We wake up 2 to 3 in the morning expecting to watch our favorite team play and there's no weather affecting the Astro signal but then, Astro STILL manages to find a way to piss us off! Somehow along the line, my TV reads "This channel is not included in your subscription. To subscribe........"

What the hell have I been paying for then? I can understand that transmission would be interrupted in the event of bad weather but what's the excuse this time?! Bear in mind, this is not the first time this is occurring, when United played West Ham (and Spurs played Arsenal), we had the same crap and missed 20+ minutes of the matches shown. It's annoying as heck.

Is there a channel where we can voice our complains? Writing to papers, would they publish our rants? Consumer tribunal or something cause I didn't stay up at 4.51 AM to face this garbage.

I use to think like you... how frustrating it is in Malaysia right... now im in UK....

You need TV lisence to watch tv.... 132pounds plus a year... then the TV and that only gives you Champion league and not all too.. then you buy pay per view like SKY... and that also.... sat EPL match kick off at 3pm... they WON'T SHOW (Because they more people to go to the stadiums..) ...so for students like me how ?? if got luck then the pub will show.. and that also quite sometimes ady the satelite no signal... my friend and i are like grumbling like mad!

EPL matches in Malaysia ALL can watch... can even watch 2 games at once at mamak shop with 2 projector screens and can see almost all the games, worse come worse delay only...

Other than the stadium part... i think i'll still prefer to watch matches on tv back in Malaysia... mayb streaming is better but not much diff for me as i can't run p2p network at uni anyway... so no p2p streams for me...

Could it be something to do with coverage? I've never experienced such issues before.

I've become accustomed to the ritual of getting up in the wee hours of the morning to keep up with our European exploits. If you students think it's tough, try imagining what it's like for us working folk. It isn't a though we have the option of skipping class or falling asleep in it. No work = no job = no pay. Simple equation.

Contrary to what many believe, the term 'soccer' was actually coined by the English themselves.

When I first saw the thread's title, I initially thought this was another discussion on how bad Malaysia's football state is currently..

Then I realized it was referring to the quality of astro's transmission during the UCL match this morning..

Yeah, I watched it as well and noticed the same message.. I was initially concern if I didn't pay my astro bills.. hehehe...

Anyway, the technology used by astro is an old technology.. compared to what is being used currently in UK. It's so crappy, when it rains, you loose signal and broadcast... then you have this..

Dunno why la this country is so behind in terms of technology.. same case with our internet and broadband coverage as well...

Thats what happens in a monopoly. They get lazy and theres no effort at all to better their services. We need competition to shake them up.

Lol.
The same can t be said of golf lovers of football fanatics.
Kick one ball to one end and miss and kick it back.
90 mins of people playing without a goal.
At least in golf, you know they put the ball in the ground after 15 mins.
dont diss what you don't understand.

Rather than complainin in a forum, why dont you take the initiative to gather petition for Astro to dedicate another channel or show more european football.

at least it may make a difference

My take is that golf is much more enjoyable when you're playing, not that I play. It may seem surprising to some but I actually know a few people my age that like to play the game. I don't think it's a spectator sport however. To me it's a little more entertaining that watching a game of chess zzzzz...

Seriously though, I never knew ASTRO had so many problems. Like verx I only ever face interruptions when it rains and even then for no more than 15 mins.

If we cant get transmission when the weather is bad, fine its understandable that Astro are actually using Low Frequency to transmit signal from their Satellite..

But i had never face a problem like you before, seriously..
Well, if there was no customer service available, then just call them when the time is right... Then try to get the solution from there...

If it isn't too much, mind telling your location (to verx and Duke Red)? But were you guys awake watching United v West Ham/Arsenal v Tottenham or during yesterday's match day? AFAIK, it was last week and this week.

Me? Cheras, signal strength 67 +/-

I for one know for sure that Astro has the capabilities to broadcast in HDTV at this very moment.
Why aren't they doing it? You gotta go ask the big old G.
Although, to be honest, even if they DID have a seperate HDTV channel as per skysports, how many would actually subscribe to it? Only us urban folk i suppose.

