Hey All

Recently I bought a netbook - Fujitsu U1010 (Got it for RM 1999 over at LYP). Its a decent netbook , which doubles as a tablet PC. But the thing is that it comes with Windows Vista Home Premium and Vista itself is a very very demanding OS. Those guys did offer a downgrade to Windows XP Tablet PC edition for an extra RM 250 (me being a cheapo said no and I said that Vista can handle those tasks fine). Today , after trying it in real world senarios , it seems that Vista can't take it. The disc is constantly being used as swap as there is only 1GB RAM and 64MB-256MB of the RAM is being used by Intel onboard graphics. So my question is , is it worth it for me to downgrade to XP Tablet PC.

Now I've an issue here , there is no way one could find Tablet PC edition softwares in the market. But what I am asking is that is it legal to use a Windows XP Professional License (I've an OEM License here from my old lappie , which I could call M$ to deactivate it and reactive on the new PC) for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. From what I heard , Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is just Windows XP Professional + Tablet PC Stuff. As for the CD , I guess I've to use other means to accquire it. I just want to clarify on the licensing matter and not the CD. Of course if its not legal , Guess I am forced to pay RM 250 for Windows XP Tablet PC

Oh yeah below are the specs for my UMPC

Intel A110 800Mhz (Its based on Pentium-M)
1GB DDR2 RAM
40GB HDD
5.6 "WSVGA (seriously its small)
Windows Vista

Thanks

Cannot upgrade the netbook to 2Gb RAM?

I think you can set the Intel onboard graphics to the minimum, 64Mb.

If according to the Microsoft EULA, OEM software cannot be [transfer] to another PC one.

I believe this netbook uses microDIMM instead of soDIMM , its very hard to find microDIMM RAMs here in Malaysia. Hence , its impossible to upgrade to 2GB. If I can upgrade in this PC , I would just stick with Vista

Its dynamic , the OS automatically allocates anywhere from 64MB (minimum) up to 256MB (maximum)

I just check one of my PC hardware supplier price list, and I found this item <KVR667D2U5/1G>, it is a Kingston 1Gb microDIMM RAM, price is RM199. . .

I think maybe you can call the local kingston office to check out where you can get this RAM at the shop that is near you location.

Taken from Vista's EULA:

QUOTE
14. DOWNGRADE.  Instead of using the software, you may use one of the following earlier versions:
· Microsoft Windows XP Professional,
· Microsoft Windows Professional x64 Edition, or
· Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.
This agreement applies to your use of the earlier versions.  If the earlier version includes different components, any terms for those components in the agreement that comes with the earlier version apply to your use of them.  Neither the manufacturer or installer, nor Microsoft is obligated to supply earlier versions to you.  You must obtain the earlier version separately.  At any time, you may replace an earlier version with this version of the software.
So legally, yes you can downgrade to either XP Pro or XP Tablet PC. However, the EULA didn't mention how should you obtain the CD keys for prior versions. I guess you'll have to call MS for the keys.

a lot of reading says vista need 2GB to run properly. But there are people who run with 1GB no problem. Best is maybe you try readyboost. Get a fast USB thumbdrive. This should be able to reduce the HDD thrashing.

BTW, why does downgrading need to pay? A lot of notebook company give choices of xp OR vista.

Im guessing this is because its a Tablet PC where the Vista architechture may vary a little bit to allow for the touchscreen to function and this could be the reason. Personally I feel, the best option for Prasys is to warrant for hunting around for the RAM and keep to the current Vista setup.

Readyboost is of course an option, but to have something sticking out from the side of your Tablet PC kinda takes away the aesthetics of getting a TabletPC in the first place perhaps smile.gif

1gb is actually enough for Vista. Make sure it's SP1 though. I've run it smoothly on 1gb laptops before. Consider turning off aero?

Hey Prasys, long time no chat. The answer to your question of whether it's permitted/legal to transfer a used OEM license is NO. Even though you manage to transfer the license to your Tablet PC, you won't be able to activate it.

prasys, you just using it for personal use right? not for company use? If for personal, you can use vLite to slim down Vista and remove unnecessary services from the installation thus making your tablet PC snappier even using Vista...

Agree with you. Use vLite for Vista slimming/modifying or use nLite for XP slimming/modifying.
PS: Only for personal use.
