There are some students that applied individually for their MARA sponsorship but most of the students here got their sponsorship along with the program offer letter.

If possible, you should see the Dean of IMS (Dato' Dr.Gani) or MSU president himself (Dato Dr.Syukri Yajid) and explain to them your interest in the IMS program.

You should also go to the MARA office in KL (basement floor) and inquire about the procedure to obtain sponsorship for the program, ask for the person in charge of handling MARA sponsorship for MSU-IMS. Do bring along all the relevant certificates/degree and if available, the offer letter for the MBBS program as well. They should be able to better explain this matter to you.

How many were interviewed by the Deputy Dean (Dr.Jamaludin) the day you went there? What did he ask of you?

Good that you've been accepted~

So far Biomedicine graduates were sent to India only (apart from Poland) for the medical program. You should inquire in detail as to which MBBS program (local or abroad) MSU is going to send you to.

The local MBBS program in MSU has a different program structure than the Indian MBBS program. The local program does not include the 1-year compulsory internship prior to graduation, only the Indian program has it.
(Local program 5-years straight, Indian program 4.5 years + 1 year compulsory internship)

As I mentioned before, if you are joining the MSU's Indian MBBS program as a graduate, you will spend 4.5 years INCLUDING the compulsory 1-year internship. I am not sure if this is done in the local MBBS program (different program structure than that of the Indian MBBS program).

Unless any changes are made in the near future, all I can say is that the shortest period you can get is 4.5 years (you will probably have to do 5-years for the local program).

Here is some info:

user posted image

http://www.msrmh.com/

However, it will cost RM100,000 less to do the program in Malaysia than in India.

You have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages yourself either to join the local or the Indian MBBS program if given the option to choose. Exposure/experience-wise - we got the upper-hand on this (as previously elaborated by me before).

If you are coming to Bangalore, here some interesting info:

As for MARA, you should try to get the offer letter earlier if possible and it should state which MBBS program you are offered. Bring this to MARA office for the appeal process. Both MARA and MSU staff handling the sponsorship matter should be informed, ask for MSU's assistance on this as they can help you better.

You mentioned that there were 30 students during the interview session, were they all Biomedicine graduates? Have any of your friends from UKM attended this interview?

I have just confirmed, and it's the local program i'm getting into. Apparently the India program is exclusively for MSU students, however they can help obtain a place for outsiders willing to enroll at their own expense/have already personally applied for scholarships. Whereas for the local program, MSU will be applying for MARA scholarship on our behalf in January (this is what Mr Marsal told me yesterday)

The duration for the local MBBS program is also 4.5 years, as we will be joining the current 2nd-year students on admission. There are around 30 of us Grad-Entry students (I have a feeling all of us who went for the interview were accepted). Only 2 are outsiders (me and a UPM graduate), the others are all Biomedicine graduates of MSU, so they probably know each other already (nervous!! sweat.gif )

To be honest, I personally am more keen towards the India program and its structure. Seems that this won't work out for me though. Tell me, how many of your fellow grad-entry colleagues are non-MSU graduates?

Thank you so much for all those useful inside information you've given me so far on Bangalore, but I guess I won't be needing it anymore sad.gif

You are most welcome to add anything that you deem relevant. Any testimonials from the local MBBS MSU students,perhaps..

Now I've just got to get my hands on the local MBBS program structure~

For ALL biomedical students here, I highly recommend a book that will deliver you from your confusion during your studies:

Medical Laboratory Science: Theory & Practice

Authors: Ochei J , Kolhatkar A

user posted image

- It contains all the subjects for MLT. Detailed explanation on the laboratory procedures.
- It covers : Hematology, Blood banking Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, Histology, Histopathology, etc
- Its very useful as a guide/reference for laboratory reports and assignment.
- Its a MUST for any biomedical science student.

I Quote:
QUOTE
Written in simple language, this book reflects the tremendous developments in the field of medical laboratory sciences in recent years.

