The Journey of Blu-ray:-

December 18, 2008 | by Greg Robinson

Some years come and go with little fanfare and few events worthy of mention. 2008 was not one of those years. Amidst the backdrop of a controversial war, two eager candidates fought tooth and nail for our attention and support. Using all manners of persuasion, from television ads to celebrity endorsements, each camp urged us to look past color, to look beyond red and blue, and demand the changes they promised which we so rightfully deserved. In the end, only one candidate would remain standing - and its name was Blu-ray.

Join me now as we take a look back at 2008, a landmark year in which Blu-ray Disc defeated HD DVD and in turn became the Next Big Thing, the President Elect and DVD’s heir apparent as the undisputed King of Home Entertainment…

Warner Bros. Goes Blu

01/04/08: With its vast and deep catalog containing films and franchises such as “Casablanca,” “The Matrix,” “Batman” and “Lord of the Rings,” Warner Bros. was an important linchpin prolonging the survival of HD DVD. To the great surprise of the HD DVD Promotions Group, on the eve of the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, Warner Bros. announced it would end its dual-format support and become a Blu-ray exclusive studio before summer. For HD DVD, the proverbial Fat Lady was finally singing - and she was singing the Blu’es.

HD DVD Cancels CES Press Conference

01/07/08: The Las Vegas Convention Center, home to the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, was poised to become the venue for the final round in the battle of HD DVD versus Blu-ray. HD DVD banners featuring Warner’s “Batman Begins” and Paramount’s “Transformers” hung prominently as far as the eye could see. However, in the wake of Warner’s surprise announcement to become a Blu-ray exclusive studio, the HD DVD Promotions Group was left no choice but to cancel their press event and re-evaluate HD DVD’s suddenly-bleak future. Meanwhile, at the Blu-ray Disc Association’s elaborate and bustling booth, the mood was anything but blue.

Toshiba Throws in the Towel

2/18/08: After Warner’s decision to jump ship, the writing was officially on the wall for HD DVD. On Feb 18, Toshiba President and Chief executive Atsutoshi Nishida formally ended the format’s long and costly campaign: “We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop.” Hallelujah.

Universal Announces Support for Blu-ray

02/19/08:Less than one day after Toshiba euthanized HD DVD, Universal Studios - the format’s staunchest, unwavering supporter - announced it would begin to release titles on Blu-ray Disc later in 2008. Serving as fitting bookends to their high definition story, Universal will release Joss Whedon’s marvelous sci-fi adventure “Serenity” on December 30. “Serenity” was Universal’s first HD DVD offering when it hit shelves in April of 2006.

Fox's Hitman is First to Offer Digital Copy

03/11/08: Although the film itself was hardly worthy of much attention, Fox Home Entertainment became a trendsetter when they bestowed their “Hitman” release with a “Digital Copy” of the film on Disc Two. Now commonplace on new releases, Digital Copy has become synonymous with a standard definition version of the film that is only playable on Windows Media Player and iTunes-based devices. This includes a typical home computer and the ever-popular iPod.

Sony Adds BD LIVE Support to PS3

03/24/08: Until recently, Sony’s Playstation 3 was the only game in town if you wanted an upgradeable and dare-I-say future-proof Blu-ray Disc player. That’s because the PS3 was the first Blu-ray device to offer Internet connectivity via an integrated Ethernet port. Sony has continuously delivered firmware updates to make the PS3 compliant with the latest and greatest Blu-ray technologies. The March update made the PS3 the first player on the block capable of using BD LIVE, Blu-ray’s avenue for delivering dynamic, web-based content to supplement the bonus material already on disc.

First BD LIVE-enabled Titles Arrive

04/08/08: With their releases of “Walk Hard” and “The Sixth Day,” Sony became the first studio in town to offer BD LIVE-enabled Blu-ray Disc media. Additional featurettes, theatrical trailers and downloadable ring tones were suddenly there for the taking for consumers patient enough to suffer longer disc loads and interminable download times. Still in its relative infancy, BD LIVE continues to face hurdles in the speed department, but the technology shows increased potential with each new BD LIVE release.

500,000 Copies of Iron Man Fly Off Shelves

09/30/08: Jon Favreu’s Marvel-ously entertaining “Iron Man” became Blu-ray’s first bona fide hero. Selling 500,000 copies in its first week of release, naysayers who called Blu-ray a doomed niche format suddenly had some crow to eat and admit that Blu-ray is here to stay. This was helped by the fact that Paramount Home Entertainment put together a fantastic 2-disc package for “Iron Man,” sporting exceptional 1080p video and a grin-inducing Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

LG Ships Netflix-Streaming BD300 Player

10/10/08: For those who felt that Blu-ray Disc and DVD compatibility simply weren’t enough, LG became the first company to offer a standalone player with video streaming capabilities. Thanks to its integrated Ethernet port and a strategic partnership with video rental giant Netflix, LG’s BD300 allows consumers to choose between watching a disc in the tray or one of the 12,000 film and television titles Netflix now offers for instant viewing. Samsung recently followed suit, and now offers the same service on their BDP-2550 player.

Black Friday Brings Players Under $200

11/21/08: Using DVD as a historical precedent, it has long been posited that before Blu-ray can reach critical mass, the players would need to become affordable. Although the term “affordable” means different things to different people, the $199 price point has long been viewed as the tipping point. As expected, Black Friday was a big day for bargain hunters, with several retailers - both local and online - selling players from the likes of Sony, Samsung and Panasonic for under $200. Although prices have continued to fluctuate, there are still some great deals out there if you know where to look.

Blockbuster OnDemand Announced for Blu-ray

11/28/08: Not to be outdone by rival renter Netflix, Blockbuster announced that it would bring its competing streaming service (dubbed “Blockbuster OnDemand") to Blu-ray players in the first quarter of 2009. Similar in concept to its Netflix counterpart, Blockbuster OnDemand will presumably come pre-loaded on select Blu-ray players (like Netflix did with LG’s BD300) or eligible players may simply require a downloadable software update (again, like Netflix did with Samsung’s BDP-2550). And you thought the days of choosing red or blue were behind us…

Dark Knight Debuts After 1M Copies Ship to Stores

12/09/08: Christopher Nolan’s brilliant follow-up to Batman Begins was more than just the biggest hit of the summer; “The Dark Knight” is also gunning to overtake “Titanic” as the biggest domestic box office earner of all time. Warner will give it one last hurrah - and simultaneously remind Oscar voters about Heath Ledger’s chilling turn as The Joker - when “The Dark Knight” returns to theaters on January 23. In the meantime, fans can enjoy Warner’s spectacular Blu-ray edition, which features a screen-filling 1.78:1 aspect ratio for the film’s numerous IMAX-filmed sequences. (The aspect ratio returns to 2.40:1 on everything in between.) In anticipation of brisk Batman Blu-ray business, Warner Bros. reportedly shipped more than one million copies to retailers - the latest record for the burgeoning high definition format. Early reports indicate that 600,00 copies were sold in its first day on store shelves. Niche format, huh?

Finally finished TDK last night tongue.gif

and finally notice the aspect ratio changes...sweat.gif
frankly, if you do concentrate in the movie....the changes won't irritate you becos' they change the ration on the next scene......

don't know why....I felt the normal DD sound mix is better than the TrueHD with lower LFE and better sorround....sweat.gif tongue.gif

the PQ is.....6 stars quality......the IMAX scene are a tag better than the normal 2.4:1 scene like 5% more details.....
