Hi all, would like your help to recommend me a new headphone.

Currently I'm using Steelseries Siberia V2 headset.
It is good and all, but I find the earcups a little too small for my ears. After less than an hour of use, the top of my ears starts to hurt from the headset pressing down on it.

So can any sifu recommend me another headphone with a larger earcups?
Thank you!

My usage:
- Purely for gaming and movies (no music)
- Mic is optional
- Budget RM 500
- I'm no audiophile, so I'm willing to sacrifice audio quality abit for better comfort  tongue.gif
*
The AKG K612 Pro can be had for RM560 now on Amazon, plus shipping and possible tax should bring you to around RM700 or so.
So yeah, if you can push your budget up to RM700 then the K612 is all you'll ever need for a very, very long time. It's the most sensible upgrade to a Siberia V2 I can think about.

If your budget is stritcly RM500, the Sennheiser HD558 is another sensible upgrade. Only RM380 on Amazon now, including shipping should be no more than RM500.

Can any help recommend me a gaming headphone please? Currently looking at the Logitech G930 but want to know what other potential options there are.

They should be:
Wireless
USB
MIC - yes
budget about RM500-600
Appreciate comfort where possible over sound quality.

Thanks! smile.gif

Haha Im supposed to burn them in but theyve been on my head every waking (and sleeping) moment for past 2 days..
So comfortable you dont notice it on your head after a while and even running out of a puny Xonar U3 from my laptop still is the best headphone ive ever heard..Jumping from Roccat Kave to this is mind blowing..some songs keep giving me goosebumps  cool.gif

Once I get the amp and this baby is burned in I wonder how it will sound..
*
I'll give you a spoiler, it's like the first time you had... you-know-what. brows.gif

Now in all seriousness, the HD800 are sounstage monsters. Put this on with a properly mixed FPS and then with a little bit of practise, I guarantee you that you will be in the top of the leaderboard most of the time.
Otherwise for immersiveness, I bloody love the HD800 for what it is capable with (TH-900 takes the cake on the best presentation of bass in headphones I've ever heard).

Now just don't get stucked up in buying $200 custom cables to replace the ones on the HD800, that'd just be a waste of money.

Haha i've always wondered why people willing to spend money for a good pair..audio bliss is real after all..im planning to stop with the amp and sound blaster zxr for the dsp, no cable hehe..a dac with optical in does sound tempting though  tongue.gif

Honestly, the only reason i chose hd800 is for the soundstage..i play alot of battlefield 4 and planning to get titanfall once my pc arrive..

This setup+triple Dell U2414H..a lifelong dream finally achieved  thumbup.gif

Wait hold on!

You're gonna do line-out from ZxR > Precision 2 > HD800?
There's a problem here.

The headphone line-out on the ZxR (as well as the entire Z series) has high distortion and channel imbalance, something the RCA line-out does not. However at the same time the ZxR's headphone line out is the one you want to use for SBX as the algorithms for that is different to the SBX afixed to the RCA line out.

You'd want to go optical out from the ZxR (in which case you should just save RM400 and get a Z instead) to an external DAC with optical input then to Precision 2.

I got the zxr used for cheap so its fine.. I didnt know the RCA is different from the built in headphone line-out though, thanks for the heads up! notworthy.gif
Guess it gives me a perfectly good excuse to get that DAC  tongue.gif
Hmm whats a good one for around 1.5k?
Im currently eyeing the NFB2 from audio gd but not sure about the optical input but they do custom specs..
*
I honestly don't think you'd need the NFB2. I've gone through over 11 DACs of different origins over the last year and honestly, DACs are very, very difficult to pick apart.
Some DACs cater to a warmer sig, some DACs cater to the neutral and some are just cold and analytical. But the thing is, all of them sounds good. A good DAC is a good DAC, end of story.

I always felt that DACs has been overpriced for whatever reasons.

Never heard the NFB2 but I have heard the same ES9018 DAC it has on the NFB11.32 and really, I doubt the difference would be anything significant. At least not worth the extra $200.
It's like the Schiit Modi vs Bifrost, I saw no reason for the Bifrost at all as the Modi sounds 99% like the Bifrost. Not even exaggerating, but that's how it is.

