Hello everyone,

Hunting zombies lately?

The ESPGL (Electronic Sports Professional Gamers League) Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare council will be responsible for your first Left 4 Dead Tournament.

The members of the ESPGL team have been responsible for the majority of CoD4 Tournaments here in Selangor and Singapore.

Here are some details :

Location/Venue : Blitzone, Damansara Jaya
Date/Time : 18th April 2009
Prizes : TBA

Rules and Regulations (In Game) :

1. Captioning is OFF. < so stop cheating with it in public games > drool.gif

the game itself can't be run without steam running, so while you won't need your own steam account with the game already purchased, there will definitely be either temporary tournament accounts as sold by valve specifically for tournaments, and expire after a set period, or already existing cafe accounts (valve requires tournaments to be run with tournament licenses, which are free). even LAN tournaments are supposed to adhere to those rules, iinm. however there's nothing that says that the steam accounts need to constantly be connected to the net, so its possible to activate, then switch to offline mode. either way we'll have to wait on the outcome of the negotiations between the organizers and licensors.

its fixed to normal via lobby game start, but it can be changed mid-game by console command.

The thing is, normal difficulty is enough to decimate a team of survivors because of the very short respawn time of 30 seconds, and the fact that the special infecteds are controlled by humans with brains.

Nope. All you need is your team. Registration fees paid and ready to kill some zombie players (with their non-player zombie friends). The cafe that hosts the game has 200 cdkeys which are licensed to them. So i doubt it will be an issue.

not really.. advanced... at first map, if timed and planned correctly, can wipe all survivors before even 60%.. if fail also, at least will badly injure 1 or 2 survivors

Well guys, the tourney should be in feb or march. The Registration fees will depend on the prizes, if the prizes are high, generally there will be a registration fee.

Adv VS mode is playable. Although Survivors may die early, its about who scores the most points. Regardless, you have more chance moving and winning with one or 2 man, rather than an entire team, but that would keep the scores more even and keep the game challenging as is.

When i play with pros on normal VS, they seem to just run through the entire map ignoring the normal zombies. Only stopping to kill during an attack. Otherwise, its just move and shoot with scores sky high, since the survivors are all alive.

In advanced mode, its rare that survivors survive episode 3 or the finale, but scoring there makes it more interesting, since its a hold and attack situation for 5 minutes.

Remember however, its a survival game against human infected players, not the campaign. smile.gif

the difficulty settings are done with z_difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Impossible). so as you can see, advanced is classified as Hard, and Expert is impossible tongue.gif

We can, depending on what the sponsors are providing.

If the offer is good, we can break some off for a different side event.

here's some advice you can practice on:

Well, in advanced mode, my advice is, stay together as survivors, 1 shotgunner, 2 rifles, 1 sniper.

the shotgunner is always in front, when engaging, crouch so the M16 can fire from behind.
The other M16 watches the back, the sniper taking most of the shots. The shotgunner should melee most of the time.

Some good boomer players will hit you 90% of the time. Generally, what you do in advanced mode is cuddle in a corner with the front members continously meleeing, while the guys at the back fire. In most cases, you can melee all the way, but you wont clear them fast enough before the next infected spawn. Play the game enough and you'll know where versus zombies can spawn. Maps are different in VS and campaigns with certain parts of the map changed.

Close doors behind you. Zombies need to break them before they come in, closing doors behind you is a good tactic to slow down infected players in enclosed spaces.

Always save a molotov for a tank/witch. Engaging a player controlled tank is dangerous and usually ends in horror for the survivors. burn him and run. take pot shots from time to time. You might lose a player but VS mode is about how many can survive or how far you go to score.

Communicate. Telling your ally theres something behind him is always a good thing. He's either your bait or a dead man. So its best to keep him/her alive as bait rather than you being the next target. The more baits you have, the more chance your team will survive together smile.gif

The gap between advanced and expert is simply too big, so the Time Trial is highly recommended.

And besides, edison fails against 2 tanks cuz he doesn't know what to do.

You need awesome leadership, and on-the-fly strategy thinking. ;]

The gap between advanced and expert is simply too big, so the Time Trial is highly recommended.

And besides, edison fails against 2 tanks cuz he doesn't know what to do.

You need awesome leadership, and on-the-fly strategy thinking. ;]

A tournament in blitzone is great ! But whats the version?? Please dont get any tournament running by using the old version which is 1.0.0.5 ..its totally buggy, with lots of exploit, glitch , error and so on..(please refer to the patch note)
The game difficulty is advance??Normal is too easy? wow.....means you been playing with noobs then.. try play in garena singapore room01..find players like polobear, pinkribbons, and their friends to play some inhouse game ok? dont just simply jump into conclusion normal is too easy and expert is too hard ya..

