his phone since its an US set (locked to AT&T) and yellowsn0w does not work with 02.30.03. From the article (that has been your source), it's said that they manage to downgrade the FIRMWARE ... for goodness sake ... FIRMWARE and not a single hint of BASEBAND uttered in there. FIRMWARE can be downgraded but not BASEBAND. Get that thru you thick skull.

Please show me in any of the article or youtube or whatever that they manage to downgrade the BASEBAND ... again I said BASEBAND. If you keep insisting that it can be done ... I would gladly pay you on behalf of TS to unlock his 02.30.03 BASEBAND for RM100 since you said you do it for free.


P/S - I'm also a developer and cracking Apple apps are easy when crackulous is around. Big deal.

Added on February 6, 2009, 1:46 amTo add some more salt to the wound, I can even restore back the phone down to 1.0.2 but the baseband would still be 02.30.03 (but there's no firmware 1.0.2 for iPhone 3G ). The A17 testpoint is no use to clear the baseband since its using a different architecture from the 1st gen.

2 things u can do

1. get a turbo sim (As everyone here will say, NO)
2. wait for dev team to come up with a yellowsn0w update to work with the new baseband.

and yes what some of the forumers said before, 2.2.1 is a yellowsn0w killer
apple quietly released it.

i guess chrisl_57 didnt even know the existence of yellowsn0w..still using 2.2 turbosim..
or u got problem using yellowsn0w bro?

btw, if TS can even downgrade the firmware, it wouldnt make any different at all since yellowsn0w only unlock up to 2.28..no further than that..

i assume u don't read carefully on those article released by DEV TEAM...... please bear in mind once u upgrade d baseband to 02.30.03 there is no way to downgrade d baseband back to 02.28.00 (at d moment). d whole article is only talking about firmware downgrade n not baseband downgrade...
if u think so easy to downgrade d baseband then y should apple released d baseband upgrade? is it for fun? difinitely to kill yellowsnOw user....

by the way if u want to prove us wrong.....why not u upgrade your lock iphone to 2.2.1 using itune and later downgrade it to 2.2 n show us d baseband
