and of cos u need friends in high places to get anywhere here.
no one in labels etc is going to listen to ur music no matter how good if no one recommends it.
i dunno how many a production house gets, but for a label u can forget sending it in unless u know someone.

u can play lots of gigs tho, where usually the crowd comprises of like 10 of each band members friends who all got in free + the local stray cat that decides to wander in, so basically everyone is playing to shiok sendiri only.

tho if u slowly build up, maybe u'll upgrade to playing shows for makciks and pakciks who dont understand ur music and will just clap along looking stupid when ur singing songs about mutilation.

even joining those reality shows gets ur nowhere.

so that shows that either everyone is downloading their stuff, or no one is buying them

if you write song, i mean, great songs, it's not hard to be famous.

if you sing cover, you have to be damn friggin good.

any successful artist or musicians are because of 1 simple thing - good music.

boyband is a no no...rock band is ok...write and compose an easy listening and catchy song...like indonesian band or music like muse...alternative also can...

i guess, u're not allowed to write good songs..but songs that are well received by the crowd, the public, people who will buy your CDs and not download them...mainstream stuff la, which may or may not be good music depending on taste...

if most of us were to sell an album that i like, that only my band mates think it's good, then it wont bring me far....maybe just among the local rock scene...

which big ass investor record label wanna invest in a band that doesn't sell , or at least have the potential to sell

that's why new artists and bands won't last long unless they have real talent.

i admit in malaysia (in fact, anywhere) talent is 2nd most important, but nobody can deny the principle of success in music. no artist can last long without good music, no matter how good looking he/she is.

even if you're not into mainstream music, you still have to deliver good quality music regardless of any genre.

i once bought a CD which is all electronic music. so i thought i support local non-mainstream musics a bit, but what the fcuk it's utter shits, very obvious it's produced by some kind of noobs who think put a bit of synth here and a bit of loops there using Reason then call it a finished product? although i paid only RM20 for more than 10 songs but shit doesn't worth a cent! RM10 i also don't want to buy!

look at the mainstream market.
easily 80% of the artists dont write their own stuff, they get by on image.
and if their music career fails, they can always become talkshow hosts for some stupid program

my god how you know? so they're scammer aren't they? i understand it's hard to market electronic musics in malaysia so they go around mamak stalls and sell it. i don't mind, well, it looks cheap but if the music is good why should i care how they market it?

by good music it's not neccesarily written by the artists. well regardless of who did it, in the end it's a business, and selling music. and of course i mean musics that accepted and loved by the crowd. If write music only you think is good then die loh, no need survive liao.

just like you see how many cafe and noodle stalls opened nowadays? they have beautiful interior design, but 70% of those stalls phailed because of food sux, 25% survived because acceptable quality but nothing special, and only the remaining 5% will be successful because of good food.

but music is not like food. if there's only 1 mamak stall in an area, if the food still can eat people will still go there. we need food everyday. when hungry and nothing to choose, white bread also sedap la. but we'll immediately change radio channel once heard a sucky song.

i know so far in mamak's that i go, especially in uptown, i have seen about 3 diffrerent acts behing pushed there.
who knows if those 3 are the same with different names and packaging, could be more.

thing with electronica music is that, most of them sound like its done by a 12-yr old kid whos managed to figure out how to use fruity loops.

there have been some decent local electronica music from at least 5-6yrs ago...nowadays not sure whats good out there with all the fruity loop warriors around.

because now computer software are so accessible, anyone also can be a producer, regardless of electronica or not. part of the reason why nowadays music so suck.

oh btw i bought this in cheras area (connaught if not wrong) quite some time ago...RM20 is not big sum but RM20 wei, i can eat 4 plates of delicious nasi lemak with big big ayam goreng...

estranged is popular bcoz the vocalist was from akademe fantasia

live show and studio recording is entirely different thing.

on the stage, some mistakes are not going to make much attention because you're enjoying the music show both using your ears AND your eyes, so the attentions are cut by half. but when you listen to CD, you're paying full attention to the music using your ears only that's why you hear different thing although it could be the exact same thing they did on the stage.

example- estrella. eventhou her songs are ncie(especially stay), but her face is like the cutest malay girl i ever seen in the media.

another one is enstranged, rock-pop malaysian boy group. damn the guy got talent and their songs rocks, but their muka also handsome.

Btw, I don't think the music scene here is THAT bad. Sure its bad but not as bad as most of you think la. Maybe you can't be as good to get a recording deal, but music ain't just about getting a recording deal and being famous mah. You could still score some gigs here and there, underground people will know you. And as long as I'm still enjoying playing music then i think i can live and die a happy life.
It was never about fame and fortune for me personally. I just want to do what i like. Of course if you so HAPPEN to be famous cause you're so good doing it, then its a bonus loh =D

Though i would agree, most malaysian music sense ain't that good lol

On a side note, Heres a local example i think is quite good. Just found out about it, By far probably the best malaysian hiphop i've heard

although his songs are old and consider "outdated" for youngster today. but he was the king of pop, at the very very least.

