December 1st 1959 is a date that will forever be etched in the annals of Anfield history. For it was on this day that Liverpool Football Club announced Huddersfield Town boss Bill Shankly would be their new manager in succession to Phil Taylor.

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.

Manchester United fans...

a) don't even come from Manchester. Most of them are from out of town, or "greater Manchester" as they call it. Almost every Pakistani cab driver I saw supports Manchester United. You can tell by their car stickers. The locals support their blue collared rivals, City.

b) seem to enjoy knocking their rivals. You hardly see any Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool supporter abusing the other's club when there isn't a match between the three. Mancs on the other hand seem compelled to hurl insults at us whenever they get up in the morning. Why? Beats the heck out of me. They are after all the most successful and biggest club in England. Pick on somebody your own size eh?

c) are amongst the most optimistic though they tend to cross the line, entering the zone of arrogance. If you have monitored their thread, you'd notice that certain posters are already prepared for the final in Moscow. Who the heck are Barcelona anyway but some small Catalan Club with miniature players? I have to admit I admire their confidence.

d) seem to disappear the day after a loss, especially if it's to Liverpool. My lads and I put our kits on especially after a defeat. We live and die with the club, we don't feel ashamed as I assume they do.

e) in Malaysia have not been through tough times. Smooth sailing all the way. No Premiership title in 4 years? "Ohhh noooo!! tragedy, dark days!". Puhleeezzzz. What drama. It's easier to knock others when they are down but your day will come and we'll see if you switch allegiances then. Those of us who have been fans from the 80's/90's have walked the walk, and talked the talked, we are still Liverpool fans. Let's see if you can make a similar claim in the decades to come. Manchester United marketed themselves in Asia as a brand, and like any other brand, they will go out of fashion at some point. Like any other brand that goes out of fashion, they will be replaced. People think they have loyalty to a particular brand, but only if that brand maintains it's image and keeps churning out proper products.

f) are extremely quiet at games. They make most of their noise on message boards or forums such as these. I've been to the FA Cup Final viewing here between Manchester United and Arsenal. Needless to say there was a huge turn out with most fans more content with chatting to one another than singing or chanting. Maybe they should start handing out song sheets? I've also been to the one between them and us, with their official fan club in attendance mind you. Even met and shook hands with the president, Lawrence. Fans at Old Trafford are no different. Ferguson has already complained about the distinct silence. They make mock our 12th man claim but ask anyone if they feel more confident and raise their game with a veracious crowd behind them? It's common sense.

g) mostly only know one song, and not even the complete version at that. They go "glory glory man utd x 1000000000000", like a broken record. Once again, song sheets please.

h) can't bring themselves to congratulate their rivals even after a good game of football, should they end up on the losing end of course.

i) always claim they played like crap, and not that their rivals played well, when they lose. Oh, they also like to lay blame to everything else except for themselves i.e. Referee, rough play, lack of protection for Ronaldo, wind sheer factor, oxygen content in the air, number of blades of grass per square foot, etc.

Think the above pretty much sums up my thoughts. I have of course described the fans that I know personally. I'm sure there are exceptions, as boon has mentioned, but I have to call it as I see it.

QUOTE
REDS AROUND THE WORLD: MALAYSIA
Jonno Lim, Malaysia 13 January 2009

Meet 32-year-old events manager Jonno Lim, who helps run an independent supporters’ club and gets up at the crack of dawn to catch the Reds in action with hundreds of other fans in a crowded Malaysian bar.

Like most things, my association with the Malaysian independent supporters' club started with a few beers. After meeting on the fans' forum Red and White Kop (RAWK), we decided that as there were a fair number of us Reds in the same corner of the world, the least we could do was watch a game together in a bar.

Liverpool ran home 3-0 winners over Everton at Goodison Park that day in August 2003, with Michael Owen scoring a brace and Harry Kewell getting the third goal just before the final whistle.

Having supported the club from afar for so long, it felt very special to be enjoying a Liverpool victory with a few like-minded people. I had watched the Reds with friends before, but nothing like this. Even the owner of the Boardwalk on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur was a Reds fanatic, so it became known as the closest thing any Malaysian Red could get to the special Anfield atmosphere.

There are so many Liverpool fans in this part of the world, and they all have their own story to tell. Some adopt the Reds because of their history, others simply get drawn in by the miracle of Istanbul in 2005 or the breathtaking 'Gerrard Final' of 2006.

user posted image

The only reason I can offer for following the Reds is probably quite similar to most people's - all of my family are massive Liverpool fans. It goes way back to the seventies and beyond, so it was a no-brainer for me to be the same as them.

My earliest memory is of Michael Thomas and Ian Rush securing the FA Cup for Liverpool with great goals against Sunderland at Wembley in 1992. I can also vividly remember Neil 'Razor' Ruddock holding his head after scoring a late equaliser in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester United in January 1994.

Nigel Clough scored twice that day, but the look on Ruddock's face will remain with me forever - the ball hit him on the top of his head before going in the net and he seemed in quite a lot of pain while celebrating his decisive goal at Anfield. I couldn't stop laughing.

