Just repaired my Time Capsule, and it's now streaming content to the Apple TVs AND doing incremental backups WITHOUT hiccuping up the streamed contents. Have an extra Time Capsule from the previous RMAed unit Apple gave me back for free (brand new btw), so that's probably either going to a purchaser or WDSed to expand wireless coverage to the bottom floor of the house.

The system's getting finicky, but with resetting the TC and setting it up again, it's back up and running. Three SSIDs, The "N" for streaming content to the Apple TVs, "B/G" to legacy devices and iPhones, and "Guest Network" when guests come over.

bro string!

thx to giving comment on my post last few days and immediately i got and grap a set of 500gb TC which is offering by switch for only rm699.

tide of budget... :-)

loving it now.

I'm glad you took comments from all side and decide. All the other comments I've read on your previous post all only post anecdotal instead of actual experiences. Your TC is the old version, or the simultaneous dual band version? The non-simultaneous version only either transmit at N or compatible N/G/B mode. If you're connecting using the older B/G devices , it'll bring down the throughput to that repsective level. If that does not bother you, and/or if you just want wireless coverage and/or access to the HDD wirelessly, then it shouldn't matter.

Not much I do with that model number. Either way, as long as you find the performance satisfacoty, it shouldn't matter. Your current usage of iPhone + MBP would probably bring down the wireless network throughput to Wifi "G" since you're using the iPhone, unless you have the simultaneous dual-band model.

Apple is holding a Special Event on September 1st. It's about time they're refreshing the Apple TV, but I'm not too excited about the rumor of them down-speccing the Apple TV to "720p- only". My Apple TVs are getting long in the tooth already, but they've been faithful and worthwhile in providing ample entertainment throughout the household. biggrin.gif

@ stringfellow:  i dunno man, 720p seems to make sense, considering our very slow lines, for most parts of this country, but having video in 1080p also makes sense, but only when you set up the theater system (or television) properly. This detailed post makes perfect sense of this.

I'm speaking of the rumored spec, not our line capability bro. I want that option of being able to do 1080p, even though the current iTunes HD offerings are only 720p in nature. Reason being, I get my content not from the net all the time, and these contents are 1080p in nature. For example, my newly acquired Panasonic HDC-HS700 camcorder records exclusively in 1080-flavours be it the 1080i or 1080p. Down-speccing the rumored new Apple TV to 720p only means I have to downsample the vacation footages to 720p, thus making my acquisition of that 1080p camcorder kinda redundant.

Mmm, point taken.. What if the videos (or iTunes media) themselves are scaled down to 720p,
and the soon-to-be Apple TV (or iTV?) has the capability of 1080p?
Would that sound like what Steve would do, in your opinion?
*
Steve likes to cover all the necessary bases, but I'm not sure my inclination towards 1080p is shared by him as well. He likes talking about the 326ppi of the Retina Display being "comfortably over" the 300ppi limit of human retinas, but some of his preferences on other devices are according to what he perceives as "what he thinks the general public wants" and not what "actually" the public wants. Case in point? Blu-ray. If he's the man of "options", he's be allowing Blu-ray as CTO long time ago into the MBP lineup.

In any case, it depends on what the rumored new AppleTV/iTV spec is gonna be. If it is a down-specs but with other perks like the ability to install apps from AppStore, I'm gonna see if the benefit outweigh the downgrade in specs. If the pricetag sticks at USD99, it shouldn't be much of a decision, I'd probably get one, but only one. If they maintain the 1080p capability, then all three of my current AppleTVs will get replaced.biggrin.gif

If the quality of the Hulu Plus streams are of any indication of the quality of Netflix stream on VPN, it's gonna be terrible. For locally stored content in NAS, or storage devices streamed via iTunes locally, that would be acceptable. Been doing that since my Wireless VOD system came online 2 years ago.

Bro string, I thought Hulu Plus got HD? is it because of the internet connection?

I think for itunes rental AppleTV will download the movie first and que when it's ready to play.

The upcoming features, stream from ipad/iphone, is also neat.

But on 2nd thought, in Malaysia there are a lot of cheap media player that can do most of what AppleTV can.
*
Download the movie first? Download to where? Last I checked, they've dropped storage altogether.

AS for Netflix and Hulu Plus, it's streaming only. "Download to local cache and then play" is probably only supported for content rented via iTunes only, which is why devices like the Roku/Roku HD are as small as the new Apple TV, they forgo storage for streaming altogether. Just like the iPad's Hulu Plus or ABC Player streaming, none of those clips are actually residing on the storage space of the iPad.