nowadays music hardly make such a great impact like he did EVEN until now. everybody was singing it, dancing it, his greatest hits are still copied, imitated, tributed, in songs, mv, movie. does he looks handsome? well yes, in a way, but definitely not for everyone. but what make him so great was his songs, and his artistic way of delivering his voice, and most importantly, his dance moves.

i cannot compose a song for nuts ...and to be successful , you need to be able to write good music..
that is why i play for several cover band ..

so yeah , don't keep concentrating on technique too much ..observe how people write music ..learn from them..

you can have bad technique , but with good music and be successful ..(look at Nirvana , Limp Bizkit ..)
but , no matter how GANAS your technique is , without a good music back your technique , you will still not make it lah..

however, not all are blacks wannabe. ok first of all i'm only fimilar with cina industry. for example:

Lee Hom - he's got something really interesting stuffs about hiphop. his hiphop musics are unique even a black can't imitate. his musics are really good despite they sound funny at first glance. but at least he didn't try to imitate a black. he's got his own style.

btw, never seen any all-chinese band success to get their name heard over radio/media with english songs eh? any band any1? even those famous local band i heard, all malay based.

must all-chinese band use mandarin/cantonese to be success in this music industry? and even to get tat, they hav to start from taiwan/hongkong/china 1st?

- only a handful of chinese listen to english song.

- those who listen to rock music, lagi less that listen to local music.

chinese band with english song = doom.

For me... i will definately get a mixed array of races to create my english media band... Just follow some of the footsteps of those successive local bands such as pop shuvit, love me butch and of course estranged...

the problem with chinese is that most chinese mother tongue is not english. unless they can really sing some mat salleh style if not how to success. to be honest, some chinese sing english songs damn funny...

and the first thing that hit the audiences is through radio. if you sing like a chinese, of course will turn people down loh...no need to look also know is chinese...

I partly agree with you bro. I used to concentrate on technique too much and found out it really don't matter much to most people you know?
What people want is easy listening stuff that soothes their ears. I dare say 90% of the people who listens to music probably don't know technical terms such as tapping or sweeping. As long as it sounds good to them, they'll listen anyways.

However, there are exceptional cases such as tommy emmanuel and Kotaro Oshio that have produced absolutely beautiful songs as well as too difficult techniques. Now THESE people are really something else... and they probably attract the other 10% of technical listeners such as musicians like you and me.

Once i've enlightened to this fact, now i am trying to produce originality and something that is simple and yet sounds good. And believe me, its a whole new world to explore...

I disagree totally. Maybe they aren't as famous on the radio, but bands such as Bus Company and the recent Free to Fall that won the songwriting competitions are an all-chinese based bands that sings english and they aren't looked down upon. In fact, i personally think they have alot of potential in this industry =D
The main problem i think is the media and the stereotyping of local listeners. I know cause i have been one that heavily despises local music as well. However, my perception has changed recently when i discovered that there are still hidden gems among us. Its just a pity they don't as much publicity because our local media doesn't support them enough...

first of all i understand they aren't professional actors, and the probably don't have to be if they knew how to play an instrument!!! @_@
i think the only person who actually looked right was the vocalist lol

the intro guitarist was picking nonsense(picking bass strings at treble notes)
the drummer was too stiff i think he was afraid to hit the drums...(VERY obvious)
the gurl guitarist was playing nonsense, she was even moving her fingers at bending parts... and moving at lower register(first few frets) at the higher solo parts..
i think the bassist was kind of faking as well, but he probably faked better than the rest
Thats about all the technical errors.


On to the video recording part
i think the lighting isn't very balanced at some scenes, noticed there are some over exposures. (unless it was done on purpose)
the camera isn't very still at some scenes too, shaking too much especially got one part it was trying to shoot up the tree (2.02-2.08)

and thats about it la...
Overall i think you guys did a fantastic job editing the video. I liked the transitions, was done very smoothly from one scene to another. and the environment was picked rather nicely.
But i have to say, although I don't expect professional quality MV, this probably doesn't even pass as an average video, imo feels like just something another amateur cooked up for youtube. Also, it shouldn't be called a remake. Remakes are usually officially done. This, being unofficial should be called a parody or fan-made.

I'm very sorry i am so harsh on you guys, i know i'm not your lecturer or anything but as a musician(and this IS a musicians forum) i just cannot ignore all the technical parts of playing an instrument. You, as a musician should also understand that.
Perhaps if you posted this elsewhere(in kopitiam or something) non-musicians wouldn't realise all these mistakes and will tell you, great job.

and the vocalist really does a good job in his acting, anyhow the introduction guitarist, even thou he doesnt know how to play the song, but he can really shake and pose with the guitar..lol.. i know, the hand is really fake...lol...he still new in guitar.
Actually, we had some issue with the cameraman .. the video will be worse if we didnt have another cameraman help us.

I agree that previously I thought that local music scene is beyond hope. But it's just the question of whether we choose to open our eyes and identify the potential in our society. The Arts is a baby industry in our country, which includes entertainment (i.e. music) and writing but I believe that we will progress much further, looking at the industrial trend now. Fyi, I mentioned writing because I'm a writer. People are beginning to open their eyes to our local entertainment scene.
