I don't think so with official firmware, but there is an alternative. Please go to here for more info -> http://b-rad.cc/wdtv-firmware-dvd-enabled

Thank you! The hacked firmware works. I now am playing my Transformers 720p off the Samsung external DVD-RW drive. Flawlessly I might say. smile.gif

Does this mean i can plug my external dvd rom into my wdtv and play the dvd without any problem (even with DTS)
Q1. Does it upscale my DVD (480p) to 1080p?

Q2. What if i plug in with a external Bluray ROM?
*
Not sure if you can play DVD proper. I think no since WDTV did not license CSS. It's mainly for files you already burn off to DVD-R/RW.

About the external Blu-Ray ROM, i don't see why not. Try it let us know. Not many of us owns an external BD drive smile.gif

QUOTE(nordingh @ Apr 13 2009, 03:09 PM)
That good results but can revert back to original firmware or not later.

*
Yes can revert back to original firmware.

It's still a beta version firmware. I shall wait for the final release.
*
Yes it's still beta but they have added alot of features and fixes compared to the previous 'final' release 1.0.1. Western Digital is making the player better and better with each firmware, beta or not.

They are actually listening to users feedback, especially at the AVS Forum.

QUOTE(Maniac @ Apr 15 2009, 11:56 AM)
I was wondering, if the source is in "DTS-Master or Dolby TrueHD" for eg, like in BD discs, will it be able to somehow down-sample/process/convert to regular 5.1 AC3 or DTS thru TOSLINK to older AVR that only does AC3 and DTS but not those new gen HD audio.

I am asking this as I do not have an AVR that decode DTS-Master or Dolby TrueHD, only does AC3 and DTS:ES to 6.1. And I considering to buy a ps3 for BD movies.  Do not mind no DTS-Master or Dolby TrueHD, but I should at least get AC3/DTS right?
Or all BD movies has regular AC3/DTS alongside with DTS-Master or Dolby TrueHD?
and yeah, my WD TV coming later today... biggrin.gif
*
You should be fine. The Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA have their core Dolby Digital and DTS in their encoding. You can always tell the PS3 to output the core to your AVR.

I have stand alone BD player but an old AVR, the Yamaha RX-V540 that does DD EX and DTS-ES. Whenever I play BD with TrueHD or DTS-MA, I get DD and DTS on my amp. Connection via coaxial.

ehm, guess what, I found a few weird MKV that just wont play on my WDTV.

one of them is, Ghost in the shell 2.0 720P, with 6.1FLACs.
old firmware , the audio shown unknown stream, expected.

after flashed to the 04 beta f/w, became totally unplayable. weird.

another MKV is my an old 1080p Top Gear special episode with AC3 stereo.
playable with major skips plus no sound at all.

Basically I re-watched Olympic 08 opening 720p just now, basically just giving all sort of WOW factor to me, now my HDTV does look like a HDTV.

Now I need to find more HD files. biggrin.gif
*
Try powering off (not power off by remote. unplug the power cable behind the WDTV!) the WDTV for few minutes after a firmware update. I get that weird unable to play file errors after flashing any firmware, even normal xvid avis!

But after powering down and letting WDTV reboot, the 'unable to play' files suddenly can play. Weird, I know.

ExarKun, u using the DVDmod?  How was it anyway?

Does it somemore play normal authored DVD in easy way? or need to browse for VOB?
*
Normal authored DVD I didnt try because I doubt you can due to CSS licensing issue.

But other than that with the DVDMod, I can play all my data burned DVDs.

Viewnet at lowyat plaza still have a lots. Price 369 but didn't mention about hdd stand at the box fine print. My own box have that. I just went there this evening.

Added on April 23, 2009, 10:50 pmFinish upgrade to 07 without any flaw this time. Resolution back to auto. My hard disk still spinning after turn off by remote but I think slower than before. Is that spinning down claim by WD?
*
Yeah the spinning down is claim by WD. Many in AVS Forums reported their drives spinning down when they power off the WDTV. But there are cases the drives does now spin down.

AVS Forum WDTV 1.02.07 thread with users reporting drives spinning down.

Just read this at AVS Forum:

QUOTE
QUOTE
It appears that on my 1TB WD Elements is spinning down, but it still see power with either power off or Eject. The drive is no longer spinning from what I can tell(Cant be 100% sure though), but the light on the back is still on. I think it has to do with the drive, but I cant be 100% positive.

GuyWD:
This is normal. We're not turning off the USB bus power. Instead, we're just telling the drives to spin down. This is why some models of external drive don't spin down - they might not support the spindown command.

GuyWD is from Western Digital. He's interacting with AVS Forum users on the firmware issues.

Just got back from LY. It' still RM369 in Thundermatch, with free KFC voucher. And yes, there are easily 100s of 'em wink.gif I believe Viewnet should be more or less around that price. Can't recall. Been to too many stores.

Anyway I got the new version without stand, and with matte black remote. Just to clarify, besides the minor cosmetic difference, and the stand, are there any other differences between them? Functions & features wise? etc?

I think they changed to matte black cuz the shiny surface was a magnet for thumbprints. Other than that, it should be the same device.
*
I also just came back from browsing Thundermatch at 4th floor. The WDTV with the stand and glossy remote is at their DVD Drive shelf. The one they pile in the middle of the floor with the big RM369 sign is the one WITHOUT the stand. It's easy to identify by the box. If the box is glossy, it's the one WITHOUT the stand. If the box is slightly matte, it's the one WITH the stand. From what I saw they still easily have 10 boxes of the WDTV with the stand.

I have tested about 4 2.5" hdd from 40GB to 250GB, none of mine can spin down by WDTV. Even the WD brand itself.
*
U guys do know that spindown does not equal to shut down right? Most drives will still have their LED status ON even after the drive have spun down. The important thing is that the drive HAS spun down. LED status is irrelevant.

The WDTV even thou remotely switch off (not switch off the plug), when plug-in the hdd, you can see the read/write LED will blinking. Look like WDTV still read the hdd even in off mode. I test with a few hdd, same results.

Here what I do:
I put WDTV in off mode, then I plug my 250GB Hitachi drive, the LED blinking non stop. When I switch on the WD, I can see a message on TV saying I need xxxMB free space for media library. That mean, in off mode, WDTV still work, just the video and audio output is off.
*
Another possibility in your case is that WDTV is not done searching and cataloging your drive. From the error you mentioned that "WDTV requires at least xxxMB for Media Library", I'm guessing the drive is full. If that is the case then yes, WDTV will not spin down your drive until it's done going through the ENTIRE harddisk. And a 250GB FULL HDD will take time to catalog via the Media Library.

In your case, when you switch off via remote, WDTV goes standby but actually in the background it is still cataloging and searching the drive. So no, your drive was not spun down. Try inserting a relatively empty drive and let WDTV finish cataloging. Then when it's done, try switching off via remote. The LED should still be on but the drive should not be vibrating anymore when you feel it.

I normally unplug the power when finished using WDTV+HDD. Last nite, I was so tired, so I just shut down via remote. This morning when I woke up, I anxiously went to the HDD and put my hand on it to feel if it hot or not. To my surprise, it was not and I realized theres no blinking at the LED. I switched on the WDTV, and its working fine. Phew.
That means the WDTV spun down the drive when you shut down via the remote. Hence, the cool drive because the platters were not spinning.