With that in mind, and with the current crappiness of the line here, why even bother thinking of the AppleTV?

I chose Apple TV because of the interface and because I've invested much on the content purchase based on formats playable on the Apple TV. Newbies or not, my dilligent metadata tagging of my content (approaching 2.1TB) has it looking like it's comparable to expensive VOD systems from Kaleidescape without coughing up the expense.

Watch by rating? Check! Watch by director/actor/genre? Check! Filter by those criterias? Check! Beautiful interface, you betcha!

For those who download to watch only, without bothering on making it look nice as part of their extensive media collection and its presentation, then by all means, go ahead with your run-of-the-mill multitude of other media players available out there. I personally cant stand my videos presented by titles shown as part of their torrent file name such as "Rubicon.S01E06.Look.to.the.Ant.HDTV.XviD-FQM.[VTV].avi", with TV show cover and metadata missing. I've striving for professional-looking delivery system here, watchable on the HDTV with sound system, not some two bit chapalang monitor with 2.1 cap ayam speakers.

If there are any other media players with comparable UI and ease of use experience(in terms of navigation, content delivery, etc) as the Apple TV, please show them to me.

String.. New Mac Mini with Plex.. quite nice wor brows.gif (didn't quite like the Mac Mini's built-in app, Front Row) but!!! of course you got the hassle of renaming files and downloading high res cover  unsure.gif

Anyway... back to topic.. I'm kinda disappointed that the new Apple TV still lacks HD audio! Also, I'm quite surprised to read this...
HD movies but not all have DD5.1 sound!? blink.gif

Hope to get some info from you guys who have a proper AVR system where your HDMI input would be from the Apple TV and HDMI out to TV for video feed, if the handshake is ok or not
*
It was a decision, which at the time I made it, did not include Plex. At the time my post about the VOD system building, Plex was either in its infancy or wasnt mature enough to serve as a viable user interface for my media collection. Two criterias went through my mind at that time, enjoyable user interface and future-proofing by means of regular updates. Plex may had covered the former criteria but at that time, future-proofing was a question mark.

The handshaking works fine with my setup. The Apple TV had stayed constantly on HDMI 2 on my TV and audio is fed via optical/Toslink to the AVR.

I'd still get the WD Sharespace if the question is asked to me now, 2 years later. In fact I'm thinking of another WD ShareSpace purchase before this year end. I may be relegating the old Mac Mini to the living room, and getting the new Mac Mini for the brunt of the work. Old Mac Mini + old WD ShareSpace 4TB for the the current setup, and new Mac Mini + new WD Sharespace 8TB (if i can find it) for the future Blu-ray rips. then I can really store my BD collections away for good. I need to do this pronto before my BD collection gets bigger. sweat.gif

Looks correct. That price discrepancy may work in your favor.

I'll press my own panic button when the the available space left crosses the 300GB mark.

@Ah_Wah

Looks like you've self-diagnosed your own problems. tongue.gif Truthfully, I know very little on wireless printing, I have no printers at home. sweat.gif

@aftersix

You need to do video conversion into formats recognizable by the iTunes. Anything iTunes recognizes, the Apple TV plays.

forget it
it's just not our thing
no movie and tv series rental from malaysia
even those it does, i bet you wont

unless you crack it for something, RMB internal memory is just 8GB

Reading comprehension fail! He is not talking about rentals, he's talking abut movies downloaded from torrents. There are other uses of AppleTV than just movies and tv series rentals. I rip my own movies into my iTunes library and stream it via the AppleTVs at home, and that involves no movie or TV show rentals from within iTunes. shakehead.gif

I would suggest before you comment on something, to read up on the matters you're commenting on to avoid making yourself look silly.

Updating my Apple TV to 4.1 now, 52 minutes to finish. Cant wait to try out AirPlay and VoiceOver on the new Apple TV, streaming content from iPad as well!

Updated and features explored, to me, the biggest addition is multitasking on the iPad paired with AirPlay on iPad.

This is how I plan to use my iPad in conjunction with the AppleTV with AirPlay feature in. Multitasking allows all medias to be projected to the big screen, while freeing you to do other tasks on the iPad while the movie/audio is playing or photo slideshows are being displayed on the AppleTV. Good times ahead, will be trying this while in Istanbul later! rclxm9.gif
