there are two choices when it comes to lecturing: IPTA or IPTS. each has very different outcome, depending on how u see it.

at the moment, IPTAs will definitely turn u into an academician,

I have a question, I'm currently in the process of applying for my Master's Degree and yes, I would like to become an academician.

However, the Master's Degree I'm applying for is not from my Bachelor's Degree background. E.g. I'm planning to study Literature whereas my Bachelor's Degree is in Advertising Design. Weird. I know but let me explain my situation. When I was studying for my bachelor, there was a writing course that we have to take and I instantly fell in love with writing. Towards the end of my final year I've lost my passion in Design and became more interested with writing, literature, etc. However, the preferred course that I want to take is not offered in Malaysia, and I can't afford to go overseas for a Master's Degree so I opt for the closest course which is English Literature.

Since my background is not from English Literature, I thought it would be best to take a taught course. I wouldn't want to jeapordise my Master's Degree doing research (even in mixed mode) in an unfamiliar area. However, I heard that a taught Master's Degree is worthless if I want to apply and become a lecturer in IPTA (will a Master's Degree be sufficient to apply to IPTA anyway? sweat.gif ). Is that true? Because I'm still planning to do that Master's that I can't afford in a few years time once my financial is strong enough and then purse a Ph.D in the same line and yes, I would like to specialise in that area.

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

first of all, in which area do u want to become an academician in? literature or advert design?

u can opt to work in either one of the fields, but the advantages will depend on ur eventual expertise. meaning, if u have a base in advert design, u can work in the faculty of design (or its variants), but later specialize in writing, literature, language or something like that, which can be useful for the profession. i believe there's a branch called copywriting in advertising, which might use somebody with such specialization like yours.

similarly, if u work in faculty of literature (or its variants), u'd contribute ur base knowledge on advertising. but this might not be as useful to the faculty as compared to the previous example, because the expertise/specialization counts more than ur base degree.

i myself is one such example. my base degree is in architecture, but my masters is in computing (virtual environment), and my phd is in education. these are three different fields, which i alone specialize in malaysia. right now i contribute directly to the advancement of architecture education in malaysia, especially in the areas of architectural or design computing. i do get calls from time to time to give advice on the matter from other schools, but now i'm concentrating on some works to streamline malaysian architecture education.

now, i dont really know about ur field, but taking my example, i'm sure u know the importance of being the only person who has expertise in that particular field. if not in the world, at least in malaysia. then u'll become highly sought after. remember, the current rate for invited speakers are RM200 per hour, not including accommodation, food and transport.

so u know ur field. u decide.

on the masters by taught course, it's accepted in IPTAs. what matters is your PhD. as long as the masters can qualify u for ur PhD, u're good to go. most people would even recommend taught course if u're doing a different field than ur base degree. well i did my masters by taught course, JPA (my main sponsors) didnt even ask a thing.

thanks, helped clarify things for me a lot there. I'm actually looking to specialize in Creative Writing and Copywriting can be categorized under that as well. However, I'm a little worried since the Creative Writing industry in Malaysia is still at a very early stage and there's only a few Uni that offers specialization in that (UiTM - though this is more towards screen, the faculty website states that one of their future courses will offer Creative Writing, UPSI & UMS).

I still have another question, you see there's not many choice to study literature in IPTA and those that have well, I'm guessing I didn't get in probably due to my base study which is not from literature and most probably because I was an IPTS graduate. If I were to take the course in an IPTS e.g. Limkokwing, OUM, etc can I still apply to become a lecturer for an IPTA? rclxub.gif

I heard- or read that the value of OUM certs are low compared to other IPTS. But as of now, I don't really have much of a choice. I could, take up other courses like Mass Comm/Comms and can still specialize in Copywriting but I'm just not into that. sweat.gif

it's not about whether it came from IPTS or not. it's the accreditation or recognition that comes with it. for example, MQA is the base line recognition u'll need. if the degree is recognised by MQA, u're relatively safe. if not, then there's a big risk that IPTAs will not recognise u either.

that aside, universities will often look at ur latest qualifications as well. so it doesnt matter where u did ur undergraduate, as long as it gets u to a prestigious postgraduate school for masters.

so with these qualifications, i recommend u to park urself in a reputable university even if its faculty is in its infancy. actually, that's even better, as u get to put urself as one of the senior members of the faculty pretty quickly.

thank you thumbup.gif

I've actually inquired about why I wasn't accepted. I was actually accepted. rclxm9.gif Only problem is they need to see my IELTS test results because my base degree is not from English line. I wonder, if it's worth it taking the IELTS to pursue Master's in a local uni? Because I did some research, UKM/UPM/UM doesn't have that requirement for their literature courses and they're more prestigious than IIUM. However, only UM has English Lit course.

I want to try and apply for UM but then I know it's hard to get in. It is UM after all... sweat.gif

Today is my first time applying for a gov job and the first time to use SPA portal, I'm looking for DS41 scheme which is a lecturer position. But I couldn't find any, how to apply lecturers job?

So far, I only know two method which are by applying through Pendaftar or the dean itself.

Other way?  hmm.gif

SPA recently changed their schemes didn't they? I also noticed that the DS41 scheme for lecturer positions are no longer offered through SPA once upon a time when I wanted to renew my application. Which also happened to be right after they changed their schemes.

Sad though but I think now the only way to become a lecturer is to apply through the university itself (like you said) or maybe you can ask azarimy there. He's helped answer most of my questions. Because I would like to know the answer to your question as well. Heheh. thumbup.gif

some universities in malaysia are 100% english. IIUM is the first one to achieve this (due to the title "international" in their name). so they use IELTS as the international benchmark ever since they first started, which i think is a good thing. so it's not about prestige or anything.

btw, do try UM. UM is one of the hardest university to get into, for UNDERGRADUATES. something that most people just assume and generalize. but the fact is, it's postgraduates are as easy (or hard) to get into as any other IPTAs in malaysia.

I happened to notice that you're lecturing in UTM? JB-rian here, hello! thumbup.gif

Ok back to the topic, as much as I would like to study in UM the course is a mixed mode and with me not having a background in English, I fear that I won't be able to excel in my research since I have yet to study that sector/industry. However, I have consulted one of my husband's relatives (a lecturer) who suggested that I try UPM. And since they have a coursework mode, I'm going to try.

IELTS is a tad too expensive for me right now, RM590 for entrance to a local Uni and the minimum band for entry is quite high as well. The prep classes are ridiculously expensive and so are the study materials. Though I've taken a look at some of the online examples, I'm afraid it won't be enough for me to achieve the band requirement. It would really be a waste if I didn't achieve the band requirement sweat.gif

Thank you though for taking time explaining things. You must be a good lecturer to your students. thumbup.gif

Does anybody has any experience lecturing in APU/APIIT/UCTI? Or knows anyone who does? I got an offer and it's my first lecturing job and I really don't know what to expect.

Plus, I'm currently doing my Master's as well. I don't want it to be like my current job where I'm currently having a hard time juggling both due to the workload (of both study and work).
