I don't think SONY will axe PS-Division, probably downsize it accordingly, like what MS did.

PS3 is not a failure like Saturn, DreamCast or 3DO. It has probably lost the race, but making money should be within reach in 2009/10. It will be foolish to dis-continue PS3, with PS being one of the most recognized brand worldwide.

PSP is a success. Very successful indeed. Don't touch it, it is a Cash-Cow, not sacred cow.

More pointedly, NPD’s numbers for June reveal that Sony Computer Entertainment has recently enjoyed a massive hardware sales injection of around 94 percent thanks to the attraction of its eagerly-awaited exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Compounding that software and hardware popularity, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4 has garnered near-universal acclaim since its retail arrival and ranks as June’s best-selling videogame -- stealing top-spot from Take-Two Interactive’s Grand Theft Auto IV, which has been top of the software chart since its April release.

Powered by its high-profile exclusive, Sony managed to sell 405,000 PlayStation 3 consoles throughout June, reports NPD, which is a marked increase from the 208,700 console sales attributed to it during May.

“Exclusive content usually fuels hardware system purchases and PS3 sales certainly reflect the impact of Metal Gear Solid 4,” commented NPD analyst Anita Frazer before also confirming that the PlayStation 3’s most recent performance is a sales record for the console in a non-holiday month.

While Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) is doubtless revelling in the upsurge of its powerhouse hardware, main industry rival Microsoft Corporation did not fair quite so well during the month of June. Although the American software company posted a 17.8 percent increase in sales compared to May, it only saw 219,800 units of the Xbox 360 leave store shelves.

The year of XXX is different from one perspective to others. Im quite curious about your definition of "Year of PS3". Is it about the number of console sold? Holiday title? exclusive title?
Based on the previous press conference, it seem Sony term of "The year of PS3" is not 100% depend on the number of sale



and I dont think shareholder want to axe PS brand. i mean, even they know PS3 is much more reliable then Vaio exploding batteries

Smart consumer buy things they can afford and feel no regret...if they think PS3 is affordable then they still smart consumer

On a serious note, increasing the HDD size instead of a price drop isn't a popular choice among many potential PS3 buyers. And Sony's optimism towards BD is backfiring them. Not to say BD isn't the future, but it certainly isn't gaining as much popularity they have hoped.

SONY has all odds against them. BD has won the format war, but cash is yet to show up in loads. They have crafted a powerful beast PS3, but losing too much money on each console sold. They portrayed to have the best "value" console on market, when cash-strapped consumers care for "cost" only.

The worst thing? They are fighting an resurgence Nintendo, and mighty Microsoft, with their own disarray & incompetent line of managers. SONY have great engineers, they need better Executives on top.

Out of all titles mentioned for PS3, I doubt any of them could provide a turnaround for PS3. They need GT5 to boost console sales

For starters, letting go Phil Harrison is a bad move for Sony. Sure, he did spillout some BS during conference but nevertheless he still the most convincing speakers in Sony at that time and the one who urge creativity
