I'm also one of Biomedical Science students. Anyone who wish to discuss anything, feel free to do so but please refrain from hurling abuses. We don't like that. smile.gif

Honestly, in the working world whatever degree you have in hand, you will earn about Rm 1500-Rm 2000 for starting pay. Unless you're a doctor of course. So, I don't see a reason of fighting and saying anything about how this degree is useless because the starting pay is low.

In reality, it's not about your degree, it's your attitude, communication skills, and contacts will get you further in life. This applies to ALL jobs available in the market. There is no point saying this degree is useless because the pay is low etc

For opinions that state that doing business will allow you to earn more money...

Again, It applies for everyone regardless of what degree you're holding. Doctors, too, earn more money when they start venturing in businesses (Do you not consider establishing a clinic a form of business?)

Yeah, it's true that close to 80% of job applicants ended up doing jobs that are none related to their degree.

However, example, you may end up doing sales but perhaps with a biomedical science degree it gives you a better chance to excel in your work if you're working for a lab technology company than those who only took business management for a degree?

The truth is, everything is somehow related and there is no way you can say which degree is useless.

It doesn't matter which degree you are holding but if your mind remains in a gutter, I doubt you will succeed in life. A degree can only get you this far in life and it's up to you and yourself to reach a greater heights. A degree is just a stepping stone for whatever you do.

Yeah, true. N  might get slightly more holidays compared to those who r working outside. lol

ABout that, not entirely true. Many lecturers in universities are immersed in the world of research and research is a never ending job. Most probably some of them even have to work longer than the daily 9 to 5 time period. Certain experiments require longer time to have their results observed smile.gif

yup i mean i agree lecturers are involved in research..this is a fact cuz without them how the master/phd students get supervised..but they r not the ones hands on doing the experiments hence no need to stay up late due to the research..

They do. Like previously mentioned, research is a never ending job. Sure, they might supervise postgraduate students but they themselves are also involved in other individual projects. This happens to most of the cases. Just because the scientist already managed to write one journal it doesn't mean that they will never continue with new projects.

LOL. Definitely. I hope this clears up the apparent misunderstanding due to shallow minded opinions

Emm, if im not mistaken, the final year of the biomed is almost 100% research work rite? Or was it the year while taking Honours? I really want to clear with all the details about biomed which i will be taking this coming Feb smile.gif

What do you mean by while taking honours? I thought the degree itself would be an honours programme?

About research work, yes it is done at the final year for my university that is. I'm not sure about other unis as different unis have different approaches although the degree itself is the same.

Just like how Biomedical Science degree of Monash is different than the one in IMU. From what I heard from my friend who used to study in Monash for a while before switching to IMU, the biomedical science degree in Monash emphasises more on tropical disease. I'm not 100% sure about this but it's better if you ask the management of the uni you are going to thoroughly. Sometimes, it can be quite tricky because different people in one management can tell you different stories so it's best you really have to clear your doubts to avoid regretting later biggrin.gif

Well for us, it's with lecturer.I think it is. Not too sure of that though. But we do have postings to laboratories from 4th sem onwards. So yeah, we work with both lecturers and lab technicians. biggrin.gif But then again, I'm not too sure bout the system in Monash.. sad.gif

anyway about the books, i think it's not really about what book you're studying but rather trying to understand the terms and what is the topic about. I usually look for my references online. tongue.gif

Let's make it simple. Biomedical Scientists can cross over to Biotechnology but I think Biotechnology graduates can't cross over to Biotechnology easily?

Biotechnology emphasises on creating new stuffs with the available knowledge(mostly medicine)

Biomedical science is more to studying alot of chemistries of the human body and using it to diagnose medical conditions. In terms of diversity, biomedical science can diverge to more fields including biotechnology as mentioned. They are mostly related to medical fields

Biotechnologists don't diagnose diseases. However, they learn alot about genetics because genetic defects are more towards the use of machines to find out the root of the problem.

Let's take the swine flu for an example.

Biomedical scientists' roles= Looking for the answers to WHY and HOW swine flu affects the human body.
If they are biomedical engineers, then they can create a new tool to detect the disease as well.

Biotechnologists: CREATE new cures for this viral disease or create new machinese to detect the virus efficiently.

Basically there isnt really any disticntion between those two because at the end of the day it really depends what SPECIFIC major you're venturing in future.
