just make sure at APN setting there put 'disable' or 'nothing' or any other irrelevant words will do... another way is jailbreak your phone and download SBsetting from Cydia , it has toggle on or off the EDGE .. after done that , click on safari see it still connect to internet or not even 3G & WiFi are off . when i 1st bought the phone , maxis also charged me rm450+ for mobile internet data only.... the 'e' is just an indication to "inform" that you are currently connected to an edge speed network.

yea but it seems as tho i have only loaded max 3 pages using maxis network and my bill spike up RM180.
where is the APN settings? i've disabled 3g and data roaming since i got the phone. i used the maps quite often which requires the location services..does that contribute to my skyrocketing bill? by right shouldnt right.. like using normal car gps incurs no fees

yes it should.. by using location service means that u agree to be on open internet... since ure using maps... no wonder it skyrocketed... have u ever consider to get the unlimited data package? its cheap... around rm120 permonth with unlimited access..
try doing this... everytime u done with ur maps.. switch off ur location services...

@TS If u really want to remove that 'E' or 'O' or '3G', u can replace the UIimages with a blank ones or use winterboard just to turn it off (so u can turn it back on if u want to). But this is just to hide the icon, not to disable the service.

Just to ask a question ...
The E icon at the top left is just an indication that I am in an area that have Edge service or it means I am connected to it (which means it is charging me money).
Because i turn edge off in SB settings and I try access some web pages and it says I am not connected to the internet already ... but still the E symbol is still there.

No... not really ... did u read my post carefully ? i said even though you off the EDGE already the "E" logo sometimes will still show on top if it. you just simply put any wrong keywords in APN setting there , then maxis will not drain your money on EDGE. Not sometime ... it will always be there. Its just an indication thats you're in an EDGE covered area. If u want to make sure EDGE is disable, turn off WiFi and open safari. If u still can surf then EDGE/GPRS is still on.

QUOTE(irving @ Jan 4 2009, 09:23 PM) So my best bet now is just not to use internet outside my wifi range right? Anyway the APN there how to disable edge? From [GUIDE] Malaysia iPhone User Guide (MiPUG) QUOTE This is probably the most $$$ expensive problem most new iPhone users will encounter so it ranks #1 in this section. The EDGE connection is 'ON' by default on every iPhone. This will incur hefty charges to your phone bill if the connection is used by applications over long periods. If you actually want to use EDGE regularly though over 3G or Wi-Fi, you may want to look at signing up for unlimited data plans which you can ask your telco provider about.
Most of us don't use EDGE unless we need MMS functionality (Section 2: #??) so the fix is as follows.
a) For non jailbroken phones, enter any irrelevant text such as "nothing" or "disable" in the APN field (Settings> General> Network> Cellular Data Network> APN) to disable EDGE.
b) For jailbroken phones, you can download 'BossPrefs' or 'SBSettings' via Cydia and use those apps to disable EDGE. You can also use either of these apps to easily toggle On/Off for WiFi, SSH, 3G, etc.
Note that the EDGE (E) and GPRS (o) icons in the top-left corner of your iPhone screen will always be there whether or not EDGE is On/Off. So if you are feeling a bit antsy and just want to double check whether EDGE really is turned off, you can try loading a website in Safari or simply access your Weather application. Make sure 3G and Wi-Fi are also disabled. If an error message pops up saying there is no connection, you're safe. Another way you can try is to call your telco to disable your EDGE. I know Maxis can. I called maxis to unsubscribe the EDGE and after 2hrs+, the E logo disppear from the phone. This post has been edited by TripleH: Jan 4 2009, 09:40 PM

i checked my bill statement everyday. I dun think if the E, 3G or GPRS shows on our iphone will charge on the mobile internet access. Is just an indication tat these mobile internet service is able to be accessed. Using wifi on our iphone WONT charge to our bill. Then if do wat the hell is WIFI in iphone, blame Steve? U can *** the customer service centre if they claimed tat using wifi will also charge your phone bill. *** them kao kao.
For maxis user, diabling apn or setting watever username or password wont help. Just JB lo else subscribe rm5(1mb) or rm8(5mb)/month for mobile internet usage.
Thinking tat free apps is really free in iphone? Yes! is free to dl but might bring u Ads. Just beware lo. turn to flight mode before u go play ur apps if u dun wan to be charged. Else buy the apps then is Ads free.
Taking photo also will charge ur network. Very funny huh. Ya it does. 1kb=rm0.01 for 1 photo. try and see la.
Tot already close safari as i accidently tap on it. then when i checked my network data usage. BOOM 1.5mb received without my acknowledgment. the safari works in the background. 1.5mb=RM15 standard internet charge!
