Remote control, depends on the usage of the user
as such, if u ar those Keynoters.. then a remote will help u most
or entertainment wise, to control ur entertainment stuff from distance

the remote control cost u Rm69 if not mistaken..
*
agreed. however for presentations, if u have an ipodtouch or iphone, the Keynote app (99cents) is better since u can view ur notes and next slide (pretty useful for me).

as for entertainment, try to decide if you like to use frontrow (or perhaps plex) or not for watching videos/movies. if just for music, the Remote app (free, also if u have an iphone / ipodtouch) would be better.

if you really like the idea of controlling a tv-connected mac from a couch, maybe u should consider a wireless mini keyboard/touchpad combination like the one from logitech (forgot the model...i remember got one forumer here paired it with a mac mini)

can files made with iWorks be shared with windows?
*
yes, but obviously you need to save ur work in Office formats (.doc, .ppt n the likes).

however, from my own experience, SOMETIMES it doesnt translate well when u open it in a windows PC. particularly for powerpoint. this is also true if u use Office 2008 for Mac. sometimes the formatting lari and all, and equations would appear 'blurred'. this can be fixed by doubleclicking the equations but then its a hassle doing that when i have lots of them.

that's why i do my work on Office 2007 in parallels. n i <3 ribbon hehe. if u dont want to do this, when sharing ur work (as in not allowing editing), share in PDF form. that way u can make sure things will look the same on a windows PC

Im wondering anyone uses matlab using macbook ? ... how about cs3? I think we need parallel desktop or boot camp for this right to install window . if so, is it advisable to use pirated window ? lol >.<

Added on September 5, 2009, 1:39 ami tried to checkout using edu discount ... they didnot ask any student id or information to prove that you are student .
*
actually both MATLAB and Adobe CS3 got Mac versions, so you don't need to install Windows at all.

no discussions on pirated stuff here please

@dvlzplayground,
I won't be surprised if you're still waiting; you should have been given a DHL shipping number via email - in which u just need to click on that link and it'll automatically redirect you to the tracking page.
*
mine is posted using singapore...something2 (4got the name haha)

anyway i managed to talk to them n they said my delivery does not have a tracking number (does this makes sense to u guys?). anyway they'll try to send another copy to me, but it'll ship on monday n i should get it before 25th. well2 juz have to wait~

Getting a Mac Mini (Late 2009) RM2199 via online store.

Worth taking up the iWork for additional RM169?
Keyboard and Mouse: get from apple or go for 3rd party?

Planning to hook this up to a 32" LCD TV.
*
i'd go for the apple keyboard, i think it's very nice smile.gif definitely third party mouse for me, maybe white logitech v470 to match the keyboard

have u used iWork before? can always use trial version 1st: http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

if this is going to be ur 1st mac, probably better skip the 169 iWork 1st. then u play with the trial, n buy when u decide u like it. 199, only rm30 more expensive. better rugi rm30 than paying rm169 for something u wont use later hehe

OR get the iWork, use it, n sell off when u decide u dont like it

that being said, i really love Keynote, n other iWork apps are wonderful. but i have to stick with MS Office for compatibility reasons~

Not bad. Looks huge though.
Not sure if its suitable for my HTPC setup.
Yea.. don't tink i'll get the iWork since this mac is mainly for HTPC use.

Apple keyboard = RM229 from Apple Online Store. Hmm.. A lil' pricey, dont u tink?

Looks like i'll be getting just the Mac Mini without other Accessories from Apple Store.

Price of keyboard and mouse from Apple no discount for Education Store! sad.gif
Also, anyone knows where i can get the Mini-Displayport- or Mini-DVI-to- HDMI cable? I know Monoprice.com have 'em, but prefer to buy them locally if possible. My location : Penang.

Thanks all !
*
oh if for HTPC then no need iWork smile.gif

good keyboards are always pricey...those from Logitech or Razer are pricey as well. for HTPC use, have a look at logitech dinovo mini smile.gif

those adapters quoted by beavis68 is great, but pricey for me. i have the monoprice adapter for video, n just use normal RCA cables for sound. not the tidiest solution, but works fine. i still havent seen any shops selling miniDP-to-HDMI converter though, i guess u can just order from monoprice

@dvlzplayground,
Yes it can be done.  No, it's not auto-enroll.  Basically they just send you the MobileMe box with the code.

So.. who's gonna allow me to tumpang MobileMe along with their purchase?! *puhlleeaassseeee*
*
oh i see. cuz at the 'Select' page down there it stated 'auto-enroll' so i thought they'll register the Mac for applecare straightaway ;p

Yea, me thinks its auto enroll.

Wouldn't mind helping u to get it since im not taking up the ACPP. Jus bare Mac Mini.

Also, i tink monoprice MiniDP to HDMI will do since im hooking the audio to my S330 via 3.5mm cable. Not using the LCD TV speakers. No need for additional audio conn.

Dinovo mini is crazyly priced! sweat.gif think the Apple wireless keyboard + cordless mouse combo works for me.. smile.gif

Last ques: why MiniDP to HDMI and NOT MiniDVI to HDMI?

Added on January 15, 2010, 11:39 amOMG.. Shipping charges from Monoprice.com is so expensive! USD31 for a USD9 item..!!

damn...
*
oh if u're hooking to another speaker then juz use normal connection lah smile.gif hehe i recommended the dinovo mini bcuz u said u want HTPC hehe more suitable what

good question. i forgot the mac mini got miniDVI. if u can find a miniDVI-to-HDMI connector locally, that would be great. if still have to order online, better get miniDP since more devices will support it. also u can get miniDVI-to-DVI then DVI-to-HDMI. not sure how much, but can buy locally lah

yeap the shipping charge is already expensive tongue.gif i bought it because i have no idea what to do with my tv after i canceled Astro haha. imagine if u got the more expensive adapter haha

QUOTE(tinkerbel @ Jan 15 2010, 12:31 PM)
@dvlzplayground,
ACPP is auto-enrol but what I want is MobileMe smile.gif [oopS.. my mistake; just re-read the first post I made]

@dantwt,
So U gonna get the MobileMe or not?! Can PM me if U can help me make the tumpang?! ThankSs!! *muacks*
*
ohhh i didnt realize u mentioned mobileme in the 2nd post. sorry! tongue.gif

Just to share, US Apple Online Store is selling contract free iPhone 3GS 32GB (not sure it is unlock or not) at http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=718LL/A&mco=Nzc1MjMwNg

Its kinda hard to find the link. But I guess Malaysia Online Store definitely not selling it smile.gif At least not for now.
*
u can just buy the 'hotlink plan' from maxis. no contract also. then juz pop it ur celcom/digi/umobile whatever simcard. obviously maxis wont tell u to do that, but it's possible. if i remember right there's something in the malaysian law that no one can sell carrier-locked phones