The tournament will be fun in version 1.0.0.8 or 9 which is the latest patch for the game..
If the ESPGL (Electronic Sports Professional Gamers League) ask why we need to update the game?? Then you ask them..why they wanna play dota 6.57b instead of playing old 5.84c or 6.48b?? Or you can ask them why wanna play the latest COD4 or COD5 patch.. And whats the reason the development game release the patches. (FOR A FAIR AND NICE GAME)

good luck and happy chinese new year =)

the version would be whatever the latest version is, because using steam updates your game automatically. therefore it isnt an issue. so far no one, not even ESP has brought it up as an issue, other than you, so i'm not sure why you're harping on it.

as for garena, we dont discuss it here as it allows for the play of pirated games online. sorry if i sound antagonistic, but the tone of your post kind of put me off.

As long as you have an original copy and run the game from STEAM, the game is always updated. Even if it's not, I'm sure the marshalls will come up with solutions to prevent exploits and glitches from being abused, disqualifications and such. Besides, competitors are allowed to file complaints against people who exploits.

New updates pl0x.

Ladies and gents, seeing that the input towards the difficulty is leaning heavily to normal, we might just change it. We at ESPGL listen to the public and would like to keep it that way. As for the versions, we would very likely use the most stable. Stable as in connection wise, gameplay wise, etc etc.

The argument of dota using the latest map, i will not argue about it as clearly you don't notice there are 2 segments available for downloads usually in getdota.com (one the most stable/suitable for tournaments, one the latest) Here the link to your dota -> http://getdota.com/

However, seeing that valve themselves are the spearhead to the development of L4D, we will most likely be using the latest versions, which also includes balances in infected characters (boomer cooldowns, spawns, damage etc etc)

Before i jump into any more "conclusions", i would first like to explain why the difficulty was chosen as advanced and not normal.

1. Makes the game faster
2. Although debatable, normal zombies are not as "persuasive" and their numbers are small, compared to an advanced difficulty setting. (check server.cfg if you don't believe me)
3. Far more obstacles = more interesting to view, for the spectators especially. Again, debatable.
4. Camping teams have less chance of winning in advanced, simply because they die faster.
5. Prevention of camping is important, simply because we might not have the time to accomadate 32 teams playing for 2 hours per session.
6. Seeing that an entire episode could last from 45m-1 hour (which is standard to any competitive FPS) each session will only consist of 1 map of all 5 episodes, including the finale. This makes the first 2 easy episodes more important to score, rather than to attempt to complete the finale.
7. TK damage is important. It requires a certain amount of skill to shoot accurately, a large amount of communication to not hit your mate. IF Tking is a big issue in your team, work on it more.
8. Despite being a "fun" tournament, i want the teams that put actual effort in the game to win, not some team to win by some fluke. If indeed Garena teams/players are awesome, i hope to see them in action during this tourney. Skilled players help in promoting this game smile.gif

I have played online many times, have seen hunter jumps do instant kills. Honestly, those who can do that require tremendous skill. If a team has that skill, they deserve to win. Hopefully we can get some good prizes for all of you with some goodies too smile.gif

Before i jump into any more "conclusions", i would first like to explain why the difficulty was chosen as advanced and not normal.

1. Makes the game faster - You mean survivors have less chance of surviving now
2. Although debatable, normal zombies are not as "persuasive" and their numbers are small, compared to an advanced difficulty setting. (check server.cfg if you don't believe me) - You obviously don't know why we have the boomer
3. Far more obstacles = more interesting to view, for the spectators especially. Again, debatable. - What obstacles? Die faster?
4. Camping teams have less chance of winning in advanced, simply because they die faster. - Then how do you survive a crescendo if you don't camp at the given spot?
5. Prevention of camping is important, simply because we might not have the time to accomadate 32 teams playing for 2 hours per session. - If you don't have the time then don't host it
6. Seeing that an entire episode could last from 45m-1 hour (which is standard to any competitive FPS) each session will only consist of 1 map of all 5 episodes, including the finale. This makes the first 2 easy episodes more important to score, rather than to attempt to complete the finale. - The map that decides the points are usually the middle parts where you could die easily. Removing them makes no logical sense
7. TK damage is important. It requires a certain amount of skill to shoot accurately, a large amount of communication to not hit your mate. IF Tking is a big issue in your team, work on it more. - The infected working together to bring you down is hell enough and you want to add more features to make survivors life a living hell?
8. Despite being a "fun" tournament, i want the teams that put actual effort in the game to win, not some team to win by some fluke. If indeed Garena teams/players are awesome, i hope to see them in action during this tourney. Skilled players help in promoting this game smile.gif - We've put in alot of effort in normal mode already especially as an infected. Advance is just like meh steamroll for the infecteds. Teamwork > skills as infected since alone you can't do shit unless ur in advance or expert as the campaign has proven? With access to boomer hell is nothing but a vomit away

I have played online many times, have seen hunter jumps do instant kills. Honestly, those who can do that require tremendous skill. If a team has that skill, they deserve to win. Hopefully we can get some good prizes for all of you with some goodies too smile.gif - If a hunter can execute an instant kill jumps then why bother having a competition? Oh guys lets camp at the highest spot on no mercy and wait for them to come out. When they get out from the door all of us pounce on them. That way either one or two will instant gib kekekekekekekekke. Just stop playing in garena and play it on steam for once

Anyway, I AFAIK, Blitzone has all PC ori of L4D, so I don't think Brian need to play in Garena.

