True, studying overseas gives you more exposure and also more experience in the REAL WORLD, but it largely depends on what you're there for. Look at what you need to study first...

i would love for u to further define ur statement.

lets start with "IPTA are in the THES ranking while IPTS are nowhere to be found".
err... yes? not sure what u're implying here tongue.gif.

relating to my earlier statement, in my experience, i've taught students who strongly prefers to work alone/independently. i have no problems with that, as long as they deliver at the end of the project or semester. but if the same student complains that "lecturers are useless", memang makan gua punya kaki lor laugh.gif
if u look at the architectural association (AA) school in london, the students have an election to elect their head of school. u cant get any stronger than that wink.gif. i've seen first hand how they toppled a top european architect who was the head of school back in 2004 in favor of a new, more radical architect. if only malaysia could vote their own prime minister... biggrin.gif

Now now... You know how our political system works in Malaysia. laugh.gif

Yeah I agree with the 1st part of your comment. U.S have more exposure & you'll see things from different aspect. Everything is so modern & fast paced here. You just gotta get yourself into the right group & mix around. If you have bad influence & don't know how to control yourself, you'll end up in a junk. Don't forget what is your purpose studying abroad; to earn a quality education & expose yourself to situation that money can't buy.

On the other hand, one must not forget their roots, where they came from. No offense, but I'm kinda against those who are "trying to be American". Speaking U.S accent in M'sia, having hand gestures like no other & all sorts of crazy stuff. Yes, you're exposed. But why can't you just be yourself & speak like a normal person. Having quality education abroad doesn't make you a higher social status person. I believe everyone is equal.

laugh.gif But how can you not "speak" like them in the accents when you're actually stuck there for years to study??? I've got loadsa friends and relatives who were influenced by the foreign cultures, some so bad that they seem to be gwei-lous and no longer Malaysians alry...

We can't change our accent even we have been living in overseas for more than 10 years unless we move there when we are small, like before primary school. We have our own Malaysian accent, this can't change. The only way we can change is to speak "proper" English or follow their way of speaking (means use the expression they usually use) in our accent. They can understand as well as long as it is English, not Manglish. It is not necessary to pretend to have a certain accent.

I have to say, you are quite wrong on that point... I've got a friend who spoke broken english and always had that ahbeng accent. The minute he moved to UK to further his studies (A-Levels in UK), he changed. He came back only about 3 months after being there, and next thing I know, he was another chinese-turned-gweilou... laugh.gif

But it all still depends on the person, how much does he/she adapts to the environment; to blend in with that silly accent or not... wink.gif
