I think Thierry Henry deserves a mention here. Because he did everything else amazingly well, his freekicks are often unnoticed and underrated. Any freekick within 25-30 yards he usually gets it on target, and half of those on target usually goes in. He scored quite a long range one against Man U in the Charity Shield also.

I remember Henry used to be the famous one to shoot right before the whistle has blown and keepers crying foul, frustrated and complaining that they needed to organize the wall. But no doubt about being on target there, he has got good technique

I'm a Liverpool fan but have to hand it to Beckham... one of the very few who's a real scoring threat whenever there's a freekick.

I'd like to add another thing about Mihajlovic. He's one of the few players who have scored directly from a corner kick.

The thing about players scoring from corner kick, i think its largely down to bad goalkeeping more than a super corner kick. Besides, there's a large element of luck involve, the flight of the ball, the goalkeeper screwing up and the defenders missing the ball. On the other hand, the corner kick taker should be aiming for the heads of his players, rather than kicking it too near to the goal and attempt to score from the corner kick.
Anyways, Mihajlovic is a great dead ball taker and for him to achieve this feat in a competetive scene, its special but i won't consider this to be a very special skills. |

If you think he belongs in the list, you're always welcomed to state your reasons why.

when talk about score goal via free kick, every player can score free kick, but to do it when the score is 0-0, 0-1 down or deep into injury time and the team is trailing 1-2, this the area where not many players can do it ... the confidence and mentality from the player need to be strong ...

QUOTE(Jonno @ Jan 16 2009, 01:13 PM) Said it before and will say it again, the best freekick taker I've ever had the privilege to watch was Tomas Hassler. For all you Beckhams, Del Pieros and what nots, no one ever come close to him, he takes them like penos, it's that easy for him. Check it out why...Tomas Hassler |

I'd go with Steven Gerrard. I choose him not because he's capable of curling the ball really well to the top corner etc, it's because of the different techniques that he uses when taking a free kick. He thinks smart, not just blast the ball wide.
Oh yea, I think James Milner deserves to be in the list as well. He's one hell of a freecick taker. So is Mortan Gaamst Pederson. |