QUOTE(Sentinel92 @ Apr 23 2014, 08:47 PM)
Eh? Serious? How about the Creative X-Fi Titanium Professional? I got it second hand but haven't had the chance to test it out yet. Rig still getting modded. I got this one:
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/Sound...Audio-PCIe.aspx

Btw bl@ze, you got the ZXR of some Sarawak seller right? That's the only ZXR I could think of being sold cheap. Hahaha. But on the DAC, get the Loki. The Gungnir is above your budget.
*
That Titanium Pro doesn't have a headphone out. I've never tested it, but if it's similar to the Titanium HD, that means THX TruStudio is available equally on all channels.
Otherwise worse come to worse, just optical out to Bifrost you've been eyeing (that means no Loki for you! tongue.gif).

just an update for those looking for a for gaming headset..

after i got my beyerdynamic COP... i need a second pair of headphone for travelling/mobile/office usage... since my COP is well rested at home...

so... after learning by advices, by review and own experience that audiophile headphone is the best.... i made kinda mistake for falling for gaming brand again... i bought a TurtleBeach M Seven headphone from ebay... actually eyeing for the Captain America Limited edition.. but it is hard to get it... so i settle for the M Seven... which is... the best TurtleBeach can offer.. (and great ebay/amazon review) i mean the latest (last year?) SEVEN line up.. it is the same headphone with XP,X,M Seven.. just the mixer defines it will fall into what category... and the add on mic...mine come with braided cable and a mic/pickup call button an the breakway cable..

here is what i think where i made the mistake... with the Turtlebeach M Seven
1. bloated bass.... bloated bass everywhere...
2. clamping force too hard.. not good with a big head..
3. earcup is smaller than the COP.. thinking to change to fabric earpad like the marvel limited edition..
4. kinda heavier than the COP..

now days i farm diablo 3 while listening to spotify a lot (all kind of music) ... with the TB M7... my ears hurt... from the crushing bass...

solution:
1. having another profile in my sound setting just to flatten the bass with the TB M7..
2. putting the headphone on a stand that loosen the headband..
3. sell it at garage sale...
so,

anybody is looking for a TB M7 headphone... thats the point to give a consideration..

peace..
*
So.. what happened to your COP?

QUOTE(Sentinel92 @ Apr 23 2014, 10:48 PM)
Well, I wanted that ZXR too. But decided to pull out. Oh well.

Hahahahaha, judging by your mining stuff your budget is of course quite flexible. But yeah like Ben said, all you need is a nice simple DAC. Loki will do fine.
There is a headphone out.  rclxub.gif
Hahahaha, its the second from left output.

Guess for Loki I have to bypass my sound card and use the USB 3.0. Sound card will be relegated to powering speakers I guess. But we will see how. Bifrost seems a bit like a cold dark place which you can never escape for my wallet now. Hahaha. I'd rather focus on getting a better amp.
*
That headphone out is coupled with the stereo out, that means that channel has an output impedance of over 100ohms. Do you want your headphones going into that? laugh.gif
It doesn't have a dedicated headphone out.

My suggestion, get the Modi with optical input + a good amp. End game, for a very long time... until I poison you again with something else. icon_idea.gif

My current one is a HD558, but I've reached a point where I need an upgrade. It's two years old already, and I've been poisoned enough to notice I'm not satisfied anymore. The Mic stays, gonna use it as a seperate piece. Just wanna upgrade my cans.

As for what I have in mind, either the MrSpeaker Alpha Dog, or I go for broke and get the JVC DX2000. But that's abit insane on my part. Probably gonna settle on the Alpha Dog , since reviews pretty say it stacks up against the TH900 at 1/3 the price.

You did sta yoI've tried the TH900. What was your impressions?
*
TH900? Probably the best closed-headphones that I've ever heard. That bass, seriously that bass!! It's just on another level of immersiveness. So clean, tactile and textured, so much impact, so deep and just really, it envelopes well mixed audio in the best possible way you can dream of. Obviously being a closed headphone means that the mids will suffer a bit and even the TH900 cannot escape that, the lack of dynamics from not being open does show its weakness here. Some owners say they do hear a bit of distortion on the mids, I don't. The distortion is there on freq. graphs though, but I don't hear it.

