I've just bought a 16gb 3g iphone from lowyat plaza. The salesman said that its officially unlocked from singtell. Went home, checked the model number, it's MB496T (Italy?) instead of the ZA/A used for Singaporean iPhones. Is my iPhone officially unlocked or have I been conned?

Anyways, I tried syncing it to my itunes, but this message popped up:
An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again.

As many times as I tried reconnecting it, the same message popped up.

Help, anyone?

Yeah.....you have been cheated by the seller itself. Most probably , you are getting a locked set.

Bro, Sorry.. I think u've been conned.. Singapore set should be come with ZA/A model number..

How much get yours? Try go back to the shop and ask for refund.. If not report it to Consumer Tribunal..

Got it for 3.2k. together with loads of apps that they put in. So the message is typical for locked sets?

OMG! They selling Locked Unit for freaking RM3.2k?
-If your Unit is Official unlock, just plug it in iTunes and it will unlock by itself.. no need to do nething.

Well, they SAID that it was an officially unlocked unit from Singapore. Since most units I see here are priced around 3k, I thought it was quite a deal since they didn't charge the usual 2% extra credit card charge.

@beavis: I've already inserted my maxis card. I can use it normally, made calls, sent SMSes.

negative. italy belongs to the officially unlocked group.

if maxis sim card can be use..then this unit is already unlocked lor........did u stick any sim unlocker to your sim card?



to check whether it is officially unlock.....u can try restrore your iphone......then in itune it will inform u whether your iphone is officially unlocked or locked...

that method is slightly outdated and old fashioned. look out for my thread to understand further.

@beavis68: They put my simcard in themselves, but i took out my sim, and there are no attachments to it.

@jaybee: The usual price I see here is around 3k-3.1k. The salesman said that he'll install 5 pages worth of apps for an extra 100. The phone alone is actually 3.1k. I thought it was okay.

Anyways, I'm going to go back to the shop to ask the salesman.

1. you are probably (unless they are free apps, which i dare to bet that they are not!) using pirated/cracked apps then and they are not welcomed here. hence do not discuss about them.

2. rm100 for 5 pages of cracked apps? a pirate trying to rip even further for an extra mile? oh come on!!!

3. which is why perhaps (another speculation by me) your iphone is not recognisable by itunes.

Most probably you are getting an UNLOCKED unit but definitely NOT Singapore unit. You really need to check the Full Model Number at the back of the box (left bottom)

That is just part of the tactic for salesmen to close their sales only... aren't they ?
Having 5 pages of Apps worth RM100 ? most probably they are using cracked/pirated Apps/Games downloaded from Internet as quoted by Nokia2003.
It is more worth it if you buy ORI, hassle and update free at all.

I got myself 2 ori programs (Beejive n Wordbook) already cost me like RM80... 5 pages of programs dunno how much need to pay liao

cheated ..... should sruvey 1st at LOWYAT .net , not Lowyat....

try it on another computer, u're using windows? might be USB driver problem..

and the part where u said it comes with lots of application, I'm assuming this is a second hand unit, u will need to clear the whole iPhone via iTunes, if u were to install the application u need.

5 pages all free apps is possible?

Unless he gets those "free apps" on his computer that he is going to sync it in with, those apps will be gone once he plug it in, and turn on iTunes, since those apps were synced with a different computer, and a new computer sync will wipe out the apps entirely when synced as a new iPhone.

I'm sorry, but you have been conned big time. Apps on iPhones are not like Windows Mobile where you can keep when syncing with different computers. Lesson learned the hard way, eh?

Geee.RM3200 spent for an iPhone. But at least the good news is it's an official unlock unit. All you need to do now is connect to your PC and click on the restore button (who cares those pirated apps they installed!) and the phone should be spanking new from there.

Ain't it typically Malaysian. You can buy a 3K plus phone but cannot pay for software...

How much does RM80 get you these days anyway? Were not Beejive and Wordbook worth the investment.

On a related note, NZD has gone BELOW 2.0, 1.97 now! NZ Aifontrijis are going for less than RM2200 after conversion. Damn it, if I had waited I could have saved RM600! A friend is going there tonight, and he's happy doing his Aifontriji shopping now, problem is Vodafone is noticing the weak NZD and being an ******* about selling outright phones. You should look into Quick Pwning the bugger. Also dont upgrade to the latested 2.2 firm or update your itunes cus the latest patch is out.

Do some research it took me a day of doing nothing at work to work out how to crack my 16GB 3G Iphone. Also took me a while to figure out how to put all these free apps in.
