Nice Foldie! How much did u pay for it? Mind sharing where u bought it? My wife and myself want to get ourselves a Foldie each. We live in Sbg Jaya, Perai. Thx.

Guys, I'm a noob and thinking of getting foldies for wifey and myself. I recently saw a Dash P18 2012 couple of mths old fantastic condition (no scratches, tyres almost new - according to shop owner, bike owner didn't ride much) for RM1.7k. Is it ok? Or shud I get speed p8 instead @RM1.9k instead?

The Speed P8 is an older model but a good one. There are some leftover stocks  you just have to go look for them. I saw one red colour selling for RM1.7K (brand new). I hear there are many more. You can also consider the older MU P8 which can be had for 2K. Avoid  the Dr.Hon Visc P18 though, there's a manufacturer defect on components.

The Dash P18 advantage is more gearing choices though. The old 2012 is also better built than the newer Dash. Nice to see potential foldie rider.  thumbup.gif

Thx.. I'll b collecting 1 speed P8 & 1 Dash P18 this Saturday from Chin Aik. Any upgrades I need to do immediately or do I just ride first and decide later? Excited!! rclxms.gif

The Dash P18 is already good enough, in fact for most rides. Any modification is more to cosmetic. As for the rims, the next step is the Kinetix Pro which is RM2000 which I feel is not really worth the upgrade. Probably a sensible upgrade is to change the rear hub to a 4 sealed bearing unit. But hard to find a 28 holed hub locally. The front hub is a sealed bearing unit.  thumbup.gif

Been riding couple of days now and hv got a pretty good comparison btw the Speed P8 and Dash P18. I love the Dash better but it's more bouncy compared to d Speed. I'm willing to sacrifice performance for comfort. Can I change the tyres to Big Apple without changing the rims etc? Thx guys.

I contacted Chin Aik and he said cant use Big Apple as the tires r too wide for Dash P18 frame. He recommended Marathon (20x1.5) and said d ride quality will improve significantly compared with my Kojaks. Will it? He quoted RM120 for a set.

Btw, Thx Bro Etigge & H2D for ur advice.

It seems like d tires can fit but d v brake is soooo tight, since I don't really know how to adjust/tune d v brake, I took both bikes to Chin Aik and asked them to test it out before they order the tires. Dowan to waste $$ to buy 2" only to find it can't fit. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I think u looking at the bikes from Eng Hong Raja Uda, right? The 20in shud b RM850 while the 26in shud b RM950. These hummers look good and I was tempted to get them but got Dahons instead. Folding mechanism was d deciding factor as it was miles apart.

Quick check with the seniors on this topic of folding bikes

Am planning to get one and would like to get the Montague Paratrooper, but the price seems to be rather high. Anyone has a favorite bike shop with excellent price that i should go to?

Was also tempted in getting the China Hummer models, but given the fact that i am about 5'8 and about 95kg, am afraid the stress i put i put on the bike will kill it faster ...

Any view on this would be appreciated and btw the last i ride was back in school days ... this something i woul dlike to get back into ... cycling

If u r in Penang, u can check out Kalachia at Penang Times Square. When I checked with them, it was about RM3.5k(24 spd-Paratrooper)-3.9k(27spd-Paratrooper Pro) for ori Montague with Clix Release System.

Thx to ur Brilliant Suggestion of swapping wheels with wifey's Speed P8, I showed Chin Aik and they ordered the BA. The tires makes a Huuugeeee difference. Rides thru road imperfections like a dream. Can save money I intended to use for chiropractor liao.. Hehe.. The saddle is a Ergogel Moderate and its very comfy. I can go for my routine 25-30km (1hr) trips without my padded shorts. Love to cycle using back roads passing by paddy fields and kampung to Mengkuang Dam.

Forgot to answer ur q about cyclometer. It's a Sigma STS 1609 with optional Cadence. Bought 2 sets at same time (for wife oso).

Check out the folding mechanism for both and then u'll know. The clix at d frame makes a huge difference. Over here, Paratrooper @Kalachia RM3.5k and China hummer 26in @Eng Hong is RM950 (Hummer 20in is RM850). I think both r ok, just find a suitable one basing upon ur requirements. If u tend to fold a lot, then pay attention to folding mechanism. If u fold just occasionally, the ride vs budget issue comes in. Ride wise both don't differ much albeit my test was on a very short run. I had d same dilemma as u but settled for another instead. I think Bro Gilbert is using the China Hummer. Can ask his input.

