I know it sounds peculiar. but i love studying self help material. books are great for the resources. i am thinking what if game company can really make this happen which more interact and more educational purpose. sorry, no offend to those action, rpg or sport games. i do like to play one or two blood shooting genre. i just thinking self help games...possible? Can imagine how lively and inspiration it would be.

after all, game developer will be very hesitate to do it with the issue of gamers still prefer action-pack genre. If violence is the source of the likeliness....then what can self-help games to input in its foundation. (fun? or also can be violence as suggested?)

(Hardcore) Games are made for pure entertainment. What you're probably referring to is 'Edutainment', but even with edutainment titles like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (Geography), I don't think there are much(or at all) self-help games because people want to be entertained, not be bored out of their brains trying to learn the principles of life.

Can "Cooking Mama" considered a self-help game? Chicken Soup for the Gamers Soul? |

QUOTE(neoardi @ Nov 21 2008, 10:59 AM) I'd still call it entertainment, edutainment also can.. You do learn a bit of some things here and there..But self-help is and never was part of entertainment IMO. It's for people to read, and make them a better person.. I doubt playing Dead Space, or World at War would make any difference in a person.. Maybe peeing in pants and perhaps running out to gun people lar, but self-help it is not. Short quote from wiki: QUOTE Self-help or self-improvement refers to self-guided improvement[1]—economically, intellectually, or emotionally—most frequently with a substantial psychological or spiritual basis. With that quote said above, it refers to self-guided improvement, meaning that, reading/playing the game alone does not immediately improves ones self. The person requires to digest the meaning and understand of what's given. Games are storyline driven to give the OOMPH in games. Sure they may call all FPS's generic, hence stories and plots are added in to make a difference. Difference is, whether the plot/story is meant to teach you something or not, which is not the developers/publishers intent. Good self-help books are like "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", "Rich Dad Poor Dad", "Greatest Salesman of All", the Chicken Soup series.. But games? I think we all have failed to find one that influences our lives. I mean REALLY influence. Self-help are made to change your lives PERMANENTLY with proper understanding. |

Then GTA can be classified as "self-destruct" games?
Added on November 21, 2008, 11:19 amActually, 3DO was planned to be a self help console, but it went terribly wrong. So does Bandai's Playdia, which ended up a major flop. Self help and gaming can't seem to co-exist as history tells. This post has been edited by gundamalpha: Nov 21 2008, 11:19 AM |

very well said bro.
put it in this way. i see what others dont see. doesnt mean i'm smart or not intelligent. i foresee the potential inside be it edutainment or self-help (which i strongly will not change my stand) games or series will make an impact towards how the game should be diversified. I know genre are specifed as action, rpg, sports and etc. now i can see no reason why self-help (sihumchai intrepret it without a flaw) cant be a genre. It takes edison for thousands of mistakes to get 1 answer right. It takes Col. Kentucky 1001 no before a yes. Go deep...use some inspriration and deduct the logical sense. I'm not saying when 9 against 1, then definitely the 1 is crazy or paranoid. but give the 1 a chance. What others cant see dont mean you kennot see yourself. anyway...i wonder what happen to your cat inside frog mask. i love it to be truth. |

They say self help is more like giving a real spirit within you, a mental outburst. So i'd say so far, no games has done anything like that.
That is except if you count that RPGs teaches values that really make u learn about what life is. |

So i'd say so far, no games has done anything like that. u getting a step closer on how i foresee things. well, i might be oversee or over analyze abeit. RPG is totally no self-help. But can someone recalled "The Romance of 3 kingdoms" which was made popular in pc arena? In fact, i love it while playing my 286 machine with 20mb hard disk....that was good old time. That is except if you count that RPGs teaches values that really make u learn about what life is. now...the strategist cao cao, tsun kok leong or tsun zu or whatever (sorry if i say it wrong) can be applicable from their well tactics while approaching enemy. Same applicable to office politics nowadays....make zero different. Many tricks or theory still applicable. If TRO3k able to attract so many people in studying its history (already inculcate in syllabus), then the develper can start making this kind of games.....focusing on self-help again. dont totally rely on the west, you wouldnt noe the east....china will be the one who explore the game i mean and forseen here. hope to see and come out 1 in market. i sure it will be a genre. |
