I had purchased Dell Studio Hybrid with Mobile IntelĀ® GM965 Express Chipset. I connected it to a Philips LCD TV with a native resolution of 1360x768. However this resolution was not available in Vista Display Properties. Selecting a higher resolution will either causing overscan (border of the window desktop not visible) or underscan (window desktop surrounded by black border).

I have been searching for a solution online including Dell for almost 2 weeks and the only solution that I come across is a registry hack which is to create a custom display driver. GM965 Express Chipset is unlike ATI or nVidia chipset which allow you to select custom resolutions. I hate to mess with the registry so I kept looking for other solutions, and just now, finally I found a solution.

I noted that the monitor driver is Generic PnP Monitor. There's no monitor driver provided by Philips, and I believe very few LCD TV manufacturers have a monitor driver.

All I need to do is just to have the PC select another monitor rather than the Generic PnP Monitor.

1. Go to "Display settings" and hit the "Advanced settings" button
2. Chose the "Monitor" tab and hit the "Properties" button
3. Go to the "Driver" tab and chose "update driver"
4. Chose "Browse my computer for...." and the chose "Let me pick from a list..."
5. UnCheck "Show compatible hardware" and find "standard monitor types"
6. Chose one "digital flat panel" that best fits your monitor
7. I picked Digital Flat Panel 1360x768 (60Hz) from the list
8. Go back to your display properties and choose 1280x720. I can only choose 720 because higher resolution will make my LCD TV to upscale to 1080i and cause the whole screen surrounded by thick black borders. 1280x720 created overscan meaning the edge of my desktop is not visible. But suddenly I found that additional adjustment option just appeared.
9. A new option would appear under refresh rate: Display Expansion
10. Click the Aspect Ratio Options
11. Select 50 on both Horizontal and Vertical.

Now I can see that the font is larger and the whole desktop fit nicely to my LCD TV. I know that some how I'm not displaying at its native resolution, but a resolution at 1280x720 is so much better than 1600x900. Btw, 1360x768 is still not available for selection. But I guess I can live with that for the time being.
