i suggest you read that post is for you to have a rough idea what is inside since we also discussed multimedia design in the one academy, MMU and some other collages. personally i prefer the one academy (TOA) & MMU. TOA do teach better in terms of visual design. MMU is focus more on technical execution / skill on softwares. MMU student can apply PTPTN easily for the study fee and it is at reasonable price.

multimedia course like mmu offered is focus on media like animation, interactive application, web design, game, motion graphics, 3d where u will be trained to use ur graphic design skills in various media. your skills will be valuable when u can apply the creative idea and visual skill to the media. That gives a very solid reason for company to hire you (and pay you more) since your work will be able to directly contribute to the final deliverables (which is the final artwork, eg a complete workable website).

since i'm ex-MMUer so i'll explain about MMU courses (might be outdated):

1st year is foundation, teaching all basics of art. mean while u will learn adobe photoshop, macromedia freehand (thats what i get last time, now might be adobe illustrator), adobe premier (video editing), and maybe adobe dreamweaver (my batch i only have 2 hours crash course for web design)

2nd year is focus on photography, 3D, Flash, video editing. first u will require to get a digital camera (maybe prosumer camera) to learn how to take different types of photo and the techniques. you will also learn 3D studio max and Maya. As i know now they teach flash since it is pretty demanding.

3rd year is the time for you to focus on your major, there are 5 majors in MMU:
1. Digital Media: focus on interactive media. you will learn about Game, Installation Art and Informative application.
2. Film and Animation: as the title said, but they dont really cover the film part, most of your time will be spending on 3D softwares and the animation techniques, motion graphic and visual effects (VFX).
3. Media Innovation: they teach u advertising, how to related each of the media and run a campaign. basically u learn a bit of everything but your main focus knowing how to create promotion campaign.
4. Interface design: sorry... not much idea about this. i saw the senior worked on some product design / pakaging...
5. Virtual Reality: a modern technology to simulate a unique experience, example: walking in a fantasy world etc. you will learn things like VRML, 3D to create virtual experience for PC user, installations, roadshows etc.

4th year: internship and final year project.

Hi, I don't know if its too late to reply but I'd still like to share, in case there're people who wanna go for Multimedia design..
I'm taking Multimedia design in TARC, sad to say, it sucks.
Yes it is the cheapest of all compared to institute like TOA and such.. and its true when they say "yat fan chin, yat fan fo" (canto)
I'm been through Diploma and currently am in my advanced year.
All through my diploma, all sorta things we learn are pure basic stuff. Basically, they teach u the base, the rest, find out for urself.
The lecturers.. some are good (as in 15%) but some... they really can make u go insane. shocking.gif

Maybe its because or shortage of lecturers.. (tarc don't pay you much, who wanna work)
They simply get lecturers to teach, some are not even master in the subjects they're teaching.. they just start learning after they've been assigned to teach tat certain subject. (a lecturer friend of mine told me) shakehead.gif

Yes, TARC offers LAN subjects but what from I've gone through, those LAN in tarc are slightly different. Its complicated..
To cut it short, I finished my LAN subjects in TARC diploma and I went to KBU for degree, they said I'm missing 2 LAN subjects and I had to retake.
Then i went back to TARC for advanced, I'm still studying English! and we have another LAN subject coming up..which is shocking bcos we tot we've finished those at diploma rclxub.gif

Now in advanced diploma, things are not that good either.
Lecturers teach outrageously different things which is totally unrelated to the subjects we're taking.. and those assignments one of our lecturers made us do, bliv me, they're outrageously ... retarded. And in the end no matter how much effort you put in or don't put in, he gives u and A rclxms.gif

One incident which really pissed me off is, there's one lecturer who din teach a single dang thing, starting from the beginning of the sem till the last. He always cancels class at last minute or arrive 1 hour late and then the class went on for 15 minutes, and then, "class dismiss" .. till the exam period, he sent us an outrageously long notes and asked us to read all without any tips.. how are we supposed to know wat the hell we're reading when he din even teach us a freakin single thing before...and he had the nerve to fail me (and alot of other ppl)! vmad.gif

When you complain to the management, they won't do anything because they're too busy gossiping and drinking coffee.

We have our internship lately and some of the fellow students have diffiiculty having companies to "adopt" them..The reason those companies gave are simple. " We don't take students from TARC, you guys have bad reputations " ... icon_question.gif

Thus, think twice. I'm not tryin to imply bad images of TARC onto ppl, just sharing what I've been through..Good days smile.gif

In my opinion, it all depends on you, if u can work hard, learn programs, explore your ability's you can be better than a student studying in a university.
My advice, choose the right uni, if u can go overseas, please do, then the rest is up to you.

Limkokwing might suck, but some of the students don't.

hi there,
why dont u try Institute Advertising Communication Training (IACT).it is located in Uptown, damansara utama. well, the outlook of the college is not nice nor attractive but the main thing u chooses a college is based on the qualification rite? brows.gif

giv me some time to promote my dear little college here.haha..i am a final year student there.tis college onli offer diploma courses and if u wanna continue degree, u can do it locally or oversea. IACT is actually a recommended college by the 4A (Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia), MAA (Malaysia Advertising Association) and IAA (International Advertising Association). i would say the fees is reasonable compare to other creative colleges.

although the main course here is advertising course, but the creative multimedia course here is not bad too. the good thing here is that u will graduate wit 2 diploma certs: 1 from IACT and 1 from New York Uni. so it is like killing 2 birds wit 1 stone.

besides that, the lecturers here are super friendly. they are approachable and willin to guide u in assignments. the management here are not that bad either.

i have a 5 to 6 classmates who transferred from TOA with the reason TOA "money minded".haha..i duno how far is true la..i asked them TOA better or IACT better in lecture vise. they said IACT!

well, this is all i can share with u.hehe..

Hey, just put it this way, I think any colleges you are choosing shouldn't be a big issue as long you go for those have a good reputation one. In fact I am a lecturer in one of the well know college, and have seen many students transferring in and out....For me the most important you are looking forward would be how much you are willing to learn in term of your own effort. Any college will do a good job if you are hardworking enough.

Of course if the college can have more opportunities to link and work on real industry projects than would be much better for you to own a stronger portfolio when you have graduated and work at industry in future. That may be one of the consideration for you.

One thing not mentioned. If you go TOA, you better be more than prepared for the workload. But I feel it's good training to get you mentally prepared for the industry.

Of course hard work will push you to do better... I lectured there before tongue.gif

But no matter where you study, I'd recommend that you do not underestimate the importance of presentation skills. And a good confident, command of English.

Design is not just confining yourself to your own world and interests, but opening yourself to a whole world of possibilities, IMHO.

EDIT: Hardwork is part and parcel of the design industry in general. Also, if you're struggling with assignment datelines, 50% of the problem lies in not putting in consistent amount of work times every week, so it'll all accumulate in the end. Hence the so called 'last minute' syndrome.