And all he said is debatable, and u don't have give any retarded points that some really doesn't make sense.

Your replies are.. kind of immature.

For someone to say "if you dont have time, dont host", all i can say is "the world does not revolve around you" or perhaps "the world doesn't owe you anything". But lets not talk about that.

Anyway, a friend of mine who is in contact with L4D Devs says that Versus is by default Normal and shouldn't be changeble. With the devs saying this, that pretty much strikes a majority off that list. In newer versions, L4D Versus in any other difficulty besides Normal is considered a bug.
Since a majority of our tests were based on older versions, i believe this shouldnt be a problem once we finalize tourney settings. (this problem has been addressed to the proper "authorities" in regards to advanced mode versus)

Therefore, your normal L4D training will not go to waste it seems. This debate has brought us some good after all smile.gif

Looks like our tourney will be sooner than we thought and it looks like its NORMAL tongue.gif

Brian

To organizer, you guys should consider what to do if tank glitch ever happened. It happened to me last night when I'm suppose to be the 2nd tank in BH but ended up I never be one. Second time I saw this and it happened once in a blue moon, it might be good to come up some rules if tank glitch happened during the tournament.

yep, normal is enough actually. though advanced is 'survival-able', it wouldn't be as fun as normal as the game would be too short.

Just to add to this discussion, will a match be a whole full campaign?

To everyone else, how long does that take usually (1 whole campaign versus game)? At the end, does the game tally the points from all of the maps in the campaign as well and give a grand total? Does it announce who the winners are?

it has to be a full campaign. coz the winner is determined by the total points. and yes, it does say who wins(total points) after the finale (also shows points after each stage of a campaign).

1 whole campaign versus game normally takes about 1 and half hour to 2 hours. but the time all depends on the AI director as in whether He gives a tank or witch to create more damage or how good the team is (whether they can take the whole team down early in game).
The game can also be cut short by human error such as players misjudging the height of a building and jumping down to instant incap.

Referring to above post, it does not have to be a full campaign. competition can either have full campaign format or individual level format.
But the level will be played twice so that any uneven distribution of zombes can be somewhat avoided.
Team A and B: 1st round A as survivor B as infected, then swap to A infected B survivor. the game is then repeated on a 2nd round with B starting as survivor A infected, then swap to A survivor B infected. the scores will then be added up together to get a total.
this is an example on how to even out the random distribution of the zombie but if there are other ways which i'm not aware of please enlighten me.

Foreign leagues play only 1 section of the entire campaign (EG: No Mercy is divided into The Apartment, The Subway, The Sewers, The Hospital, Rooftop Finale), chosen by competitors.

Thanks for the replies.

So on average a whole match is around 1 and a half to 2 hours. I think for a tournament, that lasts too long for just_a_match. No wonder for international rules they just changed it to one map. With that in mind, I am assuming a match to be from as short as 5 minutes to half an hour depending on the skill level of both teams.

if 1 map per match, somemore it's hard difficulty, let say each team down in approximately 6 mins each, 12 mins total, imagine u just set up your shiny uber gaming gears. After 12 minutes then need to plug out, bla bla bla. Then after waited all teams played for only a few minutes, then u play then need to plug in and all sort of the thing. Just my 2 cents xD

Looking at things, it will most likely be a full campaign. This is because the time it takes to complete a campaign in normal is usually below that period (1 hour) I believe that if both teams are skilled, the game will actually finish faster (probably within 45 minutes) simply because both teams know how to score. (If its too fast, it defeats the purpose)

Generally the auto-score recording mechanism makes things easy to handle, which reduces the down time usually.

Even if they are halted by the infected, it could simply mean they're taking their time to heal up or pick up ammo. Take it as an expert mode campaign time frame. Usually between 1-1.5 hours.

As for the Auto-director in L4D can be disabled and replaced by configs, but that way, most of the spawns and numbers will be the same. The auto-director tends to favor the losing team with spawns (tank particularly) but by removing that, you may lose the suprise factor of the game.

Generally speaking, L4D isn't made for professional gaming, more towards semi-casual to semi-competitive plays.

We want to make it fun, challenging and let people get something out of it in the end smile.gif

E-club is hosting the time challenge, ESPGL will still host the VS compy in march. So don't worry. Join the E-club one, have some fun (you might see us there too) and we'll see you again in March for the VS compy! smile.gif
