Hi, Im planning to get WD MP, to pair it with 1TB or 1.5TB ext HDD - anyone can suggest a good 1TB/1.5TB HDD (preferably those like MyBoook or Maxtor Basic i.i. no need to buy extra casing/etc..

Why dont u use optical cable connect to your receiver
And HDMI just for picture

WOuldnt that be much better?

Can we use this - i.e Optical cable to carry the audio signal (DTS/DD) to our reiciever and decoded by the reciever??

I have try out the WDTV units for 2 weeks now.   In fact I have sold many units of it now and still have a couple sitting in my house waiting for delivery.  Now I am not a dealer or anything like that, but I just help my friends purchase it and setup for them.

All I can say is that the WDTV rocks!  It can play HD mkv files up to 1080P.  When you say the quality can't compare to the Bluray, I fully agee with you, but I can tell you that the quality of mkv files can be damn good that you can't really tell much difference between bluray and mkv.  With 1TB WD HDD that comes with 1000 movies/concert...i can tell you that this guys is going for quantity and not quality.  I have a few WD 1TB Essential HD and I can only put around 200 HD movies in it.  And those mkv movies that I have is only slightly inferior to bluray and i really don't mind at all.

I have a few 1080P mkv movies that is more than 10GB in size and I can tell you that the quality is absolutely great.

So the bottom line is that the WDTV can display FULL HD video with clear, sharp and details video if you have the right HD contents for it.

The WDTV does carry audio on the HDMI.  For those who would like 5.1 or 6.1 surround, you need an optical cable.  The WDTV can decode AC3(dolby Digital) but has no on board DTS decoder(common guys...this things only cost RM399) so you need a receiver with DTS decoder if you want to enjoy DTS sound.

The WDTV can also support multiple audio channels and subtitiles which can be turn on & off.

Besides that the WDTV can even play your favorites music and supports FLAC lossless audio for the audiophiles.

For the price and features...I think this is the best media player money can buy.

Just to check with u guys
when u play the mkv files using WDTV and use AVR to decode audios (DD/DTS)
do u find the conversation voice coming out thru centre speaker tends to be soft?
I found out most of my mkv files have these problem

at first i thought it's my speaker's setting
but I tried on dvd's and blu-ray discs don't have this problem
centre speaker sound is on par with other speakers

or is it the nature of mkv files with weak and soft centre channel audio? rclxub.gif

me having this prob too - wdtv fw1.01 and yammy rxv2400

bro, cannot use amp centre channel adjustment to compensate volume?
*
sure can, but dont like to change the adjustment so much. Later need to calibrate the whole thing again - and again if switch to other media...
Btw, why so many diff files size for 1080p mkv - some are 4/6/8 gb?? ( i downloaded T'former 10gb, but the sound crap - via dts)

Any chance we can check the main language is english - coz some are in diff language..??

Never i'd encountered this situation. I normally playback in my AV room with aircond running at 25c-26c. I placed the unit above my Onkyo TX-SR606 but with colling fan running continuously. I had used it for 2-4 hours consequtively without any problem.
Do check your HDMI cable & resolution signal settings. Have u removed the protective plastic sheet on the WDTV?
*
plastic removed, lounge no aircond (but my sliding door to balcony wide open)
I tried the auto res and also 1080p 60hz res - same problem..
both occurs on 720p and 1080p files - but some are ok

could it be due to the bottleneck of USB - i'm using maxto basic 1tb..??

Darn it!! starting to hate this product vmad.gif vmad.gif The same this (as above happend again). Was playing Changeling 1080p and after roughly 1 hour of viewing time the aboved prolem occurs. Tried everithing - reset, unplug, start the mov and FF, set auto res/720p60hz/1080p60hz, change usb port/cable. It just get worse - all the way to the end - it happened every 2-3 min.

I think it is the WDTV issue - as from my observation my avr lost the digital sound iinput from wdtv and my ext M.Basic hd stopped blinking. can this be another flaw in the new firmware. didnt got the chance to tried in the old/shipped f/ware - straight away update - how i wish to hav a copy of the old firmware....

Any one has experienced this before - WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?? mad.gif vmad.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

thank you guys.
I tried playing several 720p and 1080p mkv but some same prob - most of the time after +/- 1hr of run time. Never had the green pixelation prob though. If i just let the slo-mo continue, eventually the player just hang!!

Anybody experience this with the 2nd f.ware??

please help! Can some kind soul please point me to where I can solve the "no audio" problem on 720p and 1080p files?
I tried downloading Popcorn Audio Converter but there's a trojan horse in there according to my AVG.
I don't have a DTS receiver either! (How much are recivers now?)
Anyway, I just want to watch my stuff on my LCD TV in my room, so the speakers from my TV is more than sufficient for my current needs.

Please please help!

best is to download a DD files then..or
have u tried to set audio to stereo??

You might want to try witha different HDD.  It might also be due to slow HDD?
*
i suspected that as well. But most ext 3.5' now are 7200rpm and 32mb buffer - what barnd u using and does anyone else experinced it (slow HDD)

there is a list of compatible HDD post in the FAQ of wdtv - but S*** la, they said can play any HDD with usb ( even thubmdrive!!). Felt cheated if this is true... vmad.gif

Added on March 15, 2009, 6:42 pmOk aces, I have a burning question.

I have an old Pioneer HiTB thingy (about 7 yrs old) that comes with 5 speakers and a one-box player and receiver. Will this work with WDTV?

How do I then connect all three together?

WDTV/ TV; HDMI
WDTV/receiver: ?
receiver/TV: ?

Pardon my ignorance again ya?
*
dude, in the cd/manual it clearly showed the pic/diagram on how to connect ur wdtv to ur home system setup.

For example: ( i presumed ur Pioneer HiTB dont have a HDMI input)

- if ur tv has HDMI - use this as to conn wdtv to tv (as pic source)
and used either optical conn to ur Pioneer HiTB optical input. (as sound source)

- if ur pioneer HiTB dont have the optical input, use the white/red to connect wdtv to the stereo/source input on the pioneer.
(remember to set the audio in wdtv as stereo..)

hope this help..

Just watch back-to-back Quantum Of Solace and Transporter 3. Both are 1080p and dts 5.1. No promlem like my previous posting. Played it with my old 2.5 ext hdd 20gb.
so i guess, my previous problem might be due to the files that i played - corrupted?? Or the latest f/ware hasn't fully rectified the issue between >500gb hdd with WDTV??

Any thought??
What pissed me now is both the files (changeling 1080p and HPotter1 720p), i spend at least 2 day downloading them... vmad.gif vmad.gif
