Guys...
If you have been to Surabaya...lets share some info in here.
What are the activities can be done there/food and so on.
By the way, is it easy to get to Bali from here?

I did surabaya some months ago. Nothing significant to see in the city itself, the attractions are mostly outside the city. Mt Bromo is one of them but I didn't get to go since there were kids around. Stayed at Sheraton, negotiated with some drivers to take us around, show us the sights, shopping and food.
Good trip but I guess nothing special to make me want to go again. |

Hi,
Going to Surabaya next week for 5days. Just wonder whether it's easy to book trip and arrange stuff after I arrive Surabaya? Plan to spend 2-3 days at Mt Bromo area do some hiking and trekking. My experience from Bandung and Yogyakarta tell me that things is cheaper if I arrange on-site rather than do on-line. Any idea? |

Hi
I have to take a Laptop along with its accessories and a medium size speaker with sub woofer plus some kitchen electronics appliances like rice cooker, toaster and mixer (all for personal use, but some of them are new) for a friend in Indonesia. I am travelling there to Surabaya airport. My concern is, are all these stuff allowed in the airport? especially the speaker. I seriously don't want to run into trouble with Indonesian costumes. Do I have to pay fines or taxes? I am ok with that as long as they don't permanently cease these stuff. If anyone of you is from Surabaya or has traveled there before and has experience on these things please advice me what to do? Thanks. This post has been edited by farzan: Jan 4 2011, 10:45 AM |

bought a flight ticket to surabaya on 14th january next year,
was actually planning to go to jogja, but heard about mount bromo so thought maybe it would be great to go there. so the plan is for surabaya to be a transit point from-to kl, but will visit mt bromo on the last day in indonesia, havent did thorough research yet, but just need to ask few things first. my flight will reach surabaya about 1am in the morning, will there be buses to jogja at that hour? how to get to the nearest bus station? how long is the travel from surabaya-jogja? about mt bromo, is there any fee to hike/climb it? accessible throughout the day? |

I'll answer the second question first. the distance from the juanda airport to the bus station (purabaya/bungurasih) is quite far. if you come in the morning until evening. You can take the airport bus (DAMRI) to get to the bus station. but since you arrived at 1 am. you can't take the airport bus. because the airport bus operating hours are from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm. maybe if you want to go direct to the bus station at 1 am you can use the taxi. for the first question, surabaya jogja bus operates 24 hours a day and departs once in an hour. and the bus departs from bus station bungurasih. The best buses for this route is the "EKA" that depart from the line number one of bungurasih bus station. eka bus fare from Surabaya to Jogja approximately 70k rupiah. You just go up. and pay the fare on the bus. You don't have to buy tickets in advance. Another option is to use the train. from the juanda Airport, take a taxi to the Gubeng railway station . There are several train options, but the most morning is sancaka which departs at 7 am from the Gubeng station. and the fare for the executive class is approximately 150k rupiah. driving from Surabaya to Jogja will take approximately 7 hours. sorry, I can't answer your question about Mount Bromo. because I have never been there and don't know clearly about Mount Bromo. |

Thanks! that was such a relieve and real big help,
approximately, how much will be the cost for taxi from airport to bus station bungurasih? so travel by bus, will be around 7-8hours journey too right? how about train? i read on wiki it will take longer like 12-13 hours journey. bungurasih bus station, is there any eateries around that open at that hour? cause i expect airport foods to be more expensive so maybe get some late supper in the bus station area instead. surabaya jogja bus operates 24 hours, this goes the same to jogja to surabaya also right? just to be confirm, |

I'm glad to help you. 2. approximately, how much will be the cost for taxi from airport to bus station bungurasih? 3. so travel by bus, will be around 7-8hours journey too right? 4. how about train? i read on wiki it will take longer like 12-13 hours journey. 5.(A).bungurasih bus station, is there any eateries around that open at that hour? (B) cause i expect airport foods to be more expensive so maybe get some late supper in the bus station area instead. 6. surabaya jogja bus operates 24 hours, this goes the same to jogja to surabaya also right? just to be confirm, 2. The cost of taxi is approximately 50k until 60k rupiah. 3. yes of course. But if you take the "EKA" bus that i recommend you before. The bus will stop at a restaurant to provide meals that free of charge (the cost of the meal is included with the bus fare). 4. Nope, it won't be that long. Surabaya Jogja train is approximately take 5-6 hours. 5. (A) I'm not sure about it. Because I've never been to the bungurasih bus station after midnight. (B) Unfortunately, your expectation is true. The cost of meal in the airport is 3 times more expensive than at the bus station. (Approximately) 6. yes it is. this is the schedule of the bus eka. Depart From Surabaya. (Jurusan : Destination) ![]() You can take the magelang-destination bus to go to jogja. Because the bus that go to magelang is always pass through jogja. Unfortunately, i don't have the schedule of bus departure from the jogja bus station(Giwangan). But i think it operates 24 hours too. Important : I'm not an employee of the bus eka, or any part of them. But, If you decide to take the bus. I really recommend you to take the "EKA" bus. Because based on my experience for this route. no bus companies that provide a better service than eka. on the other bus, the distance between the bench is so tight and there is'nt meal service. JUST FEEL FREE TO ASK. As far as I know the answer to your question. I'll try to answer it |

