i just bought a 42 plasma panasonic and i have been doodling with it for 3 days now.
connect it with my pc via vga cable and the display are quite nice, but the default resolution is just 1024x768
through the pc display setting i can see that i can increase the resolution up to 2048x1536
i tried to increase the resolution but it did not work, it goes blank for a while and then back to default

am i doing thing in the wrong way? or do i have the wrong cable?

i need help to maximize my plasma tv.
would love to see hd movie without having to buy a dvd hd player. icon_idea.gif

using nvidia geforce 9500gt

As far as I know, currently maximum resolution for Plasma TV is 1920 x 1080 (which is Full HD). So, how do you expect the Plasma to support 2048 x 1536? If you want that kind of resolution, try to purchase 30 inch LCD for computer monitor, then it should be no problem to increase the resolution to 2048 x 1536. In fact, it can go even higher resolution. But 30 inch computer LCD monitor is quite expensive. icon_idea.gif

sweat.gif i also happen to think the vga cable has its limit as you said, for that reason im planning to buy a dvi to hdmi cable. do you think i should? hmm.gif
i cant be thinking of buying another lcd tv. im bummed out already, dust in my wallet. blush.gif
just want to maximize the gaming experience as they say. without spending too much  cool.gif
btw im using plasma TH-42X10K

TH-42X10K is not Full HD Plasma, in that case, your maximum resolution should be only 1024 x 768... sweat.gif

Buy a dvi to hdmi cable, I think there is no noticable different. sweat.gif That one I have never try before. Let those experienced users comment for this.

noob question.. is it advisable to buy a plasma tv as a desktop monitor replacement?

my friend bought one but it seems that the font are all very small. eventhough this could be altered but other 3rd party applications font couldn't be changed.

also.. what about the image retention/burn in effect? if using windows, etc. how long it takes for the image retention?

I think you better go for 30 inch LCD monitor. sweat.gif It got 2560 x 1600 far better than Full HD LCD/Plasma. thumbup.gif

Another reason is, if there are no pirated CD/DVD around (assuming law enforcement teams do their work) then I think the barrier will be lower for people to adopt blu-ray.

Soon (?) FullHD(1080P) will be replace by 2560 x 1440 (1440P). 1440P is not new and it is around since 2007(?). brows.gif So, what should we call 1440P? Ultra FullHD?

TV may still upgrade to higher than FullHD in coming years but I believe blu-ray will stay for quite some time cause Sony and Others not yet gain enough profit out of the this Blu-ray. Even their got better product to replace Blu-ray their will not do so in few years time. laugh.gif

Or maybe next generation TV will follow computer monitor's standard go straight to 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA) or even higher one 3840 x 2400 (WQUXGA - 9.2 million Pixels)? drool.gif

Sammy plasma has worse image retention compared to Panny Plasma. I don't think anyone said burn in. Burn in not equals to image retention. They are related but not the same...Burn in is permanent, image retention is temporary.

sweat.gif Correct. Should be IR not Burn in. tongue.gif

Dammm.. now i have think twice getting plasma liaoz... *sigh*... was aiming for 50S10 for its price value.

Like quite mafan to avoid image-retention and burn-in... esp. i like to watch movies on it, as its mostly not 16:9 ratio meaning theres 'black bars' topbottom of the screen... and at the same time wanna play PS3 games on it.. then had to worry abt 'static images', like "HUD, Scores, CommandPanel etc".

Wherelse lcd has no such issue rite?...
*
You only use your TV to watch non 16:9 movie? sweat.gif Don't use TV to watch Astro, etc.? If you use it to watch Astro, etc., why do you worry about it? rclxub.gif

Ok, what i gather here.. the cons and pros :-

Plasma pros : no lag/ghosting issues, wide viewing angles, slightly natural colors, most have tempered screen glass for durability.
           cons : burn-in, image-retention, slightly more power-consumption.

LCD pros : slightly less power-consumption, no burn-in, no image-retention.
cons : lag/ghosting issue but hardly noticable(?), too much contrast lead to picture quality doesn't look natural(?), viewing angles not as good plasma(?), no extra protection for the screen.

(Referring to most common lcd/plasma which its not 100Hz and above, or not Kuro and etc.).

Anything i missed there?.. do correct me, if i list wrong there..  blush.gif
What i meant was, normally i watch movies its on "cinema ratio" mah.

I watch abt the same amount of Astro and movies, thats why im worry abt the those burn-in and image-retention, esp. some PS3 gaming.

Cheers smile.gif

I am using my Plasma to watch non 16:9 movie and Astro. After 200 hours, so far so good. laugh.gif

Which country already have 3D ready full hd plasma?

I think Panasonic will only official release worldwide on next year. But in some countries, their already got demo unit and if not mistaken, currently UK got roadshow for these type of TV.

I only know Panasonic got this type of TV and you also need 3D FullHD Blu-ray Player and other accessories like following items:
