Ouch.. US$19.99 is broad daylight robbery.. in the comfort of our living room!

String, my D-link 323 2Tb have been periodically restarting on its own, its driving me nuts! When you setup your WD sharespace, Can it hot swap?

D-Link 323 force me to format them before i can use it which is a pain in the ass. I have about 900-950 Gb filled,i cant transfer manually unless i have a spare 1Tb drive and even then, its gonna take forever sad.gif
*
Same here. I had to format and RAID them up, that takes 47 hours. I dont think the Sharespace is hotswappable, just easy toswap due to its construction.

Touchwood, mine works fine so far. Coming up to 75% full, and still works as good as Day 1.

Iwould suggest, as painful as it is, to transfer your data out to a spare drive and reformat it back again. Losing that data out because of its inconvinience can be more painful.

Just bought the NEW Time Capsule, with the "dual-band" feature, and guest network. No more downgrading the "N" network to "B/G" compatible when the iPhone(s) logs in into the network. Also great for the guests coming over for TV Show nights, so that I can assign them a secure guest network channel, that is separate from the band allocated for wireless transfer of media to the three Apple TVs at home. rclxms.gif

It means that my Apple TV can run at full N speed, without being downgraded to G whenever an iPhone logs into the network. Joy! rclxm9.gif

Yup, RX it's for sale now, but a colleague already "sambar" the TC when I broke the news on my new purchase. However, since it's all just verbal.......brows.gif

What is "not even a concept"? VOD? VOD is a term that has been tossed around for quite a while already, just that the method of delivery is dependant on the entity that sets it up. The most common one is the hotel environment via their TV remote.

If interested, we deal in PM. But if the interest is superficial only, it goes to my colleague by this Friday. The Time Capsule already packed back nicely into its box.

I saw the WD ShareSpace at DigitalMall for under RM2K with 2TB of HD. Still contemplating to get it or not. So many things to upgrade la, thinking of replacing my old netgear router to a faster one preferably a Belkin N+.

Bro string ... have u seen the DroboPro? Now that thing reignites my interest for Drobo. smile.gif

im using belkin N too there's significant different in the bandwidth....
i tried B throughput/G and lastly N....manage to get 20Mbps smile.gif (best effort)

The new Time Capsule enhance in "Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi." and "Guest networking." only is that so..

what about "Easy wireless networking up to 50 users?" does this also apply in the new Time Capsule?

Yup, Gizmodo broke the news just now. 8 bay for 16TB total! shocking.gif The barebones alone is USD1,600. Belum masuk itu HDD. I think I'll stick with my Sharespace. I can just upgrade to 4 x 2TB later in the future. I have already crossed 50% total capacity usage already on mine though. sweat.gif

Looking through Mactracker, the "Easy wireless networking up to 50 users?" fueature is carried over as well.

I've just changed my Dlink DSL-520T router to Netgear DG835G modem router. Reason being, I am ready to try and utilise the "Back to My Mac" feature incorporated with MobileMe. Also, with the Netgear, it totally clears the "Moderate NAT" mess I had suffered with using together on PSN and Xbox Live, totally opening the NAT. I dont know what is the problem with the 520T, but even with port forwarding, my NAT refuses to open. (NAT aaaa, not nuts, dont get any funny ideas! laugh.gif) Now all problem solved! rclxm9.gif

Hi Stringfellow,

Finally decided to get the WD-SS in the next month or two biggrin.gif. Saw a 4TB model at the Curve for RM3388! I think Computerwar in SS2 quoted me RM2800 before.

Anyway, i have some questions to ask to prepare myself for the data transition. (i have been searching the WD knowledge base and its hell)

Basically it'll be running as a NAS and itunes server for an iMac, Macbook & a Windows XP HP laptop connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station. iMac connected via network cable, the laptops wireless. I plan to purchase an Apple TV at a later date. The windows laptop will use the sharespace mainly for data backup only.

1) Do you need to reformat the sharespace using OSX disk utility before running the raid 5 setup? if so which format is best? Mac OSX journalled? i understand FAT32 not compatiable for files larger than 4GB
2) How do i transfer my itunes library over while keeping all my custom data (ratings, play count, play list etc?). normally with an external HDD i think i just need to go to itunes and "consolidate library" then point itunes to the new drive? The knowledge base highlights some instructions using the itunes media server software.

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...li=&p_topview=1

3) Apple TV will need the host computer to have itunes running to conduct a sync right? similar to iphone sync?
4) Would like to share my itunes library with my macbook but its not important if i cannot do it.
5) If the WD-SS fails (ie the WD-SS hardware NOT the WD HDD's), how can i recover my data? If its a failure and the WD-SS can be repaired then ok, am thinking if its a major failure and i need to replace the entire WD-SS, can i just transfer all 4 HDD's over? My impression is that every news startup the WD-SS will reformat and Re-RAID the drives deleting all the data.
6) what is MioNET?

Many thanks.

regards
sin yc

Phew, lotsa questions! I'll try my best to answer them.

1.I just did what the manual says under the things you have to do first while in Mac OS X. IIANM, I went straight into the NAS management screen via Safari/Bonjour and RAIDed it straight away. Once done(49 hours on RAID5!), you'll have to mount it under SMB protocol using the "smb://wdsharespace" command while in Finder. It's all in the manual.

2.I had my iTunes library externally on the WD MyBook Studio Edition I had, and all I had to do is assign the library to a new location, and iTunes does the rest. Everything is intact after the transfer, but the time-to-transfer was painful. Make sure you run this transfer wired!

3. Yup, the Apple TV merely acts as an extender for your iTunes, so it has to be drawing its source from somewhere. Unfortunately, a Mac has to be on for this.

4. Depending on how you decide to leave your iTunes Library file in, you can actually do this. I left mine on the Sharespace. What I did to let my Air load up the same library is to Option-click iTunes, a window will come up asking to either create or choose an existing iTunes Library, pick the iTunes library file on the Sharespace and load it up. The advantage of this is, the iTunes library is INDEPENDENT of any Mac, and it resides in a location which is reachable by any Mac, be it the present Mac, or any newly introduced Macs in the network.

5. This link should help you. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30586/75/1/2/ It describes the event of single HDD failure and the correct way to go about recovering from it.

6. MioNET is the Windows-exclusive program for Sharespace that allows the data on the Sharespace to be accessible outside of the local network. Another computer with MioNET software installed can "talk" to the Sharespace and allow remote access to its storage content.

Bravia Z here. Pioneer Kuro 9th Gen. in SoCal. The selection is mainly because of our needs actually, I game+movie+mac mini monitor on the Z, my better half there for her TV shows needs. She doesn't game much, plus we have an iMac in the den for her use anyway.

Funny how Gizmodo decides to do an article on RAID HDD arrays and have this as the chosen image:-

user posted image

Either someone at Giz has read about my setup, or a Giz reader has forwarded my setup thread to them, or it could *gasp* pure coincidence. Either way, the Gizmodo article is a good read on the many different RAID setups you can do on your HDD arrays.

P/s: Or it just shows that the WD Sharespace is a nice, and reliable NAS to use for RAID arrays and examples like these. tongue.gif

I'll have to make a new one. The White Macbook replaced with Mac Mini, Nintendo DSL changed to DSi, and some of the wired devices are now connected wirelessly, since the new Time Capsule is now transmitting both "N" and "G" without any bandwidth downgrades, thanks to its simultaneous dual-band feature. Also need to add in a spot for "guest network" allocated devices when friends comes around.

Later lah, lazy want to do now. tongue.gif