Bus to Yogya from Surabaya is around 8 hrs. I took a night bus, departing from around 6-7pm, where it stopped at somewhere between East and Central Java for a free latenite Nasi Padang supper, and continued the journey to Yogya where we arrived at the ungodly hour of 2-3am.

BTW, I assume it's from West to East Guess I'll just ask the local carrier booth at the airport during my arrival. But would really appreciate any feedback from the Bros here who already tried and test the carrier for data. Will definitely need the most stable data speed with 2-3GB capacity at least during my stay... |

Yeah, I did the same thing too with several friends. It was awesome. You wont get this kind of experience in Malaysia
QUOTE(caerulln @ Dec 22 2008, 10:34 AM) yeah about right. everything but bromo is rather bland. go to bromo. Find Bromo Sunrise Tour. During my faculty conference there, it is the best activity i had there. I want & will go there again soon you'll go there by bus in midnight. few hours journey. Then change to a van due to smaller & more dangerous roads. Then change again to a jeep. kinda like a scrambler jeep. Reach the top in time for sunrise. They drive like mad. Makes u fear for your life looking at the steep cliffs inches away from the u The air is a bit cold there. So if u can't stand it, rent a thick sweater there. Few bucks only. After sunrise, go down with the same jeep to a place to ride horses. A lot of horses. like 400 there all owned by the native there. They'll take u for a ride to the top of a volcano. In short, the experience is quite interesting. We don't have that kind of stuff i Malaysia. |

being to indonesia java for trips...never realise that some much thing to see in indonsia i) borobodor; ii) prambanan; iii) ijen crater - blue lava crater but make sure u bring alone the touch light and safety mask in case they didn't provide; iv) mount bromo - view the sunrise. unfortunately it is over crowded v) mount merapi; vi) dieng - colour lake is the best; vii) panandaran beach - visit the green canyon is the must. thing i don't like is the indonesia city and transport in indo. too many motorbike, driver drove quite relentless and roads were very disorganised. |

QUOTE(kyenli @ Nov 12 2014, 10:53 AM) You can ask your hotel to arrange for group tour. And, if you can get people to share the cost, hire a 4x4 to visit the nearby villages. I didn't manage to do that Oh yes, if time permitting, visit Kawah Ijen too. Give Surabaya city a pass unless you are interested in cigarette factory. |

QUOTE(lucaswjk @ Mar 17 2015, 10:07 AM) My own itinerary was:D1: arriving in Surabaya, spent the night at city center (near the not-so-Chinese China Town) D2: take cab to bus station; take bus to Probolinggo, then take mini bus to a small town near Bromo D3: Bromo sunrise tour; after that depart for Ijen Crater D4: visiting Ijen Crater in the morning, then return to Probolinggo D5: take bus to Malang D6: return to Surabaya Airport; depart for Malaysia On retrospect, I found Surabaya to be disappointing. I suggest that you go straight to Probolinggo and spend your first night there. Catch a mini bus to Bromo the next morning. If you hire driver, you may head to Bromo on the first day. Note that I joined a group tour to Ijen Crater. I asked the hotel front desk to arrange for it. My 3rd day was particularly hectic, as I rushed to Ijen Crater after the Bromo sunrise tour (also arranged by the hotel), with just 1 hour for shower and breakfast. If you have extra time, spend another day in Bromo and visit nearby villages. You'll need a 4x4 for that. Malang was a place to savor Javanese food as well as for shopping. I haven't been to Madakaripura waterfall, so I can't commend on this. |

You need to ride bus from Surabaya to Bondowoso, then a minibus bus from bondowoso to sempol, service only runs until 11am or so. Judging from your arrival time, you will not make it as the bus journey from surabaya to bondowoso takes roughly 4 hours. Heard Ijen crater is closed since feb... not sure when will reopen Staying in probolinggo for bromo is a waste of time. Take the bus from probolinggo to cemero lawang, the nearest village to bromo. From there, you can visit bromo and also take a jeep to tumpang and malang onwards. Hope this helps. |