The book is divided into six sections. Each section is further comprehensively divided into chapters covering introduction to the section, basic principles and procedures of various scientific experiments and diagnostic tests, clinical significance of tests and the reporting and interpretation of test results. Balanced presentation of mathematical and physical aspects;

Details the various new versions of reagent packaging; Each experiment ends with a sound clinical interpretation of test results - unique to the book ;

Emphasises the theoretical aspects of various tests ; Profusely illustrated with figures [515 figures including over 60 photographs] and tables to simplify and further render the topics discussed easily comprehensible ; Includes a chapter on 'Small Laboratory Animals' - unique to the book.

I have been using this book since 2004 and I highly recommend it, I am still using it now for my MBBS studies.

You can get it from MPH.

Graduate Entry Medical Program (4-years MD) to be offered by Perdana University next year in Malaysia, read the following:

QUOTE

New pathway for medicine

By KAREN CHAPMAN
educate@thestar.com.my

THE setting up of the Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine will provide opportunities for individuals who decide to opt for medicine after they have completed a different undergraduate degree or pathway.

Most students here who want to study medicine do so after completing the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), matriculation or its equivalent.

Johns Hopkins University Department of Medicine vice chair Prof Charles Wiener said some 17-year-old students might not have decided on becoming doctors after finishing secondary school, so the option of a four-year doctor of medicine (MD) programme to be offered at Perdana University would be an alternative.

Maybe I should consider doing pharmacy too ? But it is a year longer and expensive. I'm OK with study and the syllabus. Any advice from seniors ?

I wonder too... But for sure I'm not going into education line. Maybe get a job after graduate and earn some money first. After that, start a small business regarding of I've studied. So would it be better to take biotech as it has a larger scope and then take specialisation in entrepreneurship since my course offered it as a elective?
Or biomedical science is better ? I know a lot of people will laugh at me and think I think it's easy. But it just my dream and i believe that one day i can achieve it. Kinda regretted to take this bio related subject........... but OK la life has many possibilities.
*
You should try and be realistic about your future. Many that graduated with Biomedical or Biotech degrees couldn't get jobs related to their study (at least in this country).

A fraction of them had to pursue a higher degrees (Masters, PhD) to improve their marketability - some eventually become lecturers in IPTA/IPTS (if they are lucky).

If you have read my previous posts, you will come to know that Biomedical degree is not the same as Biotech degree.

Try and do this first - ask yourself, what do actually want to become? A businessman? A scientist? A lecturer?...

...then ask yourself again, do you have the necessary grades and financial backup to join whichever program that you aimed? Do you think you will be able to cope with the study? Do you aim to make tons of money?

The more I read through this thread, the more worried I become. I'm planning to do BMS at NUMed. Is it a bad idea? I really do want to go into research, but I have to think about the money as well. How different is biomedical engineering from biomedical science? Could I do a Master's in biomedical engineering with a degree in BMS? Or would I maybe do okay in biomedical if I'm a good student?
*
The work prospect for Biomedical graduates in Malaysia is not impressive as I mentioned previously in this thread, if you are interested in research, that is still possible here but don't expect to be paid a lot for it. (meager researcher's stipend from research grants)

Biomedical engineering is different from biomedical science, that course IS engineering - it focuses on creating medical devices, materials, implants, prosthesis that are biologically compatible with human use. Biomedical science program don't study or even do those things.

Only a few Universities offer that course - eg: University Malaya and UTM.

Here, compare for yourself... both courses are even under different faculties:

https://engine.um.edu.my/academics/bachelor...cal-engineering

Choose.

I didnt switch course... I studied till the end.

I am a holder of BSc.Biomedicine (Hons) and now doing MBBS in India. Some of my batch mates went to Poland for their MD.

To say that Biomedical graduates cant become doctors, is incorrect. Biomedical science subjects previously learned actually helps in MBBS/MD study (a LOT).

Hi sir, I really need your consultation about my course.
Recently I finisehd my Foundation in Life Science in UM and got cgpa with 4.0.
I even managed to attend interview session in Medicine at UKM, UniSza and UPM but unfortunately I failed all of them.
And based on my UPU result, i got offered for this Biomedical Science course in UM.

