ermm.. it is not that monash is bad, but the experience is diff.. monash you are paying more because you have proper facilities and staff but you cant buy environment..

lets say i study 1+4 years at monash for my engineering program and compared to 2+2 years ADP... i think ADP would be around the same price, and best of all in the states you can afford to work part time when you study unlike here back in msia

if you study business then it might be a little wasted... because most business students can't secure OPT after graduation... but if that's not your motive then its fine

13k for 4 wow. Is that the amount you bringing home or it was the sum of the money you made in 4 months?
I have taken living expenses into equation and I can hardly come out with more than 2k a month.
Btw your employer doesn't tax you?
*
i left it in my us bank acc... i made total 12k wage + 3k tips.. after tax n expenses i made 13k usd ^^

ermm.. if u r studying the most u can make is 800usd.. but if u work like me 12 hours 6 days.. u will be able to make like 3k a month.. my friend works like crazy makes 4.5k.. sometimes we dont really work but just stay at the work place n get paid.. lol

we get tax.. from my 12k wage i got tax 1.1k.... so that means i take back 10.1k... but when i claim my tax back i claim 1.4k back.. lol.. what a joke.. please dont tell IRS, as i claim as a resident.. ahhahaa.. some ppl even worse claim their tax + 700usd.. lol.. instead of paying tax they pay u back with even more $$$

you will get full tax refund if you did not get the amount they set up. you claim it with social security not your status.

10k in 4 months is really good money. For instance a director who makes 5k a month will only take home 2.5-3k+ depends on the insurance and stuff. you work as waiter right?

this spring is weird, its mid april now and it is still chilly.
*
yea.. but if u claim in the in tax refund form as a resident.. you will get an extra 300usd on top of the full tax refund.. some states even more at 700... isnt that great thumbup.gif

ermm.. no really waiter.... barista XD

at my place there's no spring or autumn... it is winter or summer.. n the summer it colder than most places' winter.. lol

-when we're in USA studyin, roughly hw much cn i earn frm the part time job per month? hw much is the expenses per month? it wont affect my studies 1 rite?
*
max is 20 hours, depends on ur wage lor... lowest i think is 7usd/hour... highest so far is 45usd/hour... estimate u can earn around 800usd, which is enough to cover lodging n food... expenses around 1kusd... nope, shouldnt affect much

ic...thx 4 the info bro!  smile.gif

well, i checked a INTI college brochure, it states tat tuition fees + expenditure is approx. rm85k per yr (really? taylor's state its 100k-140k per yr shocking.gif )
so 2yrs is rm170k...my parents cn prepare me rm90k(hope so..)...hmm the remaining rm70k i hav to come out wif myself d...><
frm wat u said....i work part time thr to cover my expenses...so :

800USD(in come per month?) X 12(12 months) X 3.5(exchg rate into MYR) X 2(2yrs) = RM67200
then RM170k - RM67200 - RM90k = RM12800
when sem break cn work 40hrs/week rite..so i thk cn cover d?  hmm.gif

SeLrAhC, clarify me if i gt any flaw in my calculations plz..

the Work n Travel USA part, i dun thk cn make it as i checked Taylor's academic yr, the sem break max is 1 month oni whr they require at least 2 to 3 months of employment...
-oh yea, do the work n travel programme sponsore our USA flight tickets? if no then... shocking.gif
-hw did u hav a 4 month sem break 1?  hmm.gif
-if i doin foundation in engineering in nottingham(1 yr programme)...m i eligible for the programme? since they state at least 2 yrs...bt ill continue my degree for another 3yrs after my foundation...

sry SeLrAhC for my numbers of questions yea...bt since ure quite experienced in ths...plz clarify me on ths b4 u took off to USA again... notworthy.gif
*
i think 100 k/year is an realistic amount for fees + living.

i think you should be able to cover based on that calculation. during summer i think you can work full time outside not just 40h/w if u had at least 9months of classes. u will be given j-1 visa i think. if you dont have enough 9 months, you will be able to work full time, but in campus only.

yea.. adp dont have long breaks, but to differ 1 sem is all worth it. u differ one time during ur 1st year, and while waiting to enter US you can go for a 2nd time.
-no they dont sponsor, it is around 3-5k for a return ticket. but you should still be able to make lots of $$$.
-i am from monash, so we have long summer breaks.. lol
-yes, if you're malaysians. foreign students need to at least study 2 years in msia

just glad to help ^^ i had to take the hard path through life and i hope you young ones out there dont have to suffer like i do and miss out all the good things in life ^^

erm, if i go thr work 2 months, izzit worth the air ticket?
do the employer provide us accomodation n meals? or we hav to pay ourself, hw much roughly then?
m i too young(18yr o) to participate? ever seen a 18 student joined? my mum doesnt seem to blieve dis programme pulak(takut saya kena tipu)....zzz  doh.gif

im askin so much.... sweat.gif  doh.gif
*
ermm.. work for hmshost.. alot depends on luck also.. some places are for adventure/leisure.. some are for making $$$..

no lor, the best if of course 4 months if you wanna make $$$$, 2 months i dont think enough to break even

depends on the employer, some do some dont.. usually dont will pay more.. accomodation is not worth it, only meals... it depends on location..

