Hi everyone, I am going to Sydney UNSW in February but I haven't got a place to stay, so I plan to book for short term lodge for a week and find accommodation during the week.

Question: I email the lodge asking how to place a booking, the lodge ask me to provide them my credit card details to secure a booking. Is it safe simply give them the details ? I am quite worried about that ! Anyone used to book this kind of lodge before flying to Australia? Can advise me on this ? THANKS !!

Is it the temporary accommodation?

It should be alright as you are paying the university.

I did apply for the temporary accommodation last time.

Erm.... I found the lodge in UNSW website.
But not paying to the university, is paying to the lodge is directly, that's why I worried about it.
It is private, tak sangkut with the university.

By the way, how you apply temporary accommodation through UNSW last time ?I think it safer.
I want to get the information, but the online advisors always offline vmad.gif
*
I think there is a form behind the prospectus to request for temporary accommodation from ISS.

I'm sorry if this question has been posted before. I'll be flying to Perth via air asia this sunday. From what i understand from their website, they charge rm 15 for every kg in excess of the 25kg i have bought during booking (i intend to get an extra 15kg if that is true). Did i get my facts right? And does anyone know what is the maximum baggage allowance? I tried calling airasia numerous times but their lines are always busy.
*
Dont exceed the weight limit.

They gonna charge more than you think.

I got charged RM500+ for exceeding 5kg.

I really doubt is RM15 per kg.

If not,i wont have to payed RM500 through my nose.

There are rules, you know.If they say 25kg,then,please follow their requirement.Exceed 2-3kg is ok,if im not wrong but not till 15kg.It's ridiculous.

For departures to and from China/Australia- Checked baggage weight that is not pre-booked will be charged at the airport rate of a minimum of 15kg and every kg  thereafter will be charged at RM15/AUD5/CNY36 per kg

It says a minimum of RM15 per kg.Not RM15 per kg.

I m going to UNSW this FEB. & i still cant find any suitable accommodation coz most accom that are reasonable have been fully-booked.

So, is there any off-campus accommodation that i can book that are cheaper?

or izit still possible to find cheaper accommodation the time i reach UNSW in mid-feb?
*
I think you just send the Temporary Accomodation to ISS.There should be a form to request for it behind the prospectus.

Then, try to go there early to get the accommodation.

QUOTE(jae @ Jan 19 2009, 08:36 PM)
If this is your first time heading over to Sydney, which I assume you are, I think it is best that you look for your accommodation after you arrive. It is however, a good idea to book a temporary accommodation. You can approach the uni accommodation service for help on temporary accommodation bookings or alternatively Malaysian Hall which is located along Alison Road, but I have never dealt with Malaysian Hall before so don't ask me anything about it, all I know is they used to provide temporary accommodation for Malaysian with a low daily rate compared to the other temporary accommodation out there, not sure if they still do that now.

Although I have never looked for a place in Kingsford before, but based on what I gathered from my friends who did, good places around uni would be taken by mid-feb. I wouldn't say it's totally impossible, but definitely it wouldn't be easy by all means.
*
Malaysian Hall is always fully booked.Very hard to get it unless you book early.

I've check, and I am confuse with all those diff packages. I am looking on wireless broadband instead of fixed line, coz im staying in a student accommodation, and I dun think I can use their fix line to register, and I believe it will be very troublesome when I move out next time. So do wireless broadband come with unlimited package? how i wish streamyx are thr so that I dun need to worry,lols...

It's expensive and hard to get unlimited internet connection in Aus.

You have to watch your usage when you are in Aus.No more torreting 24/7.

those in aussie or have been to aussie, i wanna ask how to satisfy your needs for latest drama series like Heroes, TVB etc??
well, downloading from BT is a serious offence over there right??
*
For me,i dont watch at all.BT in Aus is quite difficult,IMO.

Grab a few good ori games and bring it there.Since there is no Streamyx there, you could play online better than here.

Lol. Download away biggrin.gif

Buy a few ori games? w00t! RA3, SC2 and the likes.

Btw, i've only ever been on Air Asia flights. I've flown 3 times. No problems for me, and i'm 181cm. Maybe you guys are claustrophobic? Afraid of tight spaces? I just sleep on the plane. 30 min flight I also can sleep xD I love sleeping while traveling. So fun. U wake up ur almost at ur destination d biggrin.gif
*
I just buy a few ori games and bring over.I dont watch dramas at all,so it doesnt bother me.It's a waste of time and bandwidth to get them.

I have ori RA3 now, with a few other good games like CoH,DoW,Spore and Sins of Solar Empire.Considering to get DoW2 ori too.If im really desperate for a game, there is Empire:Total War which is coming out in march and SC2 Beta later on.I have signed up for DiRT 2 Beta too. It's enough to keep me entertained.

The PC games industry is dying due to piracy. Also, respect other people's intellectual property.Making a software isnt easy in the first place. So,it's either original, use free alternatives or dont use it.

I do plan to get original AutoCAD,if the price is not ridiculous.

I will go to sydney UNSW in this month but I still searching for the accommodation. I am starting worries about that because most of the colleges and university apartment have been reached the capacity.

I still dunno where to live when I arrive there.
Anyone can help me?

Like what i said last time.Get the temporary accommodation sorted out. Then, look for a place yourself or you found some friends to find with you. It's very hard to get an accommodation in UNSW colleges as some of them have high demands like one Distinction per semester or there is a very long waiting list which is almost impossible to get.

There should be a form behind your prospectus to request ISS to give you a temporary accommodation for short term like a week or 2.Probably look for the form in some UNSW site.Probably the ISS site.

Those places will probably cost you 200AUD per week.Pretty expensive but it's better than staying in hotel.

I stayed in a Monastery last year, during the first week im there.

I enrolled in 3 courses (18 UOC).  18 of 24 UOC. others subjects required Corequisite and  prerequisite. It's ok?

Your school should have a list of subjects that you should take each semester.Look for it.

And please, don't chug your textbooks along, zap 'em from your library.
*
I dont see why i shouldnt bring textbooks from here.It cost a lot more to buy there and the library dont have that many books for you to borrow.Especially if it's a core textbook that is needed in tutorials.

Well orientation week (we call it O-Week) here is sorta like a funfair, there will be stalls by most of the clubs/student organizations as well as other external parties like SMH, Sydney Buses, Banks etc. There is also the Yellow Shirt volunteers giving out flyers, helping out as well as conducting campus tours, it is not a bad idea to take part in one of those campus tours to familiarize yourself with the buildings' names on campus.

Regarding the lectures, no, there isn't any lecture during O-Week.

If you are talking about attendance for orientation, then no, attendance is not compulsory. Heck even attendance for lectures is not compulsory. But as a first year student, I do strongly suggest that you spend at least a day or two to attend the orientation programs, make sure you grab a campus map as well. Trust me, it helps a lot having a map in hand during the first few weeks.

Hope this helps.

Mind me asking, which UNSW log-in website is suppose to be the one containing our lecture notes uploaded by our lecturers?

I have seen myunsw, vista (which i dunno what's for)???, my student email which is UNIMAIL, and unsw library website, and many more.....
So, which one is suppose to be? rclxub.gif
*
Vista is the site that contains all your course material.

Most schools use that site but some lecturers have their own external site to distribute their material. The lecturers will let you know where to get your materials in the first lecture.

Dont worry la.