I really need your help, should I skip this course and wait for a year to reapply Medicine or should i go through this course?

I hope you can help me because i am still confused about this.

Thank you, sir!

First and foremost, congratulations on your excellent result.

I hold both BSc.Biomedical Science degree and MBBS. I will give my opinion on your dilemma.

BSc.Biomedical Science is not the same as MBBS, although they share similarities particularly during the first/second year of study.

MBBS is a professional course which can lead one into becoming a medical doctor unlike BSc.Biomedical Science.

BSc.Biomedical Science - are mostly pre-clinical subjects in MBBS. Although certain subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology are not taught indepth.

If you choose to proceed with BSc.Biomedical Science.... truth be told, job prospect is horrible in Malaysia. If you are lucky, you can become a science officer grade C41 in government service... otherwise... you will have to choose from jobs such as Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), Medical Underwriter, Sales person for Medical/Pharmaceutical companies in the private sector... pay wise... not so good...

back to your original question... if you are hell bent in becoming a medical doctor without wanting to waste a year re-applying for the course in IPTA... you can choose the private path... there are many IPTS offering Medical course in Malaysia -

I will first start with this - USM-KLE International Medical Program (Collaboration between USM and KLE Belgaum, India) - you will get USM Medical Degree with this -

http://www.usmkle.edu.in/
http://www.admissions.usm.my/index.php/und...rubatan-usm-kle

I suggest you inquire about this directly with USM via the link above.

... i will stop here for now. I will continue later. Do reply in this thread if you have further inquiries.

Thank you so much for the reply and your suggestions sir.

I want to ask some questions again and sorry if this disturbs you a lot.

If I pursue my study in this course, and I managed to get good result, will it be possible for me to pursue in Medicine degree in UM? Even if I apply through graduate entry in local, that means the competition is harder right?

And what if I pursue in IPTS, are there any scholarship for me?

I heard about Perdana University but I dont really know if they are still giving scholars for the Graduate Entry.

Thank you sir!
*
For the highlighted question... Unfortunately No.
IPTA medical programs don't allow graduate entry. (eg; using BSc. as entry into the medical program)... and there is no longer scholarship for Perdana University's graduate entry medical program...

There is... however... a chance for you to change course from Biomedical to Medicine during the course of your Biomedical study (usually after the first year of Biomedical program)...

This however rarely occurs, you will need to get insanely impressive results during the 1st year of Biomedical program and appeal to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine to be allowed to change course... If it is allowed, you will need to join 1st year medical program. (hence still lose 1 year)...

For your question on scholarship, this you will have to source it own your own. I am no longer keeping track of the latest scholarships available nowadays (if any) since such thing is no longer relevant to me... however here is a lead:

https://www.biasiswa.info/program-ijazah-dalam-negara-pidn/

Otherwise PTPN offers education loan for upto RM30000/year for medical program (RM150,000)... however... this is not enough... in Malaysia you will need at least RM300,000 (tuition fees only) for the entire duration of 5 years study...

https://www.ptptn.gov.my/images/fail/pinjam...kut_program.pdf

again... if you are hell bent on becoming a doctor... the most affordable*(non-IPTA) and Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) approved medical programs are available in our neighbor country... For the entire 5 years medical program - it will cost RM130,000 - RM150,000.... (waaaaay cheaper than studying in ANY IPTS in Malaysia)

thankiu for the reply! does this mean like other non-sci degrees such as communications graduates can even earn more or find a job...?

I don't know about communications degree but I can tell you that you are better off studying something else than Biomedical Science.

Hell, even becoming a fully qualified and trained teacher is better than Biomedical Science nowadays and I am saying this as a Biomedical graduate myself...

Even if you don't work in Government service as a school teacher - you can freelance your service as a private tutor or work in tuition centers/private schools... and if you do work as a teacher in government schools you can supplement your income by tutoring.... you will have a stable life.

See here: https://www.myprivatetutor.my/

If you are still keen on healthcare related field - try something different - such as Audiology or Speech Therapy, these occupations ARE in demand and there are so few graduates from these field. Go google/youtube these profession.