18? u must at least be on college, yea.. 18 is the minimum age.. dont wry, it is not a scam.. once you are in nott, you will 100% get to know the program... every year there's at least 80-120 students from nott goes for this program.

QUOTE(dreamer101 @ Apr 19 2009, 04:34 AM)
SeLrAhC,

1) Great story!!!  Congratulation!!

2) Would you mind summarizing the strategy that you use to achieve your goal??

    Is it??

    A) Enroll in 2 + 2 ADP program or University of Nottingham or so on.

    http://www.speedwing.org/

    B) While in Malaysia, use the work and travel program to work in USA during summer.  Earn and save the money.

    C) Use the money to finance the university course in USA.  Work in USA part-time during semester and full-time during summer.

    D) Graduate with Bachelor degree -> go into Master

In my family situation, the later generation has an easier path.  My family is spread across 30+ countries in the world.  So, usually, there is someone that they can lived with.  So, room and board is closed to free.  So, as per USA, if the room and board is free and you go to community college, USD 10K per year is enough.  If the person work a bit, we just need to sponsor 5K per year excluding room and board.  So, it is not that much more than local IPTA.

But, we STILL have a bunch of failures.  Our nephews were TOO LAZY.  They just party and never show up for class.  Our nieces are doing fine.

Dreamer
*
1) thanks.. just trying to go through life...hope this can help u guys better ^^
2) yea.. but my story is a bit diff... i did monash, 1st time was during my 2nd year... 2nd time was after my 4th years.. now is the last time bfore my convo in sept...

the strategy u wrote is the best option, but at D) after graduation, do 3 years OPT (by working 3 years u should have gotten tonnes of $$$$), then do your masters and do another 3 years OPT... by then i think u will have at least 1/2 million ringgit, and should be able to return proud or u can opt to apply for greencard/h1b

lol.. when kids are spoiled, they end up like that... a lot of 2nd gen asian american kids are like that... they parents struggle to get a US greencard through legal/illegal means from before.. and allow their kids to be citizens, but their kids grew up to be like real american kids... see sometimes also wanna slap

Major in Commerce (parent's choice), going to Vancouver to study.
Yeah I picked Canada for the ease of getting a PR, safety (no guns), environment ( Vancouver is one of the best cities to live in, in the world according to surveys), also cheaper fees and other personal reasons.
And if I have the urge to go to US later, I'd just hop over the border (to go to grad school), US is just next door, I've relatives in US and my sis is going to study there next year, so no sweat.

Hmm well maybe you should look into Californian State Universities, there's another university system, in New York, City University of New York (CUNY) system, the fees are also reasonable, not sure about the reputation though but if you want to go to the Big Apple, their fees are rather reasonable.

I think you can check your college's study plans to see which credit can transfer.
*
cali uni system have 3 parts.... UCs , CSUs and CC.... UC is d most elite among d other... CSU is affordable... CC is to jump into UCs n CSUs easier

i think i might hop to canada too... easier to find life partner there

Yeap UC is more elite, more difficult to get in, you need year 12 I think (we Malaysians only have 11 years of education hence you'll need A Levels or STPM to get into the UCs)
CSU are easier to get in and cheaper too.
CCs, are Community Colleges, works the same as ADP/AUP

I see thanks, an international warranty would suffice, I thought I lost out buying my laptop here cause everyone is telling me that buying laptops in the states is cheaper.

Ooo its easier to find a life partner in Canada? How so?
*
errr... just take IB, it is highly recognized there... or u can just simply sit for SAT and score high...

if any1 plans to go us i would recommend UC... go for some not so famous ones and then transfer later...

no ler.. msia cheaper because they throw in stuff like mouse, bag, thumbdrive etc etc... us u only get d laptop n charger in a box

canada asians are more spread out... in US asians are only in certain places.. canada less racist XD

as for guns and weapons... i lived in the ghettos of LA inglewood.. pasadena & chinatown... no body dares touch me... lol...blacks are less friendly but that's they way it is... white r ok ok.. latins n asians r d friendliest...

in ancohrage now... every1 is friendly... guns is allowed... my neighbour gave me his rifle d other day... but took it back when i said i m going to walmart to buy ammo... lol