Then perhaps it's a geographical issue. I live in PJ near Eastin Hotel. Didn't watch the games you mentioned but I was awake the night before watching the game against Atletico. Over the years of watching football I don't recall every experiencing the problems you've mentioned.

I live at Bkt Jalil. Was only awake for yesterday's match (cause Madrid were playing as well) but i didn't encounter any problem except when it started to rain abit but even then it was just a temporary disruption.

Living in Mont Kiara, signal strength range from between 63-68. Had problems last night and during the United-West Ham game as well. Figured it was my own decoder's problem so I kept updating it to no avail. Don't think it was due to the rain, it was only a slight drizzle. Besides, other channels were working fine

The surprising thing is that it was ASTRO themselves that told me that! My decoder's power unit was fried (that's what they told me anyway) and they asked if I wanted to repair the unit or get a new decoder. I said might as well get a new one given mine is so old. They then told me that if I had the old one, I should keep it because it's better than the new one. What's the point of having a new one then ah? hmm.gif

Maybe the hardware and the firmware inside is better?

But for example, they said the old bulky PS2 is better than the slim one. Maybe because the slimmer device, their life span is short? unsure.gif

I've heard that too. I have the old bulky PS2 and I must say, it does 'tahan lasak'! Still works perfectly fine with no servicing or repairs whatsoever.

Slimmer PS2 has heating issues. My fat one is still going strong after like what, seven years?

So the old saying of "bigger is better" still holds true? Sorry to go OT but it makes you wonder why they made handphones so small these days, you need a microscope to read messaged.

The newer decoder has actually been working better for me. The reception's better on the small decoder but it could be coincidence. My signal on the old decoder has always been in the mid sixties but now with the new one, it's in the seventies. And I could point at the decoder from further away with the newer decoder.

There are a bunch of them on sale in the Garage Sales section. Don't think many will want to part with their Playstations, even if it means it only being left to rust in a drawer. I've still got my PSX as well (believe it or not it's still working, tried playing the old Street Fighter Alpha 3 a week back) and I certainly won't be parting with any of my consoles. Sentimental value la brother. I spent a lot of my youth with it you know.

They are 3 generations of the ASTRO decoders.

The first one (older ASTRO decoders) were made by Philips.

Then ASTRO decoders were made by Nokia.

Both models above are alike, all black colour.

Latest one.. smaller decoder, grey black colour, is made by THOMPSON.

Reason on why older ones were better.. it's like that la in IT. Older computers were reliable and good, newer ones tend to be more cheaper in manufacturing and also they try to improve it's performance/specs and sacrifice the reliability aspect la.

Consumer tribunal or something cause I didn't stay up at 4.51 AM to face this garbage.

i'm not sure if anyone here replied to your post, but i'll try my best to answer yours.

Do you put your Astro on Standby mode? I have seen many people (friends, family, neighbours) after watching a program at Astro, they just off the TV and go off and leaving the Astro still on. I'm not a tech geek, but Astro needs to be at Standby mode so that the folks at Bukit Jahil can install the latest patch, if you will, into your Astro box, system, decoder whatever you want to call that thing.

Just like games these days, you can't join a particular server if you didn't install the latest patch first. Anyone has Steam? You have to let Steam download and update Game ABC before you even play it.

If you do put your Astro on Standby mode when you're not using it, check if you paid your Astro bills on time. Once their Customer Service folks told me that they might cancel off some of your channels if you don't pay the bill in full, or late payment.

Recently it happened the day Arsenal vs Spurs. I missed the first 25 minutes because of the blank screen. Try to contact Astro call centre but no one pick it up. Some say its because of the installation of updates thingy as mentioned previously by The whacker. But i dont know. Probably because there is no competition in term of who be able to deliver a live coverage of football match other than Astro?

The dont have competitors.

To Threadstarter (kobe8byrant):

You are a Man Utd fan yet you called this frustrating? Man Utd games are shown week in and out.

Think about football fans from other clubs (especially lower division, midtable premier league teams) who don't even have a chance to watch their team play. We have a Southampton fan in the forum yet i have never seen him whines.

How long have you been supporting Man Utd? Man Utd fans are already more fortunate than most of the other teams in the league, you should be thankful for that.
