HI Stringfellow

i am waiting for an excuse (and enough $$$) to set up such a system. One question, how do you add age restrictions to ripped movies or home videos? i want different apple tv's to have access to different playlists or files. especially content that are not suitable for kids.

Was thinking of Drobo instead of the WD SHarespace. I read somewhere you had concerns about the Drobo throughput?

hi stringfellow

there is an online reseller in singapore selling the Western Digital 4TB sharespace for SGD 1630 ~ RM 4000. Your system is about RM2800. such a crappy big difference..

Have looked around in malaysia and came to the conclusion that the small independent retailers here will not stock such items. wonder if bigger outlets like IT hypermart or harvey normans will stock it. It seems to me Malaysians have not gotten round the concept of a proper backup/sharing system. (keeping data on a single external usb hdd is not a backup in my book). I see a lot of Maxtor mybooks around.

ideally when i get my NAS (at the moment its down to WD sharespace or drobo), i'd like to sync my data with a second NAS offsite or with an internet storage service (but after calculating the monthly charge for 1TB of data - rclxub.gif ). I am not sure how to veryfy the data with such a sync considering our internet service is so sporadic and crappy.

maybe i just have to bring the second unit home to sync wired.

another questions, what do you use your Mybook 2Tb & Time capsule 1Tb for considering the WD Sharespace 4TB should cover everything?

do you know of an option to stream your data over the air to your iphone while you are away from home? so far i only know of slingbox (iphone app coming in march) which can stream astro even (live EPL during dinner obligations! biggrin.gif)

Hi Stringfellow,

Finally decided to get the WD-SS in the next month or two biggrin.gif. Saw a 4TB model at the Curve for RM3388! I think Computerwar in SS2 quoted me RM2800 before.

Anyway, i have some questions to ask to prepare myself for the data transition. (i have been searching the WD knowledge base and its hell)

Basically it'll be running as a NAS and itunes server for an iMac, Macbook & a Windows XP HP laptop connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station. iMac connected via network cable, the laptops wireless. I plan to purchase an Apple TV at a later date. The windows laptop will use the sharespace mainly for data backup only.

1) Do you need to reformat the sharespace using OSX disk utility before running the raid 5 setup? if so which format is best? Mac OSX journalled? i understand FAT32 not compatiable for files larger than 4GB
2) How do i transfer my itunes library over while keeping all my custom data (ratings, play count, play list etc?). normally with an external HDD i think i just need to go to itunes and "consolidate library" then point itunes to the new drive? The knowledge base highlights some instructions using the itunes media server software.

3) Apple TV will need the host computer to have itunes running to conduct a sync right? similar to iphone sync?
4) Would like to share my itunes library with my macbook but its not important if i cannot do it.
5) If the WD-SS fails (ie the WD-SS hardware NOT the WD HDD's), how can i recover my data? If its a failure and the WD-SS can be repaired then ok, am thinking if its a major failure and i need to replace the entire WD-SS, can i just transfer all 4 HDD's over? My impression is that every news startup the WD-SS will reformat and Re-RAID the drives deleting all the data.
6) what is MioNET?

Many thanks.

5. This link should help you. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30586/75/1/2/ It describes the event of single HDD failure and the correct way to go about recovering from it.

many thanks for your reply. actually for Q5, was concerned what happens if the RAID controller or the WD-SS fails but all 4HDD's are intact. how do you recover your data.

i guess it will be similar to how are you going to migrate from your 4x1TB system to your 4x2TB system? i do not think you can just swap your drives one-by-one. this is the disadvantage of the WD-SS compared to Drobo biggrin.gif

btw, your setup was referenced to at the Apple Discussion Forums biggrin.gif
