Hi,

I am interested in doing MBBS at Taylor's, just wondering any existing students could share with me their experience in Taylor's medical degree. How is the facility and lecturers. I went for their open day, seems like most of the lecturers there are from India.

I am particularly interested in the St George twinning as I want to go to London.

clevedon, you have 2A*3A in your A Levels, in which all 5 pursued after A2, or a mix with AS? What subjects are those 5?
*
A2, chem, physics, bio, maths and further maths.

I know i should apply direct but several personal issues prevent it. I want to go to a uni in London, and do not like the uncertainty in choosing a uni as in IMU.

Thanks! Apply direct is not easy esp for medicine in London. My friend with A*A*AA did not get a single offer last year.

I also have some personl reasons preventing me fr going to London for the next 2 years.

why london?.....

living cost is 50-100% more than smaller towns......

and the best uk med schools are not actually in london.....
*
Because can stay with relative, so accomodation and food is free/ subsidised.

not as simple as that, i can assure you.....london is a BIG city, and travel time from one end to the other end can take 2-3 hrs.......so if your relative lives far from the med school, you are looking a significant long and costly commute daily......

and while the asian way is often to expect free lodging and food, the normal practice there is you still have to pay for accommodation and food to your relative.....even between parents and children!......
*
It is actually my sister, she works there. My parent sponsored her studies, she sort of required to sponsor mine too by providing free lodging and food. I guess is the Asian way but she is the one who ask me to go to London. Her flat is actually not that far from St George, hence I am looking into Taylor's. Ideally, I would like to go to Edinburgh!

in which case, taylor's partnering with St. Georges is ideal, but there is no guarantee you will get to St. Georges, could very well end up in poland or Indonesia as well......

if she is renting, another caveat.....she may not continue to stay there, leases expires, landlords raise rents, wants place back, people change jobs and move nearer to where job is etc........
*
I thought once you are accepted during the interview by St George, and provided you don't fail any exams, you are guaranteed a place to St George.

What is bothering me now is nobody seems to be going to St George from Taylor's, I am a bit concern about the standard of teaching in Taylor's.

i don't know how taylor's is doing it, but if based on the same system as imu, no, you are NOT tied to any pms at entry......you are however guaranteed a place if you pass all exams, but the final matching will decide where you eventually go.....

taylors may do it differently, as the only pms worth going to is st. georges, but since st. georges insist on a clear restriction that only people with 3a's at a-levels (or equivalent) can match to them, that automatically disqualify many students (in imu, that would effectively disqualify more than 1/2)..........

what is worrying is, if you browse their website, much of the information about the twinning programmes have been removed, as is the indonesian partner.....there is mention of the czech partner with no details.....it's 4 years after taylors, so i don't think anyone is ever going to want to go there....st. georges wants aaab, not sure why they want 4 subjects, but they only want aussie atar90......no mention about stpm........

i would go sit down with them and get the REAL facts before deciding.........it looks like their pms programme is failing apart......they have only ONE pms people may be interested in....

I went there recently and talked to the counselor, seems nobody has gone to St Georges yet. Applying via Taylor's to St George's needs 3A1B whereas via IMU is only BBB.

Added on July 9, 2011, 10:28 pmThe counselor told me that if I am accepted during interview by St George's, I will get a place to transfer to London provided I pass all exams during the two years.

I hope I am not misled!

that is not correct.......

while bbb is the stated minimum qualification for entry, most intakes have cut off's at aab/atar94 or thereabouts......and they really decide based on the phase 1 performance, not pre-u.....

Sorry, my bad!

nobody has gone from taylors, i think because they have only taken the first batch 2 years ago, so the first group may be joining year 3 in st. georges in september..........but surely these info should have been made known by the 'counsellors' (aka saleperson) there?...........

When I was there, the first counselor told me there were few heading to St Georges, then later another counselor told me that nobody in the previous batches of MBBS students are heading there, nobody has chosen to go there. I am actually a bit worried. But Taylor's has been around for a long time, its reputation has been good. I hope I am right.

Added on July 9, 2011, 10:32 pmi should add, even their local programme is fraught with a lack of information.....where on earth is their clinical training hospitals?..........and their academic staffs......the list on the website is pathetic.....
*

Its clinicall hospital is Sungai Buluh Hospital. Their academic staff are mainly from India.

yeah why not apply straight to st george?
*
May be I will do that, apply first, if I get it then I might defer for one year. Due to some personal reasons, I can't go to UK for at least the next 1 year.

But I am also concern whether I can get in if I apply direct as UK medicine is not easy to get in direct, UKCAT, PS, interview . As mentioned earlier, someone I know did not get any single offer from UK for medicine despite getting A*A*AA.

I will possibly try IMU if I need be.