As time went by, my Liverpool obsession grew. We experienced many joyous Saturday and Sunday nights at the Boardwalk over the years and celebrated many great Liverpool victories there. But our friend, Bala, soon told us he had to sell his bar and we were left with nowhere to watch our beloved Reds during the early hours of the morning over here in Malaysia.

And when the new owner of the Boardwalk told us they would not be opening for the 2007 Champions League final clash with AC Milan due to the fact it would be kicking off at 3.30am over here, we knew that we had to act quickly to find a new venue.

After a long and frustrating search, we finally found a small pub that would open for the match. We got in touch with our friends and fellow supporters to join us for the big game, as we knew that whenever Liverpool was involved in a big European game, it was guaranteed to be something special.

user posted image

We only really expected about 50 people to turn up at the most, but the bar ended up being crammed full with about 200 fans, all screaming at the screen, willing on the Reds. We were all disappointed that Rafa's men did not win that night in Athens, but a few of us knew right then that not only did we need a bigger venue, but also a proper fan club to bring all of these Liverpool supporters together.

We called our new supporters' club 'MyRAWK', as most of us had met through RAWK, while the ‘My’ stands for Malaysia and also gives us a sense that a certain part of LFC can belong to us individually.

Things were tough at the beginning, but settling on the M Bar as our exclusive home for watching all the games helped us a lot. The owner agreed to open up at all the unsociable hours involved in supporting a club many miles away and laid on a host of generous drinks offers.

What started as a small MyRAWK blog soon turned into a full website, and before long we had Liverpool fans joining us from all over for our match-viewing parties. From local lawyers to homesick expats, tourists to ex players (Ian Rush once even joined us - that was a very special day), the M Bar is now full of fervent fans week in, week out. I usually take up the microphone at each event and am always proud to be the official master of ceremonies.

We even have our futsal team and are also in the process of setting up a full 11-a side side. Our interim team recently won our first trophy, the Christmas Cup and one day we hope to have a proper team which takes part in the local social league.

user posted image

But due to the exchange rate and distance, not many of us have been lucky enough to get over to Anfield. I am currently saving up to make the pilgrimage one day next season with a few other fans. I'm sure that once we get up close to Liverpool's hallowed home, there will be many of us who will be close to tears, as this would be nothing short of our visiting our very own Mecca.

One of our newer members, Phil, who now lives in Liverpool, always talks about how unbelievable it is that a bunch of guys who have never seen the Reds play up close can wake up in the middle of the night to support a team who are playing nearly 7,000 miles away, only to go back to bed and rise for work less than two hours later.

But none of us at MyRAWK would have it any other way. Witnessing another Liverpool victory make all the long, sleepy days in the office after a match worth it - and believe you me, there have been a lot of those in recent years.

Sammy: Reds must maintain focus

Assistant boss Sammy Lee maintains Premier League leaders Liverpool must not start looking anxiously over their shoulders at Manchester United.

user posted image

By the time manager Rafael Benitez returns to work following a third operation on his troublesome kidney stone complaint ahead of the league and FA Cup double-header against Merseyside rivals Everton, the Reds could well have been knocked off the top of the table should, as expected, a resurgent United win both of their games in hand.

While the pundits may already be predicting the downfall of the Anfield club - who last won the English championship in 1990, Lee insists the team must just focus on their own performances rather than worry about what may happen or is being claimed elsewhere.

"A lot of pundits have said there's only one team that can win the league - and I don't buy into that, either. You can't rule teams out in January," Lee told the club's official website.

"We can't keep looking over our shoulders. We have got to do what we have got to do."

There was, though, little hiding the disappointment following Liverpool's goalless draw on Stoke, which allowed United to close the gap on them to five points after they thumped Chelsea 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Lee said: "That is the measure of this team at the moment - that we go away from home and get a point in the Premier League and we are disappointed.

"We go for all three points, but we have to take the positives. The game did not transpire how we would have liked - we had control and we lost it.

"But the positives, for me, were that we got a point and we did not concede from the many, many set pieces that they had."

Benitez, 48, has watched Liverpool from the directors' box since his last operation in December.

The Spaniard, who is close to agreeing a new deal, will, according to Lee, be eager to return to his hands-on role as soon as possible.

"It is a difficult time for him because all he wants to do is be out there on the training pitch with his players, but he is still buoyant," said Lee.

"He is going for the third operation, but we are hoping it won't keep him out for too long - hopefully just a couple of days."

Lee added: "All credit to Rafa for what he's put in place. His attention to detail and organisation means that, if any one of us is missing, there won't be a blip."

Striker Fernando Torres, meanwhile, is eager to get the chance to sink Merseyside rivals Everton twice in a week.

The Reds are next in Premier League action on Monday night, before the Toffees make the short journey across Stanley Park again in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Torres has hit three goals in two games against Everton, and after coming off the bench in recent matches as he regains full match fitness, the Spaniard has set his sights firmly on inflicting more derby misery.

"You can feel the excitement of the fans the day before the game," he said in the Liverpool Echo.

"Before the last one I had people coming up to me telling me 'you have to win, you have to win' and 'you have to score'.

"I had never scored a goal in a derby game before I came to this country so to get three in two games against Everton and to win both of them is fantastic.

"I hope to play against Everton again this time and I hope to be able to score again."
