I think the advantage of machines is the 0% payment plan. There are friendly staff in machines, you just have to go to the right shop -- I find the friendlier staff then to be in the higher-end malls -- e.g. the gardens;

Will be buying my mac soon. waiting for who has the best offer in January. Hopefully that 4 GB ram still holds.

Well, the new promotions are out. 4 GB of ram if you purchase applecare with your macbook http://www.machines.com.my/Jan_Promo_09.php

Added on January 7, 2009, 5:54 pmman, Macbook 2.4 ghz + apple care -- very expensive. I don't know if that is worth it for the extra 2 gig of ram, does it make much of a difference?

The thing is -- do I really need the 4 GB of ram, is it that useful? I'm only going to be the occasional heavy user, e.g. swapping to vista sometimes to play some games. And isn't mac city giving it out for free anyway without having to buy the apple protection plan? I have a first gen macbook and I didn't buy APP --its still working fine!

Mac City has better service.

Machines has better deals (0 % interest is great)-- so I guess go for the one that appeals to you the most.

Added on January 9, 2009, 10:46 pmbtw, i think i'm going to wait off on my macbook purchase.

The new ilife isn't bundled wit the current macbooks right now. And you still have to buy apple protection care for the extra ram.

Too expensive -- especially in todays economic climate.

Ah, good to see that this thread is still going biggrin.gif

I'm planning to buy a macbook pro when I get back to KL near the end of september.

Its Machines vs MacCity -- lets see what the showdown comes too, and how many freebees one can get!

Added on August 17, 2009, 10:39 pmN.B. I never got to buy my mb pro last november (when I first started this thread), lets hope I follow through this time!

Thats true. But how about if you just want to buy the laptop. No extras.

Which one gives the best deal + free stuff?

It seems the freebies at epi might be better. on second though, the sleeve given by maccity could be very useful.

you can buy ACPP over the net at a cheaper rate. it really doesn't matter where you buy it because it covers global warranty.

as for ram, its pretty cheap now as well? its just a waste to throw away the 2 gb sticks though if you later want to upgrade to 4 (dual 2gb).

Does anyone know if the 4GB ram offered by these apple resellers are DDR3 type ram? I've heard the video card shares the ram, so its performance will be better if it is DDR3 and not DDR2.

For that reason alone, it might be better to buy ram and install it by yourself -- but I am not too sure how much the performance differs between the two types.

geesh... you think you can mix DDR2 with DDR3 RAMs...? Just what kind of question is that...? As long as your Mac supports DDR3, then resellers will install DDR3 for you. Both DDR2 and DDR3 differs in the number of pins, you cannot simply install one on the another, else there goes your logic board.

Right now there's only one Mac that uses DDR2, the White MacBook.

Added on August 31, 2009, 7:44 pmI take that back. You might be right about the incompatibility between the two chips, but in regards to the pins:

"DDR3 DIMMs have 240 pins, the same number as DDR2, and are the same size, but are electrically incompatible and have a different key notch location.[6] DDR3 SO-DIMMs have 204 pins."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM

lol.

I'm wondering if I should just order online and save the 300 RM with edu pricing. The problem is I'm only going to be back in KL for 9 days, so I might not even get the computer by the time I leave.

1 free sleeve? Whats the price of the macbook 13" pro?

In maccity its more expensive at 4600,

machines its 4500 RM.

hmm, if you had to choose between a MBP 13" or a 32" tv, which one would you choose?

The point is, i have a macbook already (black 2.0 ghz with 2 gb ram) and its still working fine. Should I hold on for another year before upgrading? What will apple improve in a year in their MBP lines? I can only see a slightly higher CPU spec, default ram of 4 gb, bigger HD, and perhaps a better video card.

Then theres that apple tablet thats suppose to come out sometime over the holidays.

How about if I spend that money on a 32" HDTV? The problem is, the only use I'll have for a TV is if I hook up my PS3 to it; I download all my other shows.

Some hard choices to make here...

get the tv and hook it up to ur ps3 and enjoy full hd.

hmm, well my housemate was planning to buy a TV early next year (I'll supply the PS3); so thats how I rationalized spending money on the mac smile.gif lol..but you are right, perhaps it would be better spent on a TV where there be even more distractions at home! lol.
