Thanks! That helped quite a bit. If I may ask.. from your POV, what will you recommend me to get for my sis? 1000D or 450D?
seems like you had a budget of 3.4k , you should seriously consider the canon semi pro 40D kit instead of those entry level cam such as 450d, 1000d and yada yada.
personal opinion,
1. 1000d look like a flimsy child toy, are you gonna pay over 2k for a plastic toy look a like cam? but anyway it still produce good picture..
2. 450d look pretty much more refined then 1000d with rubberized grip, slightly better AF and a much more flexible 9 point AF for composition.
As a 450D user here, I would advice you to get a Canon 40D kit. Don't waste your time and money on entry level stuff. Btw , Canon 500D and Nikon D90 looks good too if your budget allow it

1st question answered so might as well clear your thoughts.
Let's take a lens name for example:
Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 IS USM L
Canon: Brand
EF: Lens mount. Canon has two, EF and EF-S. EF-S can only be used with APS-C sensors (xxD xxxD and xxxxD series).
70-200mm: Zoom range. Dunno how they measure this. 70-200 is around medium telephoto range.
F/2.8: Maximum aperture for this lens. In this case the maximum aperture is same throughout the focal range, but in other lenses this may not be the case. For example, F/3.5-5.6 means that the lens maximum is 3.5 at the widest focal length and 5.6 at the furthest.
IS: Image Stabilizer
USM: Ultrasonic Meter, helps your lens focus much faster than conventional motors.
L: 'Luxury' class lens.
If you're seriously into video, opt for another alternative like the Canon Ixus 110 IS, Samsung is a hopeless brand in terms of PnS and camcorder, they don't even do marketing, so what do you expect?
I'd recommend you seriously consider HD video-capable PnS cameras, they'll do much better.
it's ultra sonic motor.