Just wonder how is the ride to Mengkuang Dam? Start from where? and how long would it take? I like to try this road also but don't know how to go..

Yup, I'm staying Seberang Jaya. Just last Sunday, my wife and myself parked my car at jetty, took our bikes across on d ferry and cycled to Straits Quay to attend MITM travel fair. Bought trip to Taiwan on 3rd Nov with Lye Peng.. smile.gif Dropped over at sis place in Fettes Park and had dinner at Pang Hainan seafood (d buttered tiger prawns is to die for). Then it rained, they had to drop us and our bikes at the ferry. Left mainland at 4pm, reached home at 12.30midnite. Round trip <30km but we covered about 14km only due to the rain.

The track I use is thru Jln Kumbang Semang (paddy fields) to Kubang Semang town and use new flyover (good uphill) to Mengkuang Dam. From my house at Tmn Seri Arowana to Mengkuang Dam and back is about 35-40km. If u pusing2 Mengkuang dam, it takes more. Vehicles (inc buses and trucks) r more tolerant than anywhere else in Penang.

Gilbert, do u stay on mainland? If so, wanna join trip organized by Kelab Berbasikal Butterworth? It's on 15th Sept and can register at Eng Hong. Uncle recommended me the ride. The recent Heritage night ride also recommended by him. We registered for Cycling For A Lane 5 (CFAL5) on 8th of Sept also but it's 82+km against Road+Mountain Bikes. So, now training for that goal.. If not we KO!

Hahaha.. I stay near Raja uda, But not very familiar with Kumbang Semang.. Can i join u next time to Mengkuang Dam..?

What Event its that on 15th Sept by KBB?

I read ur previous post, did u do something with ur bike? what did u change or upgrade?

Sure. Weekdays: If 7am or 4pm, I normally go by myself, if 6+pm, I'll go with wife. Weekends: Either rides or hike at Cherok Tok Kun. Will info nxt time I ride. It's not consistent as I work shifts.

15/09: Kempen Kayuhan Berbasikal - Everyone Can Ride (Tony F, pls don't sue). Since u stay in R.Uda, u can get more info from Uncle. Too bad it clashes with Penang Star Walk 2013.

Apart from multiple LEDs for night rides, I only change saddle and install wireless meter with cadence.

There's a weekly night ride for BM riders. Gathering at Mini Velo (beside Hong Leong), Tmn Desa Damai every Thu by 8.30pm. Wanted to join yesterday but it rained.

If that's the case, it is manufacturer's fault. The bike shop should change the tyres but if they admit and detect the wire beading jutting out from the tyres.

The other day, I changed my daughter's Dahon Speed P8's Schwalbe Big Apple to my wife's bike. She didn't like it but my daughter was happy with the Dahon Rotolo's. I have an extra pair of Rotolos and I am going to take out the Big Apples. Anyone want to buy a cheap pair of Schwalbe Big Apple?  tongue.gif

I'm interested in ur Apples... Dat sounds so wrong!!! Can PM me ur price? Seriously love BA.

On a side note, I've got my Kojaks at home. Anyone wanna trade? Kojaks for Apples! Hehe..

I'm from Penang and not KL so I don't really know where to get Big Apple or DTH in KL but from this forum and Samo's, Johnny Ng's My Bicycle Shop at Bdr Utama is a good bet. Maybe u can also get his expert opinion.

I have used Schwalbe's Big Apple and also the Maxxis DTH and I can conclude that the Maxxis is a better tyre given that they both cost the same. Big Apples are heavier as Maxxis DTH are foldable tyres, really light. You can feel the weight difference when shodded. If weight is not important, you can also change to the cheaper BMX treaded tyres. Their grip is good but prepare to pedal a bit harder and it is also about 1.9 to 2.0. They cost only RM25 each. It's been in the market for so long.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Will definitely give DTH a try once my Apples gives out or botak. That may be many miles more though.

On another note, will changing rear hub to 4 sealed bearing unit give much of a difference? This is in reference to Dash P18. Itchy to upgrade.

So, better to maintain with this current setup til something happens then change to a better wheel set? Darn it.. Then my itchiness must b transferred to my wife's P8 then.
