hey guys i think aussie is gonna stop permitting PR application for foreign students starting next year? That means after study cannot stay?

oh really? that's bad. Mind to tell more? Didn't read news. You mean for foreign students who will graduate last by this year? I mean last batch of 2009 graduate? There's a thought of studying there to find a job after graduation sad.gif

I'm planning to study in Australia and most probably within Sydney. I'm completely new in doing research for education in Australia. I glanced through the universities listed in Sydney especially the fees but I'm still rather clueless.

What could be the most affordable University in Sydney for business degree (finance, econs) yet wouldn't compromise its quality? Recommendation? So far, I suppose it's University of Western Sydney, if I'm not wrong? Is it hard to enter? Idea? Thanks

You might want to consider some other places as well . Not just Sydney . Sydney is a highly populated city , So the fees would still be ''high'' regardless of places as all of them are quite competitive ( UNI ) . You may also want to try Tasmania ? Perth ? Just look around and compare . Recognition wise - It won't differ that much .

Thank you for the advice. I somehow inclined towards Sydney because of the available accomodation. I might be able to settle within Sydney. I don't know much about Australia but I heard the living expenses is quite expensive in Sydney? Subjectively asking, will it be cheaper for me to afford education in other province + acco + living expenses compared to Sydney's just education + living expenses only?

Anyone can give me some insight in this matter?

Highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm if you are planning to pursue your tertiary education as a full fee international student, I would recommend you entering one of the more reputable universities, assuming you meet the requirements for them. And for your case, USyd, UNSW, Macq U and UTS are the 4 top universities in the state. Obviously the first two are the top unis here in Sydney, so if you are able to get into one of them and fees is not too much of an issue, it'd be a good idea to do so. I don't know what restriction or limitation you have in terms of financial matter, but if you can afford to pay that extra few grand, I would say go for the better ranked/more reputable ones.
Where would your accommodation be in Sydney? If you live too far away from uni, your weekly transportation cost will form a significant portion of your weekly expenses. Generally, Sydney is prolly the most expensive city in Australia, but if you eat in for most of your meals and don't go out much, it is still pretty affordable as difference in grocery prices aren't that significant compared to the other cities. I'm not too sure how much does accommodation cost in other cities, but if you can save on accommodation here in Sydney, I reckon that itself would be quite a big amount.

Yes, I will be a fully self support international student. As a matter of fact, finance $$$ is indeed my first and main concern in my plan to go over there. I've a strict budget and looking at those top universities you recommended, it's slightly above the current budget I'm working on. Hence i'm looking for affordable university with of course certain prestige to go with. The cheaper the better but of course, with quality.

Anyway, I suppose I meet the basic university entry requirement based on my one glance research. However, a point to note, I was actually from science stream while doing my STPM. I suppose it wouldn't be an issue for me to get over to business course right?

Will you guide me in suggesting a few reputable universities in Australia, let say if I forgo the convenience of that available accommodation? I'm okay with other locations in Australia other than Sydney because if I were to settle down on my own, Sydney isn't an ideal place for economical lifestyle. You were right about living too far and having to travel daily will also increase my expenses.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, does staying in different cities affect my chance of employment for part time job? Cause I don't really know much about Australia. Taking an example in Malaysia, people actually come to KL or bigger cities to find job as it's harder to get job in small town and etc. Though I also believe there's more competition in big city like Sydney. Any tips, anybody? I need to earn some money for my allowance.

Also, since I'm doing all the research on my own and there's nobody for me to really refer to. I don't even know how to narrow down my search for universities (location wise *like where is exactly where and I don't even know where is where tongue.gif, accommodation, living expenses, reputable uni for my chosen course)

People, do you think it will help if I go over to Australia to really see the environment and survey from university to university in helping me to decide on my university? I have not decided on any university yet.

I'm still afraid of having issue with adapting to new environment all on my own unsure.gif

thanks for any suggestions and advice ya.

1. If you're living in a small rural town where there are only two rows of shops which close by 5pm, chances are there won't be many jobs for you. Then again, it also depends on what kind of part time work you are expecting. Generally speaking, larger cities would have more opportunities for part time work.

2. Information about universities... You could ask around the forum, but most of us probably only studied in one/two universities before hence it's not easy to compare between different unis of different states. Get in contact with education agents eg IDP, AusEd, JM - the caveat is that most of them only provide info regarding the unis that they are linked with. Information about living costs on the other hand, we might possibly give you more info that they could.

3. Visiting Australia prior to enrollment... personally I don't see how that could help, unless you're planning to stay here for many months. A short 5 day visit would probably be more like a holiday, rather than truly experiencing the living environment and culture. But of course, if you want to come over for a visit, just treat it as a holiday biggrin.gif

4. It's hard to predict how well/bad you would adapt to the lifestyle in Australia. You'll never know until you try it, but the advice here is that - no matter where you go you would have to adapt, even back in our own country. My first 3 months after leaving home for college in KL weren't exactly the best, yet after 1/2 a year it was splendid.

Thanks for your advice!

I honestly admit that other than I've never visited Australia to know more about it, I'm also somehow ignorant. I don't know which location is considered the 'rural town' and which isn't. unsure.gif I'm actually comparing Adelaide with Sydney + Melbourne. I heard Adelaide is a very laid back city so I'm also trying to find out if Adelaide is 'smaller city' I'm imagining in my comparison to Sydney and Melbourne.

What I did is just looking from each university homepage to another university homepage. I also don't know how to judge which is the 'better' here.

Yeah, if I were to visit the country, I will probably stay more than 1 month to 2 months to do university hopping survey. I don't know if it will help me in deciding which university I want and if it doesn't, might as well save up the money which I've to spend to live there for 2 months. Moreover, going from city to city, it will cost a big sum. However, at least I have a clearer picture of what city is where and how it's like laugh.gif