However, by no means the TH900 sounds weak at all. There are still plenty of detail in the mids, it's not up-forward in your face to cause fatigue but it isn't drowned out by that empowering sweet bass it has. Just don't expect the chilling mids you'll find on a HD800 or even a HD650. Imaging on the TH900 is impressive for a closed headphone,

Haven't had the chance to hear the Alpha Dogs yet but yeah, I've read many who has both says it's very close to one another. But alternatively, Fostex's lower-end TH600 which sells for about the same price as the Alpha Dogs sounds really close to the TH900 too. And I also know there are some who innitially bought a JVC DX2000 and just switched for the cheaper TH600 just because there's no point in having the DX2000.

The TH600 are basically re-badged Denon D7000 (oh and THAT has some of the best presentation of bass out ther too) with just slightly wider soundstage and more refined mids. The differences are very slight though and it could just be down to the different earcup matterials.

The only reason why I even considered the DX2000 was because to me (please note the only place I've tried headsets is either at work, Jaben or at a friends place) It has THE best bass I've ever heard. Low, controlled, layered and full of impact. Wipes the HD700 and T5P or anything else I've tried on the floor with it. But it also does so without bloating and causing it to it to overpower the mids.

Here is where I agree on the shortfalls of close headsets. The mids aren't as nice as that of open back like the T5P or HD650/700. It does have nice smooth rolled treble. Non of that ear piercing sparkling which I hate.

Which is my conundrum because unlike you I haven't tested the Fostex TH600 or 900 or the Denon D7000. Maybe I should try the D7000 and see if it holds up. Definitely won't be getting the TH900 though. Waaaaay outta budget.

Yup, that's why I said for the DX2000 I was just plain suicidal. Probably settle for something cheaper but just as good.

Thanks for the review. Will take a look at the TH600/D7000 (which I heard is discontinued so D7100). Btw the Alpha dog is cheaper shipped. Around RM2.5K tops. So if the Denon sounds good enough I'll take the Alpha Dog.
*
The D7100 has a different driver and different build to the D7000, they don't sound similar. Ever since Fostex stopped making headphones for Denon, their headphones has been sort of very controversial.

One review of the D7100 said that it only started sounding nice after over 2000 hours of burn-in..... doh.gif
Yeah, right. 2000 hours later, the person had better justified the purchase or he'd be looking stupid in the mirror.

I wouldn't take the D7100 as reference to the TH600 because they would be even more disimilar to each other.

I think the Mad Dogs is quite a safe choice though, wouldn't feel bad about picking it up at all.

Eeeer, then where am I gonna try the D7000 when it's discontinued? cry.gif

Wow. 2000 hours. Even if I listen to it for six hours a day it'll almost take a year. Which is stupid. Guess i can forget that one.

Hmmm, I'll see what I can do. But most probably I'll end up with the Alpha Dogs. Unless I feel it still feels inferior to the DX2000.

Thanks so much for the feedback mate.
*
Cool. Let me know how the Alpha Dogs sound if you decide to get it.

Right now I'm pretty much at an end-game with Fidelio X1 + Vmoda BoomPro setup for gaming.
Then I'm on the Annies for music (though I do take the Annies for competitive gaming over the X1). It's a humble setup but I don't think I wanna jump back into high-end gear anytime soon eventhough I do miss the TH900.

Owned siberia v1, 3 siberias v2 before
Now using corsair vengeance 1500
Notice that the corsair quality is so much better and much more grippier.
Not really good experiences with the siberias but no doubt they are very comfortable to wear.
Just that the hinges are not strong and the tend to get loose after a while.

Not surprised.

Majority of gaming headsets has poor built quality for a reason — the bulk of the money goes into advertising and sponsorship, not into manufacturing the product.

Probably in a couple of months. Gotta finish up my exams first. Will let you know how it goes. Heck, we can even meet up and try headsets. Lol.

Hahah, maybe in five years time I'll probably get a TH900 with a Grace Design m920 and I'm done and dusted. And maybe sneak in an Audez. But the X1 is solid bang for buck choice. Never tried vModa before though.

