QUOTE(cyew86 @ Jan 22 2009, 10:14 PM) how to know whether it's 320th power cycle? some drives bricked in just few days, some users used for 1 whole year also never brick there was alot which came back within 1-3months of usage recently .. maybe not 100% of the failed drive caused by this log rewrite problem but could be high numbers return numbers.. |

QUOTE(Mooshi @ Jan 23 2009, 11:36 AM) Just to remind, the correct procedure to flash: static doesn't need 10seconds to discharge.. I think it's for discharging the capacitors from the PSU..(1) Burn ISO to a disc. (2) Unplug non-related HDD drives from ur system and leave only the target drive and the CD/DVD drive which needs to boot up the CD. (3) Set BIOS to boot from CD/DVD (4) CD boots up, read the text, press F10. (5) Press A,B,C depends on which model. (6) Press any key to shutdown the PC. (7) Now, this step i see most people didn't do. The 'CYCLE POWER' thingy. - switch off ur main power switch. - unplug the PC power. - Press and HOLD the power button for 10 seconds. (8) Plug in ur power supply. (9) Power on main switch. I believe the reason for step (7) is to clear off some static electric still remains in the mobo/hdd or something like that. Better safe than sorry. |

QUOTE(Matrix @ Jan 23 2009, 10:21 PM) I don't think so, there has been like at least 3 revision of the same firmware with the code 'SD1A'. the thing is the latest one posted currently (i.e. this week) is supposedly the right one. all previous ones doesnt work or doesnt fix the problem right?so even if the drive is loaded with SD1A previously (later than last week), need to patch to this weeks SD1A or not? |

if you read the seagate forums (which some damning posts were deleted) and also the seagate insider maxtorman blog, you will know that this problem bypasses SMART.. it;'s embedded in the firmware microcode.. even SMART won't know what hit it when it happens.. better dun take chances.. backup the stuffs.. then continue to use the HDD with updated firmware.. if still dare.. QUOTE(gjoey @ Jan 30 2009, 12:39 AM) Thanks one_guy.... yeah that maxtorman,.. I think on the seagate forums and another site.. got mention that SMART won't "see" the issue.. one day you turn on the drive, poof.. it's not seen by BIOS.. no SMART to save the HDD.. At least I know it's normal for Seagate to have values like that. ar188... Are you referring to this ARTICLE? Yeah...I've read it. But more on blaming their middle Management on pressuring them to release not-fully tested Firmware. Back up my data.... as for backing up tell me about it.. 4-5TB to back up here.. just bought one WD yesterday, getting another 1-2more next weeks or the 1.5TB/ 2TB if can hang long longer until stocks arrive.. then the balance just use 4 seagates (updated firmware) with duplicate data.. good thing that the 1,5TB/2TB WD comes out now.. need one of those as well.. |

QUOTE(xelnamikaze @ Jan 30 2009, 02:44 PM) haha .. the question is will you fall in love with the price ? haha! true.. USD299 (should be retail price) for 2TB ain't exactly cheap.. maybe malaysia will have cheaper "Installer" pricing..Added on January 30, 2009, 7:14 pmtoday I went to buy 1more WD 1TB but, instead went for a new stock (datecode 09XXX) Seagate 1.5TB.. couldn't help it.. went to check online... it says below.. (dunno true or not, new stock end dec/early jan09 also not affected??.. I tot they only fixed the firmware on around 21-22nd JAN?? ) SNo Serial number Result Action 1 9VS0XXXX Drive is not affected. No action required. This post has been edited by ar188: Jan 30 2009, 07:14 PM |

QUOTE(expertester @ Feb 5 2009, 11:19 AM) Should be 250 disc la.... then need to consider fail burn also nowadays very few coasters liao (fail burn)Better buy green WD to backup (low power usage, low temperature). No need 7200 RPM for storage hdd what I just used up my 50pcs Sony DVDR (over 1-2year period) , I think zero failure so far that I can recall.. Green WD, got 3 variant. EACS (2 variant, later one, around nov/dec/jan is better) and EADS latest with 32MB buffer.. but agreed, dem cool, compared to my 7200.11 Heaters.. |