Is there any reason you must go to Ijen before Bromo? In my case, I went to Bromo first, and from there booked a trip to Ijen. If you insist on going to Ijen first, you can book a trip at the bus station of Probolinggo. gaerie84 mentions that it is a waste of time to stay in Probolinggo. Indeed it is a boring town (though I had a yummy ayam penyet there). But it is a convenient transit point. If you can't get to the places of interest before sunset, you may spend a night there. As for Surabaya, the only reason to go there is the cigarette factory I took some pictures in Surabaya and Malang. See if you like them... https://www.flickr.com/photos/kamera-otoko/...57625284306316/ Note that orang Tionghua of Surabaya have largely moved out of the Chinatown. I guess the same thing is happening to KL's Chinatown aka Jalan Petaling This post has been edited by river.sand: Mar 17 2015, 02:06 PM |

wondering is it safe to go and explore Surabaya, Bromo and some other places nearby for single female traveler? This will be my 1st time traveling alone to Indonesia. I heard the public transport there (Surabaya) is not bad but don't know how reliable they are. And the local as well.

Just know that once u touchdown in surabaya, u can book a tour to bromo complete with accommodation for about 1 million rupiahs If u want to DIY, u can take a bus to probolinggo, then from there, u can take a minibus down to cemero lawang. From cemero lawang, you can buy tours of gunung penanjakan + bromo. There's a entrance fee of 217,000 rupiahs to pay when u enter bromo (I think it's 317,000 rupiahs on weekends). For side trips, can consider bromo savannah or/and madakaripura waterfall. From cemero lawang, you can take bus back to probolinggo, then take another bus from there to bondowoso. From here, you can get midnight tours to ijen. If u want to DIY, ride the minibus from Bondowoso to Sempol, and from there u can get on an ojek to take u to pos paltuding, where u can begin ur ascent to ijen crater. After sunrise, u can retrace ur steps back to Bondowoso > Probolinggo > Surabaya. |

QUOTE(nscid @ Mar 25 2015, 05:37 PM) I just want to know how's their public transport. The bus from probolinngo to cemero lawang and to Bromo. The route to Bromo without tour & all info are clearly stated in the given blog (thank you). Only the public transport part. For buses from Probolinggo to Cemero Lawang, read here...http://2point8.blogspot.com/2010/11/java-trip-iii.html (note: info may not be up-to-date) AFAIK, there is no public transport from Cemero Lawang to Bromo. You need to join a tour or hire a driver. |

Up to you. You can take the night train to Surabaya if u want to save on accommodation. But that morning when u arrive at Surabaya, you need to get to bus station to get the bus to Probolinggo. From Probolinggo bus station, u can take the minibus to Cemero Lawang.Cemero Lawang itself nothing much to do, though u can hire an ojek to bring u around to see bromo savanna, sea of sand or even visit bromo crater in the afternoons. Hi guys, I will be travelling to Surabaya soon with few of my friends middle of next year. We planned to hike Mount Semeru there (currently I'm contacting one of the guide to quote for price) and then we plan to go Mount Bromo/Penanjakan and Mount Ijen unguided. Just want to ask:
1. Is it possible to go Bromo/Penanjakan and Ijen unguided? I see that Bromo/Penanjakan trails are quite easy and hence not much problem. What about Ijen? Because we plan to go midnight for the blue flame and not sure if it is safe for us to go by ourselves. Also, should we bring masks or something to go to Ijen because I read from few blogs stating the high sulphur smell there. 2. What is the cheapest flight from Kuala Lumupr to Surabaya? Right now i check AirAsia seems quite expensive..maybe I should just wait for the usual AirAsia's promo/freeseat.. 3. How far is it from Semeru -> Bromo -> Ijen? I'm contacting the guide right now about dropping us at Cemoro Lawang right we completed Semeru. Thanks. |

hi! last post was 2018,
no one going surabaya since then? planning to go there in a few months. the bromo, ijen, waterfall trip, is too extreme for old people and small child? we experienced timang beach & merapi before at jogja, is it about the same or much more challenging? thanks! |

QUOTE(hafizhans @ Jun 23 2022, 10:56 AM) hi! last post was 2018, Yup...seem like no one been there lately...hahano one going surabaya since then? planning to go there in a few months. the bromo, ijen, waterfall trip, is too extreme for old people and small child? we experienced timang beach & merapi before at jogja, is it about the same or much more challenging? thanks! Maybe due to pandemic, travelling has been hampered. Bromo, as i recall....you don't have to walk up the hill. They do have jeep transport to go up. (my info is based on many years ago) Others who was there recently can chip in some info. |

Does anyone have recommendations for Mt Bromo tour, preferably from Surabaya? Not sure if those on Klook are reliable and fairly priced. Thanks!