+1. The Razers/Steelseries stuff are all overhyped crap.
*
Oh man the price on the Alpha Dogs, it's tempting. I'm thinking about it..... ph34r.gif

Maybe Fostex will come up with a successor to the TH900 at that time, which by then the TH900 go cheaper (heh it's nice to dream, won't happen). Speaking of Audeze, gonna try and get a test on the LCD-X soon. All the hype and review over it, I'm excited yet skeptical at the same time.

The X1 was $150 on Amazon in January... one hundred and fifty bucks! It was only for a day, but that deal just made the X1 the BEST deal you can ever get on a headphone in history. It's one of the most exemplary bass you can get on an open-canned headphone, perhaps the most immersive even, short of planars that is. Madness though, I bought mine at $300.

The Vmoda boompro is just a mic - http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Gamin...e/dp/B00BJ17WKK
Because the X1 has removable cable, using this mic basically means one thing: why do gaming headsets still exist? Furthermore the X1 doesn't need much amping, so people who says "oh but you get a mid-fi headphone and that would mean you need to spend money on the amp", well no you don't with the X1.

People who got the $150 deal on the X1 + Vmoda boompro is pretty much set for life, as far as gaming goes.

*EDIT*
Holy balls! The X1 is $185 on Amazon with this code - TCH20ARC
You will NOT find a better headphone at $185, guaranteed. Not even the K612 Pro, nope.

Been reading alot, and unfortunately I found out Hifiman is also very very nicely priced in Malaysia. With the exception of the HE-6 the rest of the series is pretty nicely priced. The 500 does go head to head with the Alpha Dog. Performance wise, Alpha. Price wise locally HE500 wins.

Probably need to try the HE-5LE and see how. Sigh. Decisions decisions.

Heh, by then the 900 would probably be retired. Audez LD X2 maybe? thumbup.gif

Nice deal on the X1. But meh. Not for me. Haha.
*
Never liked the 500, that jarring treble at the top end like the HE-400... ugh.

Maybe the HE-560 will fix that and I hope so. That's another one on my radar.
The one thing that's never been nice with Hifiman for me is the comfort, the weight technically. Their headphones are HEAVY and from the HE-400/500 that I've tried before and very nearly kept it, as much as I love the bass on them, I couldn't keep them on for more than an hour before neck sore.

I gave it time, really. After 3 weeks of wearing it almost everyday, I still get neck sore. So.... sad.gif

Tanya E1 - AKG. But you can always choose the cheaper shipping options like USPS instead of FedEx.

From my experience, don't ever, ever, use USPS. You think our Skynet/PosLaju is horrible? USPS is horrendous.

When I was at my wife's house in the US, the USPS people were not only late to deliver my stuff but they LEFT it on the front door of our house WITHOUT pressing the damn door bell despite being obvious there are people inside. What da fuq. Luckily at that time, the orders were just some cheap presents for Christmas. Imagine if it was something more expensive, mampus lah.

Uuuuugh, if there is one thing I hate more than discomfort is annoyingly sharp or sparkly treble. Hmmm, let see how the HE560 does then. But otherwise guess the Hifiman idea is tossed into the trash.
Er dude that's normal practice in the US. Or so I'm led to believe. Doesn't matter UPS, USPS or FedEx. All will leave stuff at your front door or under the carpet. Hahaha.

I've used USPS three times before to ship my WC stuff. So far all good. Even evaded tax twice HAHAHAH. Speaking of which, how much will headphones get taxed if shipped from the US?
*
Yeah, the treble is one thing that I didn't like about the HE-400/500. Eventhough they are very capable in EQing, taming the treble helps and all but like I said the weight is just crazy. Perhaps I have a weak neck but oh man, I've never heard of anyone not feeling that neck sore at least for the first 2 weeks.

Not normal practice, it's not supposed to be like that. When I ordered my X1 and K702 Annies with FedEX, they actually called my wife's phone before they arrived. Also rang the door bell.

Wow you're lucky with USPS. My parents ordered some herbal products and even that took like ages to arrive.
Luckily they refunded.

Usually the tax should be around 10%, the last time I brought in a headphone from Amazon was the DT770 Pro. I was taxed 10% eventhough I was expecting 15% (import 5% and sales tax 10%). Don't know why they taxed me that much only but whatever, the cheaper the better right? biggrin.gif
