Wow, that long meh??? I defrag using windows defrag my 320gb + 640gb n at most it would take around 30 mins if badly clustered..
Most of the time 10~15min max.. Usually the 1st time defrag would take quite sometime but not as long as 11~12 hour ah..

how much free hard disk d u have? if it's less than 10%, it's no wonder

Windows Vista constantly defrags your hdd whenever there's no activity in your windows

That's not sound right...Defrag must run when you have at least 15% free space of HDD..you can try removing some old games or software

Try using JkDefrag. I personally think that the windows defragger sucks. You don't necessarily need 15% of free space to defrag.

yes, u don't.

u can even defrag with just 1% free hard disk space, but it will take ages, especially if you have large chunks of files

the more space it has, the faster the initial defragment process will be

plus, it'd help if you stop torrenting when you defrag

Try using Auslogic Disk Defrag.
Works fast and efficient for me.

I use Diskeeper 2008 Professional (not freeware) on the system with 3x500GB and 1x640GB drives, and it works like a charm. Defrag is set to be automatic, so it processes the drives in the background, when the system is idle. No need to worry about defrag times smile.gif

Yep, Vista will auto defrag when your computer idle. But for my case, if I am not using the computer, I will shut it down, or do light torrent. So, Vista virtually has no chance to defrag my hard disk.

I test JK Defrag, Auslogic, Perfect Disk, Diskeeper and Ultimate Defrag. My laptop (using vistax64 where I want VSS to turn ON), I use Diskeeper 2008. However, my gaming rig, I settle with Ultimate Defrag because it allow me to determine which folder I want to locate it at the outer ring (speedier).

So, I set my game folder to be defrag and located at outer ring, while archive file such as mp3, wallpaper etc at inner side.

Since I have 2 hdd, my gaming files is set at second hdd outer ring of second hdd and my windows file is set at outer ring of my first hdd. Work wonder for me...faster boot, and faster gaming (loading) time.

Your mileage may vary.

Added on November 28, 2008, 12:57 amOh, forgot to mention...not all defragger could handle VSS pretty well. AFAIK, PerfectDisk 2008 and Diskeeper 2008 got VSS special defragmentation algorithm. Due to Ultimate Defrag doesn't has this feature, I turn off VSS (system restore) on my C drive.

I think this problem is because you've never defragmented your drive before. It happened to my 320GB HDD, but it took me 6 hours cause I've never formatted it before. Now, this is what I normally do, after I reformat I'll defragment and set Windows Defragmenter to defragment automatically.
